Maria Ressa, Journalist and CEO of Rappler - BBC HARDtalk

No world leader better epitomises the strong man style of political leadership than President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines. One hallmark of his rule? A visceral dislike of scrutiny from the independent media. HARDtalk’s Stephen Sackur speaks to journalist Maria Ressa who founded the Rappler news website and has just been convicted of cyber-libel in a case that has raised worldwide concern. Is press freedom being strangled by populist politics?

May the whole world know what is happening in the Philippines like what happened before. The role of media TRIES TO PUT PEOPLE BEHIND THEIR OWN AGENDA. They were not really news reporters because they are the one making news to fool people FOR THEIR OWN AGENDA. I was once a part of a research survey on the Political optimism of the Filipinos with the Duterte administration last year. I was assigned to interview 20 people. Only 1 out of 20 doesn't like the Duterte Administration. I asked my fellow field researchers and they only had 1-2 interviewed people out of 20 who aren't satisfied with the current administration. Needless to say, the majority of Filipinos likes how President Duterte handles the Philippines. They trust Duterte and they feel safer now than five years ago. The 83% approval rate is true. Maria Ressa is just triggered because she can't win her court trails so she blamed it on the Philippine President. And kept saying that Philippine Press Freedom is being suppressed. Please don't believe her. She's pure BS and every Filipino knows that.

The Nobel Prize Award Committee have already been infected by global agenda against President Duterte. Its a clear message that PPRD is being indirectly attack by countries against his governance. Specifically his blossoming relationship with Russia. The Nobel Prize for Maria Reesa is a warning. Of all the Journalist who are deserving for this kind of prestigious award, why on Earth did she won it? If democracy is dead, why are majority of Filipinos can freely write or express opinions in different social media platforms? Is she some kind of delusional? at 8:39 when she said about “more than 60k people got arrested” and that D30 ordered the military to shoot down violators - BIGGEST JOKE EVER! I got arrested for violating curfew while drinking at a bar, all 150 of us there…we never experienced violence in any form. Yes, we were detained for 3hrs max, signed some papers at the center, paid the fine, got stamped, then released, and that’s it. I even got to enjoy a hearty mid-night meal at a side-walk eatery after the incident while there were policemen around. If I ever felt any ounce of fear at that time (not fear for my safety/security, but, for my reputation)..t’was just totally fair ..that’s bcoz of my own doing, that’s bec. i violated an ordinance… I may not agree always with what the gov’t say and do, but, I would never lie about the current situation of my beloved country. Ressa, your eloquence and wit have been put into waste. I used to admire you. It’s so disappointing to know that people like you change (certainly not for the better) and lean toward bad political agenda/propaganda. Not to mention Rappler’s questionable credibility. Hmmm.I wonder who nominated you for the Nobel though. Your impression of truth basis what’s happening in the Phil, definitely needs to be revisited.

Pero Hindi Gaya dati, sila lang yung nakaka pag papahayag kasi dahil sa internet, even single person can do report what really happens, live Facebook at live KZread, sa Balita Ng mainstream pinilit nilang tinuro si Duterte biglang Dectador dahil sa pag declara Ng martial law pero na failed sila. Maria Ressa really had a hardtalk with Mr. Zackur, especially with her twisted ideas about how the Filipinos, in general, feel and think Duterte handles his country. For sure, majority of the Filipinos couldn't care less if she won a Nobel Peace award, and, if only somebody will conduct a survey about what the Filipinos think regarding her Rappler media outlet, she might have 2nd thoughts about these BS opinions of hers.

She said "the Philippines is living under a climate of fear and violence" as a blanket statement. That's all theatrics. The Philippines is not at all the country she portrays it to be. Filipinos are one of the most passionate people who will boldly stand by what they believe in and not fear to express it. Media reporters can publicly criticize whomever they want and it would not be a big deal as long as they're not libelous and slanderous; otherwise, they'd have to be ready for the legal repercussions. If anything, the media should fear the drug dealers more than Duterte because those are the people who would likely cause serious harm if anyone crossed them. Stephen could see right through her and understood the dichotomy between lies and facts in the eyes of Maria. He's skillfully intuitive and pragmatic at the same time. The interview looks like a psychiatrist talking with his patient. They should have given him the Nobel.

If europe will continue to have journalists like him, its future is secured in the battle of the hearts and minds of mankind. That is only if they would. Facts do not necessarily mean will go their way but their long tradition of being right gives them a big head up. Otherwise, the future is multipolarity, diversity and balanced interests.

I was raised in Davao City and I feel safe since Duterte was the Mayor. I know the difference between a Duterte as a mayor and someone who's not. This woman tells lies upon lies.

RESSA's heart is full of hatred and negativities... You can't hear something positive coming from her mouth. This interview really speaks of why Ressa was convicted to libel.

Don't you guys forget that MDS allied with BBM and BBM stood with MDS despite having a very low witnning rate before. Not to mention hey were the only ones in the house of representatives that stood for justice among other useless officials.
