What I find so intriguing about this song is that, despite it being released and produced in the early 1990s, when the style of music was far different from what it is now, the production, melody, and style of this song still sounds so fresh. I suppose that's one reason why this song will stand the test of time. There is familiarity and nostalgia from old times attached to it, but it'll always sound like a jam you could hear on Top 40 radio in any given year or music era and it would stand out as a masterpiece. This song is timeless and so well written. Merry Christmas, everyone!

That's exactly how Mariah wrote it! She said when she was writing the song alongside Walter, she wanted the song to be "timeless". She wanted the music to be able to be played year after year. She successfully wrote this masterpiece!! It's amazing!

She cant read sheet music BUT she can play keys on the piano and theres video footage proving it, so her mapping out a songs melody on a piano/keyboard herself isnt far fetched. She isnt just a lyricist, shes a melody creator, so she guides the instrument players what notes to hit and crafts the song basically using her voice. That doesnt take away from the fact she has stated she created the melody for aiwfciy on a keyboard.

There’s a reason this song sounds so timeless, it was produced using the “wall of sound” approach popularized by Phil Spector. Each instrument and vocal recording is layered and stereo’d with multiple takes, giving it a large “sing along” sound. A great example from one of Phil’s songs in the 60s would be “Be My Baby” by the ronettes or “and then he kissed me” by the crystals :)
