The guy who is singing with Mariah is Trey Lorenz who has been her backup singer and long time friend since the beginning of her career. He has an incredible voice and briefly had a solo career of his own which unfortunately didn't work out because he didn't have the right promotion and management.

A live performance that went to #1! Iconic, I would call that. She was really on top of the world. Trey Lorenz is a real one!

This cover went number one just based on this performance alone. And to think it was a last minute decision to add it.

Mariah worked on Trey's debut album with him!! He's been her backing vocalist since the beginning of her career and still works with her. She celebrated his birthday at her house not too long ago. They perform I'll Be There, Endless Love and One Sweet Day together whenever they're on the setlist!!

Trey Lorenz is a testament To how Collaborative, Loyal & Encouraging Mariah is to those around her. He's been there since the Beginning. He wasn't promoted correctly by the label when his solo Album was released. He has an Incredible Range as well. This Song, was and may still be, the only Song in Billboard Charts History to make the quickest Jump to #1 . I believe in a week or two, it shot from outside the top 100 to #1 because of this Live (& Last Minute Addition) performance. She was encouraged by the Label (Sony Columbia) to do a cover in her setlist.

@@jennifertebomosiane9596 the first one debuted at Number 111 on the Billboard 200, and combined both albums sold 62,000 copies…:like I said, he never made it as a solo artist…no artist that makes it goes back to background singing…the end.

That guy is trey lorenz and he’s been working for mariah for 32 years. This is the performance that introduced me to Mariah, I’ve never heard sounded that magical and beautiful at the beginning of the song.

He’s her best friend/backup singer till now…

I think you guys will really enjoy check Mariah and Trey performing this song in 2001, almost 10 years later after this performance that you just watched, live at the mariah's special TV appearance "a home for the holidays".

I love that her debut era was mostly devoted to the American market, but still was well on her way of becoming a global superstar, this MTV Unplugged concert is when she absolutely BLEW UP everywhere and never looked back #Legend

I was gonna say that back up singer is named Trey Lorenz but, I see many ppl already said so. He is so very talented. If you look back at old video performances and new you will see him. And yes, just like the other comments, I was going to point out that her long standing relationship with him is a true testament to how loyal she is to her ppl. I'm so glad you're getting around to hearing all her stuff from the beginning. I was a fan from the beginning of her career. I remember hearing Vision of Love for the first time on the school bus. Lol. I remember falling asleep to the Music Box tape and my sister arguing over who's turn it was to turn the tape over if we hadn't dozed off. 😂 Mariah is the best. I absolutely love her. ❤️
