Where did you get this? I made this recording!!!! Rooftops, on Seneca St. July 26, 1983. It is a mono cassette of the FOH mix. I was the monitor engineer and system tech. Marillion's house guy started the show with nothing in the house mix but Fish's vocal mic. In the first minute of He Knows You Know you can hear him turning on all of the other inputs. The band started the set and he wasn't at the board, but the lead vocal mic was on for announcements. Not sure who I ever gave copies of this to, but somehow here it is. I have the original cassette. This show was unforgettable. The opener was a Genesis cover band, and their keyboard player was also called Fish. For some reason back then everyone accused Marillion of sounding like Genesis.

RTF666 Wow, I guess I did make copies for a handful of friends, maybe two or three....wondering now who would have shared it on torrent. Oh well, glad it's being enjoyed by so many. My ex wife took a bunch of pictures that night (film, of course). No idea what became of them.

Wow- this is a very good recording for a cassette from 1983. The skyroom was a great place to see bands. It has been recently renovated, and is currently called "Shea's Seneca". Thanks for sharing this!

In answer to the question of Mick Pointer's departure from the band, it was sometime between April / May of 1983 after EMI had concerns over his technical ability hampering the band, the drummer on this recording is Andy Ward, who left soon after over "substance misuse " issues. Jonathan Mover replaced Andy then left as he couldn't cope with the workload of studio time and gigging, Ian Mosley "took the stool" roughly a year after Mick Pointer's departure. Fish referred this situation as Marillion's "Spinal Tap" moment in the Mick Wall biography of the band. I'm glad that the older bootlegs are coming to light, it's like discovering old photos of childhood one thought had been lost ( or should that be misplaced? )

I probably wouldn't have listened to this tonight but thanks so much again for posting up the band members on this recording. Andy Ward is a very good drummer, he was just another casualty filling in after the drugs took their first drummer out, he is one of the few I have heard that was better early and got worse when their first album came out on EMI. Fish has stated after they parted with Mickey that he didn't really care for any of the percussionist before Moseley joined them. My take is it's not cause they sucked but no one fit the band like Ian Mosely. I love these rare concerts early on. It also sounds like Mark was playing a rental on the beginning of "Script" but that's what I love about these early recordings.. It's all raw talent and it's all awesome! BONUS! THANK YOU!!!

Please correct your rant: Andy Ward was the drummer with drug-problems, NOT their first drummer, Mick Pointer. This is just a false accusation.

+Jan-Jaap de Haan Andy Ward was not the drummer with drug problems at all. I know the true story including Fish kicking the drum kit and sending poor Andy Ward off the drum riser and stage and causing him a serious and painful back injury. Fish at this point was so full of ego it was ridiculous, in the band tour bus all he kept playing was yes and when Andy gave him a tape to play whilst in North America he let it play for a few seconds before winding down the window and chucking it out on the freeway. Andy helped them out and was thrown in at the deep end and then under the bus. Andy actually was suffering from Manic Depression which after so many years of mismanagement as having gone undiagnosed led to his retirement from drumming. Everyone presumed it was a drink and drug problem but it was no more so than any of the other musicians. Obviously at this stage it didn't help that Andy had to effectively change his drumming style due to having cut his hands up in a cry for help that just did not come from the Camel camp at all. It always helps when you are sitting in the same car as Andy driving him around and being told everything from the horses mouth warts and all. Trviewer got it mostly right in that Andy as older just did not fit in the band and was treated poorly after the initial wow its Camels former drummer attitude wore off. He was not a good fit for what they were after. Andy needed work, they needed a drummer. It was never a meeting of minds or spirit. Andy was playing most of this tour in incredible pain but played regardless as ever the true professional.

+Jan-Jaap de Haan My apologies to Mick if I have discredited him or anyone else who is close to him in any untrue fashion, especially with regards to drugs having anything to do with his departure. I went & researched the book I have that is hopefully reliable and the only documented statements on his departure were that his skills were not considered to be what the band or record company was looking for at the time, also mentioned by someone else on these comments. Please dismiss any other untrue mentions I made to any other of the band members as hear say as well. Let's just say I will be more careful as to how I preface my comments in the future, and the sources they originate from. I really enjoyed Mick's earlier work with the band and was amazed at how incredible the band sounded especially in its earlier roots. Thanks again to RTF whoever you are for all of the rare Marillion videos and audio posts on "KZread". I've enjoyed all of the line band ups to this day.

I actually liked Mick Pointer's drum playing. Ian is certainly very good, but I liked the sound of Mick more. It was sharper. It was probably "simpler", but complexity is not always better. To my ears "Script" was brilliantly mixed, much better than everything that came after.

Kinda puts the lie to Andy not being capable of playing with Camel, there was so much more to him not being in Camel than the version officially forwarded. Such a shame. Of course he cannot play anymore due to his Manic Depression however if carefully planned he could easily record on CD and guest as a one off for a video or something. I think Andy's treatment by Camel has been quite shocking really.

Just checked on Wikipedia (which of course is always accurate !) And they had 5 drummers inc Mick between 82 and 84 when Ian Mosely finally joined. Not sure of the exact date Mick left but this might well not be him. He's crap whoever he is.
