Winter Dreams grew from the 'Farewell' pas de deux, which MacMillan created to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's 90th birthday. The full ballet, created for The Royal Ballet, had its premiere in 1991. It is inspired by Chekhov's play The Three Sisters but is not a narrative portrayal of the whole story. Instead, MacMillan delves into the inner lives of the characters and displays their hidden thoughts and feelings through a series of solos, pas de deux and ensembles.
Winter Dreams ranges in style from the lyrical, yearning pas de deux for Masha and Vershinin, to the folk dances performed by the local soldiers, and MacMillan's characteristically dramatic style, with every movement full of human emotion, is evident throughout. This is matched with Tchaikovsky's music, arranged by Philip Gammon, and traditional music for balalaikas, and set within the period, provincial atmosphere of Peter Farmer's designs.

Not gonna lie, whenever I watch these two dancing together, for the first 5 minutes I'm constantly thinking, "They used to be married! This is so weird!" But they're so talented and such incredible dancers (and professional) that you soon forget and just enjoy the moment. It's such an interesting/unusual dynamic, and I have a million questions I wish I could ask, but obviously their relationship/friendship is no one's business but theirs! I don't want Nela to ever retire!!!

They were actually married and were such a gorgeous couple. Sadly they splited up a couple of years ago and it is so amazing to see them still working together and getting along like two real professionals

She got him hired and promoted. He doesn't work without her. He holds her secrets hostage. The director of the company allegedly loves to spend time with him in friendship obviously. Hearsay obviously all false. Tho i cant say he seem to be a dancer worthy of roh

She’s got IT! I mean truly; she’s got it ALL! And I adore her as well: one of those rare talents that truly lives onstage (with perfect technique) But she is an equally astounding & wonderfully kind person offstage. Just all around: so much love for you Nela! 💖😌👏💐

I love watching these tremendous artists both dance from their souls and also take creative direction so beautifully. They don’t let their egos get in the way of producing the most complete performance possible. Marianela is such an incredibly natural actress and dancer, when I watch her I see her movement naturally develop, it never looks forced or posed she is just so fluid
Thiago is adorable!! I met him several years ago and he was so humble and charming.
She is just so amazing. There is nothing more to say. Just a dream of a dancer.
I can see Marianela for a long time. She is so clean, and expressive, and no words can describe how much stunning she is. ♥️

I have a ballerina friend, quite a beautiful, well known dancer, who had to stop her career. When she went (?) 'en point' and would spin on one toe, she would release violent farts, even heard over the orchestra. She would be in tears, but the public would be hysterically laughing. So sad and awful for her.

"Ballet is Woman." --George Balanchine. I think women's bodies are so much more flexible than men's that they can do more amazing things, though I do love to see men jump and pirouette.
