...and other important info!
Hi everyone! In today's video, I'll be giving Clawdia Wolf a sunny makeover, and showing the new method I hope to use for sealing in the future!
MSC gives great results, but requires outdoor use and is highly toxic, as well as very expensive. I'm hoping to be able to use my airbrush and acrylic medium and varnish instead.
My airbrush is a Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline with a 0.4mm needle.
I got lots of tips from these other tutorials!

If you're interested in purchasing Marigold or one of my other dolls, please visit my Instagram (look at Highlighted Stories) or email me at dolls@tamamariegray.com.
I'm working on a new, complete website where I'll be selling dolls in future, but it's not quite ready yet!

Thank you!!! That's the sort of vibe I was going for 💗
Oh, a hint for using the liquitex matte varnish, you're apparently not supposed to dilute it with water. It says it on the back of the bottle, I believe. I use the matte varnish only for faceups I do, since I use the sponge method, so it's something I noticed early on.
@gyarumama

May I ask, do you use only the matte varnish? So far I've only used Testors for my repaints and I'm having such a hard time. I bought both the matte medium and the matte varnish in hopes of using a simpler method..

Plasticine Sky I only use the matte varnish. I do acrylic mostly as well, so it works well together. If you want a tutorial on how it can be used, check out Anan Dolls.

Yeah, that's something I mentioned in the video! The water didn't work, so I thinned it with airbrush thinner instead, which helped (I didn't notice that it says that on the bottle, though! That explains why 😅). I realised after I'd finished that Andreja (Nicolle's Dreams) doesn't dilute the varnish at all, so that's what I'll try out next time!
ahhh, i am so happy i was awake to catch this upload!!! she looks gorgeous, really an ancient summer sun goddess feel... great job!! glad the new sealant method worked out alright!

I always do my first sealing with Duraclear on a sponge and leave the MSC for in between layers and to finish. You learn in life that there is always a downside! You learn it even quicker when you start trying to paint tiny heads like Obitsu! I think you can get overingrossed with perfection in tiny faces and really the suggestion of features is much more effective than getting heavy handed. Of course you are a master in your field so I am preaching to the master here. I am sure you are aware of all the pitfalls! She looks positively radiant!
I love the music on this one, and everything else, obviously :)

She’s very beautiful 😍💜
yeah liquitex matte varnish can dry kind of off-white unless you get the ratio exaaaaactly right (something i've only achieved maybe 3 times) matte varnish also works fairly well at giving the plastic some roughness in my experience but just a warning, if you live in a humid climate (i do) it might never dry to its full capacity and still scratch off sometimes, i try my best to combat this by putting my sealed dolls right next to a fan to dry but it still doesn't always work, i hope it'll work better in the winter. i also might try the matte medium method as well to see if that works even better.

Beautiful!! I love the outfit with the face. I think what could help though is using acrylic paint, or just more pencil layers on the eyes to make them pop a bit more and make them more noticeable.
@tamakyuart
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you!💕 I don't really like to use acrylic paint in faceups, especially for the eyes, since even when I've thinned it down I always feel like it ends up a bit textured/lumpy, which spoils the look for me. :( However, you're right that the contrast isn't great in these eyes; I kept going to push the highlights more, then feeling like it was looking too unnatural and erasing them down, but in the end I think I was too cautious and would probably have looked better with brighter highlights! Ah well 😅
Oh cuteee

Lol Dollightful recently made a doll with the same smiling Clawdia Wolf! They're both gorgeous!
She came out so beautiful! I love the final result, and seeing your thoughts on this method of sealing was very enlightening. I also really love her beaded top, is there any chance you'd be willing to show your process for a similar thing in the future?
@tamakyuart
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, definitely; I actually filmed the beading, but it went wrong in a few places and was never an actual pattern to begin with (I usually improvise as I go along and try it on the doll), so I think what I'd like to do is figure out a solid, reliable pattern and make a proper tutorial 😊
Omg with the wet gloss on her eyes it looked like she had cataracts ak! Haha! The gold paints were a beautiful touch. :)

i use this method of sealing all my dolls too as shipping to Norway can up the price on materials quite a bit. Its really nice to hear how its different, and whats the same as with MSC! And i found it quite fun how we both use the same small jam jar for mixing the sealant XD

I'll be watching out for updates about the sealing, as I'm trying to avoid MSC myself. I've still got that white-cloudy finish, which isn't too noticeable on paler dolls, but I'd love to know if you get it to work out for you!
@tamakyuart
6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that was one of the reasons I used Clawdia for this test: flaws in the sealant show up much more prominently on darker surfaces. The second try (diluting with airbrush thinner) actually did get rid of the white cast almost entirely-I just wasn't happy with the shininess of the finish. I'll make sure to update once I've got it! 💕
Love her~ Love all the gold details, so pretty~ could you use just the matte medium for varnishing?
@tamakyuart
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! 💕 In theory I probably could, but since it holds pastel dust so easily I'd expect it to pick up a lot of dust dust as well (I actually did notice that I had to pick out more dust than usual before sealing each layer-there's always some but it was a bit more noticeable), and the texture overall is a little tacky, so I would be a bit nervous of its longevity as a final varnish.
I get a super egypt vibe from thism its very beautiful.

You can cut and sand down her fangs. I have seen this in several of your dolls. The face up is OK. The outfit can use your usual flair and flash. Blessings
@tamakyuart
6 жыл бұрын
Since you know I can do it, it's fair to assume that I purposefully decided not to... I wanted her to have a fierce, powerful vibe, since she's based on the sun. I didn't spend too long planning or making her outfit because this doll was mostly to test out the sealant method, so I concentrated on the faceup and kept the rest basic rather than risk messing up a doll I was very invested in. 😊

Could a wet q-tip work on getting the pastel off the sealant?
@tamakyuart
5 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, maybe in certain places! It would be a problem for areas around/over watercolour pencil, of course, and would probably also create a hard edge with a dark outline since pastel darkens when wetted, but it would probably be helpful if I wanted to remove a pastel area completely. Thanks for the suggestion! 💕
@AsAboveISoBelow

No problem, and I totally understand about the pencil! Also your work is gorgeous, totally happy I follow you
This may seem kinda weird but this doll reminds me so much of Akasha from Queen of the Damn 😲
@tamakyuart
6 жыл бұрын
Not weird at all; I totally see what you mean, and someone else mentioned that too! 💗💗💗
The magic eraser is hard to use , you can use pencil eraser or any hard will work better in erasing using liquitex 👌🏻😍
@tamakyuart
5 жыл бұрын
Someone else suggested a normal eraser too, which does seem to be helping to remove what pastel is leftover after the putty/kneaded eraser! The problem is that I typically use the kneaded eraser to do effects which can't be done with a normal eraser, so it's not a straightforward substitute, unfortunately :(
Hi! I am not sure if you still respond to comments but I am wondering if the doll becomes sticky after a while?
@tamakyuart
7 ай бұрын
This is so late, I'm sorry - but at least I can say for anyone else wondering that no, it has remained the same up to now, and those I have made since then have too :)
I tried this method of sealing but ... my airbrush kept getting blocked by dry sealent even though I tried my best to clean it every time :/ What do you use for cleaning the airbrush?
@tamakyuart
6 жыл бұрын
So far, what's worked for me is: flushing the airbrush with clean water after every spray until it's as clear as possible of matte medium (so, when the water stops looking milky); then, at the end of the day, or whenever it starts clogging up and fails to spray, taking it apart to clean the needle and nozzle, and flushing it with acetone (I specifically bought an airbrush with solvent-resistant parts, such as the o-rings/washers, but you might need to find something else if yours isn't like that).
Her eyes looked rather "lifeless/dull" and kind of creepy to me, as you never added any shine/sparkle to them. other than that it was fun to watch you create this beautie. :)
What kind of gun you using? I have tried this method, sometimes it worked, sometimes it did not, my biggest issue is either the fluid is way too thick and does not want to through the gun or it is too liquidy and does nothing on the doll's head...

@@tamakyuart dang I never thought anyone would mention the needle size in the description haha... I will try with another one! And I will also check the other video as I've only seen Nicolle's one. Thanks!
I read/heard in other videos liquitex sealant is non toxic... but one person did say we still need a mask? Which is it?
@tamakyuart
2 жыл бұрын
Both 😊 The liquid itself is not the problem, but when you spray anything it becomes a mist which you can inhale. The small spray particles are why you should wear a mask.
she looks amazing. Though with the pastels, why don't you try using a stiffer eraser cut down a bit so that you can get the detail instead of a kneaded eraser. You might have better luck.
@tamakyuart
6 жыл бұрын
I'll give it a try! I've always used kneaded ones for pastels since they're designed for picking up loose pigment like that, but maybe a stiffer one would help get the remainder off after lifting as much as I can with the kneaded one... Thank you! 💕
@pai009

I think it'll be alright as long as Face-ups are the only thing you use that specific eraser for.
@dodisrestorationandrepair6339

When I was doing chalk pastels long ago, I used gum erasers to get a firmer "erase" without damaging the finish. I liked it much better than a standard pink eraser with the grainy bits.
Do you have to use an airbrush? Or can you apply it with a paintbrush or sponge?
@tamakyuart
5 жыл бұрын
You can try what you like and see if it works for you, but you will of course not get the same texture as you will be spraying. If you use pencils and pastels, that’s a problem; if you use only acrylics, it’s probably not so bad.
