Personally I don't think an electronic organ can ever replace a pipe organ for depth and purity of sound. Even listening through the tiny speakers of my laptop I can tell that this is the real thing. She was absolutely brilliant. A life dedicated to this amazing instrument, thank you Marie Claire Alain

I've heard about Marie-Claire Alain more than 20 years ago when Walcha's performances of Bach and archive vinyl recordings from Radio Belgrade's 3rd program formed my taste. Walcha stayed with me ever since but in the meantime I listened to other organists playing Bach's organ cycles, like Rubsam, Preston and others, and deliberately, out of my dumb prejudice, I was skipping Marie-Claire Alain. Then after hearing her 2nd 1978-1980, then 3rd 1987-1994, then 1st 1950s-1960s cycles, for me, with Walcha she is the best, the very top, my choice, my preference, allways It was like a shock, a revelation, surprise. One can easily fall into the pit of prejudice. Musical, human, sublime and earthy enlightenment came after a long delay. If I was organ student I would never pick aggressive vindictive evil mentor, no matter how knowledgeable genial or powerful in the musical world he is. A nurturing kind hearted empathetic great pedagougue who is a great artist too beats all the nasty ones every time. The latter make you hate music, destroying, fouling one of the most beautiful things a human being can experience - listening to, performing and loving music.

I wouldnt say her English or German were very good--ee twas more like zee French transcribed with a lot of faux amis. She knew her subject and had a very remarkable memory without specific preparation. She made hundreds of recordings and gave thousands of concerts, remarkable in that she followed in her father's footsteps (titulaire at St Germain en Laye) and brother's (always concluding with his better known compositions) footsteps and recorded a lot of œuvres completes for organ. She had these scholarly lessons, for example look at JSBach's annotation of DeGrigny Organ Masses or the manuscript of the Orgelbuechlein. She never composed or improvised at these concerts, but played most of the pieces from memory, so in that sense she was very humble. I dont think she ever wasted time listening to other performers but wanted to hear how the organ sounds from below at least for a couple pieces. She was a good teacher because she focussed on the music score objectively and wouldnt criticize performances of others. Just smile. Unusual that her brain could succumb to Alzheimer's; the legend is that musician's brains donot. Worth a study. Diane Bish has a remarkable repertoire also, somewhat cherry picking though (Lemmens Fanfare in D major again!) and never a complete-works player. Not a scholarly musicologue, she did get around to a lot of European organs in her Joy of Music half-hours. She would play on any organ no matter the out-of-tuning. Hector Olivera changes the pipe organ by adding his own electronic bit and has a more remarkable classical memory. He is not a cherry picker and has a lot of arcane pieces in his repertoire.

"A small, humble organist"!! Was she joking? I think not, I think she was just realistic but extraordinarily talented. Long live pipe organs by the way. I don't think I will ever believe that some electronic box with a load of speakers can produce the same depth or quality of sound

Cordialement.

Weak on the pedals for the BWV664 playing at 4:00 imo (a piece I know well and have heard played in many different ways). I strongly doubt that it is a audio and recording quality problem and I'd be curious about the reasoning behind it assuming it was intentional.
