Steve Rothery’s guitar is magic.
Probably one of the most underrated bands, Steve Rothery,s beautiful guitar melodies never fail to capture your soul.
this song is a MASTERPIECE!!!!
Marillion is storytelling through instruments.
Marillion have been around for decades and most people - including some fans - still don't get it. You witnessed ONE SONG and you TOTALLY got it. Cheers to you!
This is my first time hearing this Jim, Iam new to Marillion myself, They are incredible!

I second this comment! This Strange Engine, live, is something that brings me (and a thousand other Convention goers) to a tear each time. To be specific, the second guitar solo does that for me. Reliably.

TSE is by far the very best track ever by Marillion
Marillion also have quite an interesting history as a band. They started off in the late 70's in the clubscene on the English countryside. After a few change-ups in the band, they became one of the biggest 'underground' bands in the UK without a record deal. In the early 80's they finally signed with EMI and then their most successful years started until the painfull split between frontsinger Fish and the rest of the band. Then they found a new frontsinger in Steve Hogarth and Marillion went on a slighly different path with their music. Their recorddeals with EMI got worse and worse over the years and their bandmanager at that time become ever more a burden to the band. At the beginning of this millenium they sacked their manager and declined to a new squeezing record deal from EMI. In order to survive as a band they resorted to 'crowdfunding' on the internet and invented a crowdfunding model which eventually became a standard for startup bands in the music industry. They also started with giving bi-annual conventions. The band managed to survive that way to this day being fully funded by their fans and being fully in charge of their own destiny as a band, not depending on extorting record deals from record companies.

It's that paying for the suprise that I love! What's it going to sound and feel like... will there be another song in this one that goosebumps me, makes me laugh or cry... Brilliant concept for both band and fans. If it were not for this band I would be dead. No lie. Ask others and they will tell you the same!
This became my favorite Marillion track from the first moment I heard it. A genius track. And my god, does Steve Rothery kill it on guitar or what? So much emotion in his playing, and when you combine that with Hogarth’s vocal, wow. I’d highly recommend their song Afraid of Sunlight also. Another beauty.
I actually found this quite touching to watch. As a Marillion fan of 30 years it's great to see someone revisiting what they thought about the band from 30 years ago, and not only liking what they heard but being blown away by it. I particularly enjoyed your reaction at the end of the song where you had to gather your thoughts and take it all in. Perhaps try This Strange Engine next.

Great band! All instrumentalists in the band are highly capable players and Hogarth is a good singer.
In my head I can hear the music and understand the lyrics. I can feel the passion in their performance. My soul understands. Unworldly good.

What a performance. Stunning.
This dvd re-sparked my Marillion glow. I’ve been to 3 conventions since 😉
Ocean Cloud will melt your face.
Yes...this band MAJESTIC...and Rothery on fire on the final solo....
Best lead singer and guitarist and best band bloody ever ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I keep watching this. Love the reaction. I think Marillion fans are always excited when others feel the same way. This is great alongside strange engine, ocean cloud, out of this world and great escape. All can make a grown man cry.

I'd add the live versions of "When I Meet God". The studio version is OK but the live recordings where Steve R adds that crying slide guitar are in another dimension. Second only to Neverland, actually, if I'm honest.
One of my favourite tracks. Marbles is a masterpiece
Steven Rothery is just awesome.. Such emotive playing every time.. He s the x factor in Marillion he elavates the music to something ethereal at times.. He should be in everyones top ten rock guitarist top 10.. If only they got more exposure he surely would
Thanks for the shout out! I'm glad you liked them. This kind of prog rock is masterful song writing and composition with everything serving the song itself. As I have mentioned before, you will also love The Flower Kings and the prog super group, Transatlantic. Epic, melodic, beautiful, rocking, strange, psychedelic and all combined in masterful songs performed by amazing musicians. Since you are a musician yourself, I have a felling they are right up your alley. Peace...
beautiful, dreamy, emotional and precious- so uplifting to see how much feeling is in this song and the performance
Thanks for turning me on to this band Jim. They are becoming one of my favorites!😉😉

You are welcome!
I am jealous that you get to hear this for the first time. Although, it really doesn't get old for me. I cried the first time I heard this song. It is perfection.
As a man who never got into Marillion, you totally and instantly got the spirit of their music on your first listen. Beautiful, smart, very well crafted, reinventing itself from one record to another, uncompromising and honest, that's what Marillion's art is. Your reaction was genuine (of course) and touching, I can relate since this song and this band mean a lot to me...
thank you for this, Marillion is the greatest band on earth
Marillion is one of it's kind!
welcome to the music that does drive a pulse, and fills our souls with euphoria, an body shuddering emotion.. it's old school 'real' music, an it does what it is written for. . nothing in this modern age, an crap that is produced, an listened to now, will ever come close to what seems a lost era of real music. i am old school, an my ears were focused for the likes of pink floyd an marillion, dire straits, gary moore.. you get the drift.. to listen to this, makes me emotional, an happy i know what real music is..
One of the best songs. IMHO
I was there, it was awesome!
Hograth & Rothery 💪👏👏
I love it when someone 'gets it'. :)
F.E.A.R is yet another of their great music collection, i still listent to the old stuff and fish on his own, of which his last album 2020 is absolutely superb, but the current marillion line up is amazing, steve rothery prog rock hall of fame, does some amazing solo work too. and marillions afraid of sunlight is a must listen to if you enjoyed this, as well as montreal, asylum satellite.
I'm a big marillion fan.. you got my subscription. After I could see the emotions hitting you. You understand. I could see that tear in your eye. Steve Rothery plays that guitar like an angel jamming
I remember first coming upon this song on Palladia. I had never heard of Marillion. It was the 2010 high voltage. I thought they were Asia. But I knew they weren't. I also thought, "who is this crazy Bastard singing on the stage?" But the song grew on me. Like Scotch. Not to sure what to think of it at first but I grew to absolutely love it. Then only recently the last couple years I have learned to use the computer and learn more about them. I wish I could go back in time and tell myself about them. I am 42. And from the US.
Brother less than 7 minutes and it was clear that you were "all in". Emotional isn't it, this bunch of legends have had me in tears more times that I can remember.
I keep coming back to this reaction 😁 Knowing how much of a Marillion lover you've become since. It was how I discovered your channel btw!
I love to see the smile break on your face. I rediscovered Marillion a few years back. I was a big fan in the day. But i had that same smile on my face when i caught up with them. Its the joy of surprise!

I've commented on one of your reaction videos before but cant find the comment, also I have you on Facebook and we have chatted about things on the odd occasion. I had exactly the same experience as you. Didn't like fish so dismissed them in the 80s as a young teenager (sorry fish fans just a personal choice thing) Now I am gutted that I missed out on all these years. I discovered them 3 years ago. Stumbled across The space at the Royal Albert hall. Oh my god how did I not know about all this. Spent the last 3 years going through their back catalogue. Bought almost every album. Been to Marillion Weekends and gigs. I'm on the space and have a house full of merch. No money left 🤣but a heart full of Marilion 💜For me they are a way of life not just a band. Love your reaction on this. I'm very often as emotional as you when listening to them.👍😊 I've just come across this again and couldn't help but comment. I'm off to find some more of your reaction vids.

the best version of this song live is Marillion - Neverland (Out of Season 2009) Good video.
My favourite ever song by Marillion.
That unforgettable moment you played the Christmas 2003 cd and you heard Neverland for the first time.
Just listening after seeing you on Marillion monthly. You have a wonderful way of describing your reaction and I will definitely be watching more of your videos ❤
Amazing
Thanks for reacting to one of my fav. Bands ever . Marillion is underrated ..
For me Marilion picked up in 1991 where Pink Floyd left off. Not all songs are great, but jewels like this one make for a loyal and very appreciative listener. Oh shit, what am I babbling... goosebumps, period.
Glad you've found this incredible band, jealous that you have so much to catch up on, you wont be disappointed

@@edwardspencer-small7021 I have to agree with Brave being a bad place to start. I would go with Afraid of Sunlight, myself. It is the perfect h Marillion album in my opinion.
The Marillion fan conventions show what a unique band this is. An entire weekend, three concerts with specially themed setlists that cater to the nerdy fans (so are not compromised by having to play "hits" for casual concert-goers), lots of outside activities... the band must be doing something right, eh!
I think you will find it is time well spent. I have listened to them since the early 80's and I love them more now than ever.
Maybe what reminded you of Floyd was Steve Rothery's guitar, it's incredible the feeling he can transmit, and H (singer) is amazing to see live, he gives himself out on stage every single time, mostly with this song. I have seen them live several times and it's always an amazing show. This song in particular is from an album called Marbles, which might be my personal favourite. Glad you liked it.
Hi Jim. You think this is good, you should try their dvd All One Tonight, filmed at last year's Royal Albert Hall show (which sold out in 6 minutes, by the way). It's an amazing live dvd, showing a band at the top of their game. It's going to be the definitive Marillion live dvd

Seen Marillion several times (both line-ups) over the years and always left feeling elated after witnessing musicianship of the highest, but understated, quality, perfect blend. As you said Jim,Van Halen string wanking it aint but has more soul in two bars than old eddie could ever manage. Great stuff, but do check out "This Strange Engine",stirring music.
I can stand anything when you're with me, I love the lyrics of that song !
I just stumbled upon this again. Must say you've come a long way Jim. Love your reactions. I've found some great music due to you. Keep it up mate.
I fell in love with this band on 2004's Marbles album (an impulse buy based on interesting CD cover). I have since listened to their entire catalogue. I discovered their Fish era albums by working my way back through their early work, which I enjoyed; however, in my opinion I find their work since H (Steve Hogarth) has been in the band more compelling, more varied, and more soulful. I enjoyed watching your reaction. Your facial expressions reminded me of how I felt when I 1st heard Neverland.
Please share more Marillion reactions! I recommend the live 'This Strange Engine' and "Man Of A Thousand Faces"
Zawsze odlatuję :) jedyny taki.....................

Great to see you've been the Neverland, it's a wonderful magical place where dreams can come true. It's full of theatre and lost souls, a place where you can connect with your inner being and emotions. For me it's the best of the new Marillion music. 😆
Mariliion- The Great Escape.
Cheers Jim - love that you are so honestly receptive to new sounds as well as putting aside old perceptions. You have just unearthed a hidden vault of magic! Marillion are ALL chocolate without the wrapper (they are all about content, and don't give a stuff about image). Enjoy the discovery - for me, Marbles is a great album to explore. I see that emotive guitar can hit you in the spot as well, if thats the case, watch The Great Escape (falling from the moon) - hits deep!
@GeeVanderplas

The combination of H's emotive delivery in Great Escape ("Just when I thought I'd seen the last of you...") followed by that solo and then back to H ("So tell me more...") gives me the chills every time! The most emotionally hard hitting music ever created.
never listened to any marillion until early 90`s when heard them do margaret(early 80`s with fish) bought album with that song then every other.. then forgot about em till 2003 . hogarth is incredible performer who gives feeling to it all. BRAVE my fave lp!! great analysis Jim
I heard them on another channel. They are really good. I started to listen to them. Jim this is right up your alley...............
This song comes from a double CD set called "Marbles". I suggest you take a listen to that first as it is quite eclectic in it's style of music. There are two prog styled songs "Invisible Man" and "Ocean Cloud", a dancey pop tune "You're Gone", A few chill out songs "Angelina" and "The Only Unforgivable Thing", a lighter country pop tune "Don't Hurt Yourself", quirky rocker "The Damage". I think it's a great place to start and still represents the current style of the band in 2018.
@progmeup

Agree, Marbles is great. The Damage is really addictive! I also love Anoraknophobia, a bit more straightforward but with some amazing writing. The more recent stuff doesn't convince me as much...
Welcome Home Jim!!!
Please react to Out of this World live - it is about Donald Campbell losing his life attempting the world speed record on water, and incredibly emotional. So much so that Donald Campbell's family wanted members of the band to play it acoustically at his remembrance service when remains were recovered of Bluebird.
This has to be my favorite Marillion video. Watching SOMEONE else discover them, the look on Jim's face, I can see and feel all the emotion and it's beautiful and I kinda envy him that he's hearing this for the first time! Epic. All of it.
It never fails. These guys bring me to reflection and tears.
It's all about music and emotion.

Lovely to meet you Tim!
Very good marillion ❤❤❤
Your comments after the performance hit the nail on the head big time. They are indeed in it for the music and for those people who like what they do. They can make a living out of it as well and even are able to employ a few people next to themselves. And yes, their music is incredibly soulful something you can’t really say of the music from the Fish years (mind you, I do like the albums with him as well). There is a whole swathe of music to discover of which some might be a bit hit or miss but they keep striving towards not simply regurgitating the same idea. Their darkest album is Brave and it is quite a trip and a firm fan favourite. It was followed by Afraid of Sunlight which I consider to be the other side of the coin that it shares with Brave. AOS is texturally a very light album without sacrificing substance. An album all about fallen heroes and burnt out geniuses (OJ Simpson, Brian Wilson, Donald Campbel, Phil Spector, Elvis and Kurt Cobain are touched upon on this album) and is one of my all time classic albums.
times like this... yes my friend
Finally, someone reacting to the best band of the world. And you've chosen a great song. I love this band, seen them live many many times. This strange engine is another great song from this band. And in my humble opinion demonstrates the best these guys can do. Great ritme section, grand keyboard solo, two beautiful guitar solo's and H screaming in the mic. OOh i love for you to see this.
Hi Jim just found you...you have really got it (at last) haha...I'm exactly the same as you....I dismissed them back when i was a teenager also.I'm 57 now and my boyfriend took me to see them 2 years ago and I was impressed!Steve Hogarth is a real character as well as a great singer songwriter and I just loved Steve Rotherys guitar playing! 3 weeks ago we went to the Marillion weekend at De Montfort Hall in Leicester and it was really good...i didn't know half of the stuff they played....but enjoyed it nonetheless. When i got home after the 2 hour drive back i went straight on to KZread and listened to tracks again that they played at the weekend that i didnt know....since then i have listened almost everday for around 6 to 8 hours a day😀🤪.Getting blown away day after day by the sheer Excellence, beauty of the music💞,lyrics🙂🤯😢😯musicianship,Rotherys sublime solos🤯💕.Having all the same thoughts, feelings and reactions as you.Was great to watch your reactions😀...can really see you feeling it! Isn't it great to know that such great music from a well seasoned band exists.Blown away!🤯😯😍Loving it and will do for years and years to come now! Even got my 21 year old daughter adding tracks to her playlist! Will be going to see them later in the year when they play in Manchester. Will know loads more of there stuff by then.I Love...When i meet God,Happiness is the road,The great escape,Somewhere Else,Seasons End on & on😁 Better late than never eh?
