when i was younger my dad would play marillion so much and I wouldn’t understand why he liked them so much, looking back i was only a kid but these guys are amazing now that i come back to their music. Especially fish, he’s truly a genius at wordplay. this song is my favorite, truly encapsulates how i feel right now due to some circumstances, i wish my dad was here so we could listen to this music together. But sadly he passed away in 2019, since then ive been listening to music he had shown me when i was younger , and i fell into marillion.

Don't care what people say but Fish is better a singer than Steve Hogarth!
The moment when Fish starts to sing 'Cause I know what I feel, know what I want I know what I am Daddy took a raincheck...' is the moment when I can't hold my tears anymore. Beautiful song. Simply a masterpiece.

This song is a true masterwork (like all of Clutching At Straws really). I've never been an out-of-work alcoholic father (I don't even have kids), who is unable to look his children and ex-wife in the eye, but I still just get this song. The emotion is SO real. Fish is a master of understanding sorrow, regret, broken pride and emotions and the human condition in general. Fish is a legend forever as are Marillion :)

+Dede0601 No. Pink Floyd are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Marillion never will be. In fact, Marillion are largely forgotten, even in their own country. And even if you look at their videos on KZread, you'll find almost every video has comments making negative references in relation to Genesis.

Matt Maloney Well, but I know Marillion and I haven`t heard Pink Floyd and Genesis. I have to add, that my favourite band is Iron Maiden, not Marillion, so I`m not their "mega" fan.
The lyrics, the voice, the guitar, the song - what can I say? It's just so touching.
I remember when I first discovered Marllion. I was working a job I did not like. And I came across the misplaced child hood album. Listened to the whole thing on my shift and was completely moved by it. That was an exciting transition in my life I was about to go to university. A new beginning. But turns out I ended up absolutely miserable there. And I remember just walking alone at night around the school listening to marllion it was one of the few things that kept me going at the time.
This is one of my favourite Marillion songs. I have been there, No.1 at the end of the bar after my wife and I went separate ways, I love this song, it is very special,
Fish sings about real life .I love his work.genius poet.

I've not heard my daughter's voice since this time last year. I know how Fish feels.
You can't write a song like this without something in your life Bringing you to this emotional lyrics
I doubt we will ever see another lyrically gifted song writer such as Fish, some come close and are amazing in their own right but Fish was and still is in a league of his own.
My dad took me to his house and he was so nice to us. We got a tour around his recording studio. He had a few beers and a chat with my dad. It was a fantastic day.

late 1987. Listening to this album from start to finish over and over and over again on my Walkman. Smoking cigarettes and trying to hold back tears because my parents were finally divorcing, it was my senior year in highschool and I felt numb. My father ignored me, really didn't give a damn about anyone but himself. And there was Fish singing "Daddy took a rain check..."

I had forgotten how good Marillion were......great vocals from Fish. A really good band.
One of my parents was an alcoholic in the 80's, and my family was dysfunctional to say the least. No wonder this song and this album spoke to me. I was often upstairs, avoiding the drunk, who was sleeping in an armchair... Daily routine: start drinking at dinner time, continuing to midnight.. every damn evening, seven days a week. It's a mystery how alcohol can take over life... I think Fish describes The Demon Alcohol and emotional struggles in a fantastic way...

Summer of 1987 driving in the rain and this song playing on my stereo. such memories
Ain't no one in here that's left to blame but me Blame it on me, blame it on me...
80´s watching clips of decent music on MTV without ads at night with a girl in the couch without mobile phone and instagram to compete with
When I was 17 I visited a Fish concert and during ‘Market square heroes’ he pushed the microphone in my face to sing a line. Good memory.
I bought this on vinyl in 1987. Watched video for the first time ever in 2019.

Can’t get over how good this song genuinely is.
35 years, oh my, I feel so old! Rotherham what a guy
I was flicking through the channels on the TV On a Sunday in Milwaukee in the rain Trying to piece together conversations Trying to find out where to lay the blame But when it comes right down to it there's no use trying to pretend For when it gets right down to it there's no one here that's left to blame Blame it on me, you can blame it on me We're just sugar mice in the rain I heard Sinatra calling me down through the floorboards Where you pay a quarter for a partnership in rhyme To the jukebox crying in the corner While the waitress is counting out the time For when it gets right down to it there's no use trying to pretend For when it gets right down to it there's no one really left to blame Blame it on me, you can blame it on me We're just sugar mice in the rain 'Cause I know what I feel, know what I want I know what I am Daddy took a raincheck 'Cause I know what I want, know what I feel I know what I need Daddy took a raincheck, your daddy took a raincheck Ain't no one in here that's left to blame but me Blame it on me, blame it on me Well the toughest thing that I ever did was talk to the kids on the phone When I heard them asking questions I knew that you were all alone Can't you understand that the government left me out of work I just couldn't stand the looks on their faces saying, "What a jerk" So if you want my address it's number one at the end of the bar Where I sit with the broken angels clutching at straws and nursing our scars Blame it on me, blame it on me, Sugar mice in the rain, your daddy took a raincheck Did You Know?

I was 18 when I was forced into listening to sugar mice, it was the 1980's, it made me realise how hard it was back then, for me I was one of the very few lucky ones to get a good job. The song is so amazing to capture that time in are history of unemployment and poverty it still makes me feel how lucky I was to have a job.
Mobius loop!... I started listening in 1987. It's 2021 and I'm still listening.
Beautiful song and a perfect video, the part where he sees his wife in the bar and smiles before seeing its not her and the kids fading away before they reach his outstretched arms are as moving as it gets.
Terribly honest and speaking a raw-cruel truth. The father is almost always left clutching the short straw when the relationship ends...

@@anorakus8272 I never tried, was to hurt by the divorce and somehow decided without knowing at the time I wouldn't see both parents again :). So I listen to the first four albums and that's about it. Maybe it was a mistake but that's how it went.
Such a sad, yet soothing guitar melody and great honest, almost poetic lyrics. I believe if they would've stayed with Fish, they would've been way more famous and recognized today...
Fish is a poet its that simple, Marillion is not Marillion without him
I feel the same love for this album and especially for this moving song, as I felt 34 years ago. I imagine the character that Fish impersonates, a man who's lost a lot. What a beautiful, heartfelt melody, what a magnificent guitar solo ! I remember attending a concert of Marillion in July 1987, when the album was released. A great, quite moving concert, at least in my memory. Fish has a special voice not everybody's cup of tea, but he sings with such emotion and a sense of drama, such delicacy or power. His lyrics were really splendid and Steve Rothery and the whole band were at the top of their game at the time.
Love Marillion when Fish is singing. So many happy memories.
that guitar solo....
Crikey, I am LOVING all these old Marillion videos which I never knew existed! Love this song so much!
Their best song by far (and I know its hard to pick) but wow every time it makes me sad when I hear it because we have all been there.
Masterpiece, Marillion, can't think of more lush more melodic , more beautiful prog rock. Otherworldly aliens sent to me from heaven, to deal with trying to get over pandemic times.❤️❤️❤️
just been at MarillionWeekend in Padua..not my generation but totally my band❤ Love every single track they have written so far and they are all amazing musicians & stage animals❤
No denying Fish has a great voice and a great catalogue of songs. I keep returning.
Love Derek & Marillion. Saw them at the Mean Fiddler in London years ago, he was sick as hell, but still gave a great performance. Yes, under rated!!!!! A genre unto themselves I believe! Tae us' fae's like us!!!!

A beautiful video by Marillion and my favorite video!Because it reminds me so much of me, my ex-wife and my past relationship!😢😢😢
Like the first light of twilight, this music opens your eyes to old promises and to all the anomalies of nature. Evocative of powers beyond observation, this piece pull the strings of the heart, attract nostalgia and awaken regrets, flayed lives and the torpor of tormented watchers !!
Fantastic ! Big Fish
The lyrics of Fish...with that gorgeous music ...

This gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. Fantastic music and lyrics.
The guitar playing is masterful and this song means so much to me
I remember first hearing this on Now 10, and being a shallow kid of 13 considered it to be my least favourite track of the compilation🤦♂️. Probably as it wasn't some high energy garbage by S/A/W. How very, very wrong that 13 year old version of me was. This is an absolute masterpiece. Very beautiful melancholic guitar and bass. Amazing lyrics summing up the desperation those of us living outside so-called 'mainstream society' feel, and what the feelings of hopelessness can generate in anyone in such position. Not ashamed to admit this song gets me in tears every time I hear it.
Saw them play this at Brighton last week (2018) and I shed a tear. Beautiful.
A gut-punch of a song. Superb!
This song be better and better every time….Big Marillion fan see them6 times Mmmmm so memory.
