I appreciate the diversity of the opera singers in this video.

The precision that mariah makes whenever she's hitting the notes, she just hit it straight beautifully.

Mariah!!! You are so incredibly blessed with such a powerful voice. I know many people do not understand what a complex voice she really has but trust me.. It's not screaming. It is true power.

This video isn’t a battle of singers but a highlight of what different techniques sound like in the same ranges. Mariah isn’t singing the way an opera singer would, or the other way around, and it really shows the contrasts and similarities in the tones and timbres produced

What makes you biased I don't know, but see how she struggles, and how easy it is to hit these notes for these sopranos! By the way... Head voice and whistle voice are different ... See her posture, she's standing stiff in one place, these sopranos have to act, move, bend, twist and sing as well, notice how she has to cover her ears every time she sings these notes and none of the sopranos do that, she has her voice on mic, the sopranos have to sing louder than a whole orchestra...I love Mariah so much, but, seeing your comments about the sopranos and their fans make me quite mad..

I have my own comparisson of male high note and female high note G5 male = D6 female So, C7 female = F6 male I think some of the woman opera singer are on the same level as Dimash in term of headvoice range

Technoque wise of course opera is better. But sound wise, musicallity and artistry. Maroah. Ill choose Mariah tho ciz Mariah still had a great technique on those while having better sound, musicallity and artistry. Tho its impressive for opera singers to keep their headvoices up to 7th octave.

Mariah is amazing, but she uses Whistle Register and the Opera's singers used Head Voice. In this case sing with pure head voice in 6th octave is insane and super hard. Whistles is hard but the the pressure you use to support and sustain those notes in your head voice is really hard.

mariah carey is really a pop music. Her high notes have beat lots of, lots of opera sopranos easily. These opera sopranos were trained to sing high notes. However, Madonna can easily hit the high notes that most Opera Sopranos cannot reach.

Lol they use different registers. Not only Mariah. But Male singers who master whistle register can hit higher notes than Mariah. But these opera singers have developed head voice. If they're about to singing together you won't able to hear Mariah at all.

@@moonlightelf591all of those performances took place in 1998 when she was having a lot of vocal issues from nodules, nodules restrict airflow and prevents the voice from opening up as much causing a raspy, strained and an overall weaker sound. Because of this Mariah’s mic technique was different in that year, she didn’t like projecting directly into the mic the way the others do because she wasn’t as confident that a clean sound would come out.. so of course they drowned her out, but it would be much more even in the early 90s.

mariah head voice is weak and doesn't project like opera singer.....and she uses whistle too early while other opera singers still use head voice with great control

I used to think I wanted to kidnap Mariah Carey and *_FORCE_* her to sing "Angel of Music" cause I think it's *Blasphemous* that her singing the song doesn't exist. But, with this video and a nother where she talks about Not *_actually_* attempting "Operatic Singing" as that's a different _Method_ of singing that you have to be trained for and _gifted_ in. I now realize why it doesn't exist.... I still very much think it should though... even if *She* wouldn't consider it *_Actual_* opera singing, I'd still love to hear *HER* tone on those high notes.

​@@cedricdiggory400 late reply but Mariah has INSANE VOLUME CONTROL. These notes would've been as loud as a belt if she doesn't control the volume. Not to mention, in terms of volume, head voice is supposed to be the loudest while whistle is supposed to be comfortable to hear. They're using different registers and techniques, so don't compare them like that.

Both sings amazingly, but operatic singers usually sing in the flageolet register (connectable to the modal registers, here I separate flageolet and whistle registers) because they need to project their voice over the orchestra. While pop singers use mics (which would not be a bad thing, there's no better than the other), which is why Mariah could sing higher into the 7th octave, but you hear air leaking in the notes, as opposed to classical soprano's high notes (again, it is not a bad thing, just different techniques).

mariah fans that bash opera are a little strange to be honest. Not going after either group but you can't with a clear conscience say that opera singers aren't good. They are the most talented singers. In contemporary music it is possible but less likely to find singers with similar range, though contemporary singers still have great quality and tone on par with opera.

They are of course very well trained and therefor their singing is more consistant and resonant. Being that said, the rest is just personal preference. Even a well sustained and powerful note by a soprano can sound irritating to someone that prefers a softer and more delicate sound. I personally enjoy both.

I'm a huge lamb(how we, MC fans, call ourselves), but these coloraturas have more power. Why? They were trained for Opera. Mariah, though, said in one interview that she was entering the opera world, but said it was not what she wanted. Her mother is an opera singer and she always wanted Mariah to sing Opera instead of Pop. Mariah herself said she was a huge Opera fan and that she respected it like crazy. But Mariah decided to enter the music industry instead. Her mother was her vocal coach for opera, too! That tells us that she can sing Opera, but that's not what she wanted. I'm a 15 year old male baritone that sings Opera. My range is F2-C5(D6 in falsetto, also, I hate using fry, so I don't mention my lowest note on it because I don't use it) and I absolutely LOVE Opera. Even though I love it, I'm thinking of entering the music industry instead. I just see Pop music as risky. Anyways, I'm pretty sure Mariah can sing Opera, she just decided to take another path. If you hear her acapella on "All in your mind" where she's singing in the 7th octave, you can hear her Opera roots!

Completely agree. She had a much more natural sound at 19-20 years old (1990). After the very early 90's, she declined. That said, you can't compare TRUE Opera singers, there on another level. And this video gives poor examples of Opera singers. They're much better opera singers out there.

***** Yeah she was. Her mom was an opera singer that's how she was influenced.

It's kind of unfair to compare Mariah and opera singers, as even though she was trained by her mother, an opera singer, she was not trained to sing opera; she has 'mad respect' for opera but does not pursue a career in opera or even peruse some of its techniques. I've never thought it to be fair to compare an opera singer to a contemporary singer, but because one's better than the other, but mostly because both singers would have to be singing in the same style for there to be a proper analysis, as a lot of trained singers use *completely* different techniques while singing contemporary music in order to further develop or retain a certain sound.

They may use mics for recording purposes, but as an art form opera is not amplified. You use your resonators to create really high overtones (called the singer's formant) that carry over the orchestra or chorus. Opera has been around since the 1600s and microphones weren't used for music until 1900s. Even Wagner (who wrote the stereotypical fat lady singing her lungs out operas) wrote and performed all of his music before microphones were around (his last opera was written 20 years before the microphone).

Lol Mariah looks all peaceful while hitting her high notes.

I LOVE MARIAH! SHE is Sooooo Hot! She is my Favorite! However . . . singing over a full orchestra in the pit, without amplification, is phenomenal. So, until Mariah accomplishes this vocal feat . . . in my eyes( being a professional vocalist who sings both opera and pop genre), she is not as good a technician. But it does nothing to diminish her great skill as an Artist of the Highest caliber. Arguably, the Best. I could love to sing a duet with her.

@@TheeeDanielR Hello Mr. D, Certainly you did not read my comments correctly and try to dismiss my stated fact. In no way would I be the fool to denigrate Ms Carey-she IS the Diva of pop music. But singing without a mic is an outstanding ability and understanding obtained through exceptional training. Acapella doesn't count. As mentioned before, operatic singing techniques were developed for voices to be heard over the orchestra. There are some exceptions if the singer has not fully developed their technique and, therefore, has a smaller voice. As I stated before I am a solid fan of Ms Carey and listen to her jams daily, and use them to keep my chops tight as I practice daily on my drums. Additionally, when I rehearse my vocal repertoire of duets- her rendition of Endless Love with Mr. Vandross is always a necessary staple.

From C6-E6, the best is Price of course and even thought Callas and other big names are not included in this video, there is no comparison with Mariah, she is far inferior with the big opera names.....but the best after F6 up to C7 is Mado Robin she bits them all, she even can do vibrato with her notes, it is clear and beautiful. Secondly I like Mariah Carey, even thought she is not a fully trained classical opera singer, she has elements of classical singing technique and her whistle notes are powerful enough and more pleasant to the ear than other opera singers. There rest of the opera singers, most of them were forcing or their sound was like a squirty toy, very thin in nature or too piercing, so what if they have more power? the point is to have also a pleasant timbre or else there are many people around the world who can scream, but can they sing? and if can sing, do they sound pleasant? Mariah carey has an airy whistle but it is more beautiful than a clear thin or piercing sound. Or to be fair, her sound fits the style of music she does and it is not easy to do at all, or else EVERYONE and many opera singers would be able to do what she does and be more famous than Carey. Many are under the impression that she is what she is because she had Sony behind her, NO she is what she is because she is one of the best song writers ever. She has an amazing flexible voice, she writes her own songs which in the 90s where and still are TOP and the most difficult to sing that no other singer/song writer has surpass her. And there is Yma Sumac, she is a caregory of her own vocally, because she sounds like a bird. Very exotic in nature.

How many of these notes do you guys think Mariah could succesfsully sing in opera had she been opera singer? As cute her tone is. the other women sound stronger.

I think you havent noticed but Mariah sings in front of 30000 young cheering fans while opera singers sing over an orchestra for a majority middle aged crowd of 2000-5000? I play in a 90 person orchestra and untrained its not even hard to sing over it...

***** I play in an orchestra. Of 100 people. My conductor does not use opera techniques but even the people in the back can hear him when he tells us to stop. An orchestra is not as loud as you think.

***** actually Mariah Carey was initially an opera singer that transferred very well to pop singing. So she herself is technically considered an opera singer since she learned how to sing operatic music first.

Do you have any idea what it takes for an non-amplified singer to project over an orchestra of 90 players into a theatre holding 3000 seats? Those kind of voices are extremely rare.

I am amazed that you, being an instrument player in a big orchestra don't know that a voice that is not classically trained could never sing a whole opera. Shouting on top of an orchestra is not hard but SINGING on top of it and being able to be heard in the last row of a 3000 seats theatre, that is a whole different story. Do ask your conductor and see what he has to say. Don't let your love for Mariah become blind fanaticism. The fact that Mariah doesn't know how to project over an orchestra doesn't make her less of a great singer. She truly is the greatest pop singer.

I love Mariah but Opera singers don't use mic, this comparison is on a way... just dumb.

It seems to me that this was not a competition, they show the level of Maria in order to hear the sounds that coming out of her throat, she's bright. And of course show what level it arrives. Mariah Carey is also an excellent singer. And not only these sounds, she has a divine voice, she writes, is a talented person .... Is one of the best singers in the world!

I'm not intended to be a musical critic. But, what's the point of making comparisons between opera singers and a pop singer? Hateful comparisons.

obviously the opera singers are better ! alot stronger and can hold it longer :) but mariah is still good :)

Mariah has a lovely voice. The difference? Opera singers don't need amplification. You couldn't hear Mariah without a mic.

Eddy6159 I love Mariah, she truly is the best singer in pop music, in my opinion. But what Goldenthroat86 meant is that Mariah could not be heard in a closed theatre above an orchestra without a microphone, and that is true. That doesn't make her less of a great singer. They are just different styles of singing.

I know what he/she meant. And I was just stating that Mariah does larger venues then Theatres so in that type of setting she needs a microphone. I'm sure if she was somewhere like the Apollo she would definitely be heard. I'm not sure how audible it's be, but I'm sure she'd be heard.
