Thanks- a blessing to be able to see & hear her. Never occurred to me that Dr. King chose this spot because it was so meaningful to the African American community (and all Americans) due to this event, what a beautiful choice that was, and to see here Aretha singing the same piece at another landmark event in DC in 2009. Anyone who loves Anderson would also enjoy the article written about her by Langston Hughes, it's very good. Thank God for all these good people, including Mrs. Roosevelt.

DAR hasn't changed very much today. I brought this up at a meeting thinking it was an item of interest. Instead, I was kicked out. Although I have 4 ancestors who fought in the revolution. What they stand for today is totally opposite for what our ancestors fought. I am proud to be in the company of Eleanor Roosevelt.

Hey, that old guy just gave a very important and eloquent intro. That was history in the making. 1939 this was big stuff. There are versions of this on KZread without him talking, but it is wonderful that his speech is available for posterity's sake. He spoke well. Just saying. Peace.

@jpell225 You do understand it was the DAR that blocked her form singing? The DAR mainly at that time (1939)was a Northeastern group, not Southern, Western or even Mid Western group. It had chapaters nation wide, but was strongest in the NE. Glenn Beck would have been against them then, as many Americans were. There was over 75,000 in the Mall when she sang, and many today still don't understand King came to give his great speech there because of this event.
