THE SONGBIRD: The coloratura soprano Maria Remola (1930 - 2012) is known to coloratura insiders and "high note freaks" as her hard-to-find Cuban-made aria recital disc on vinyl from the 1960s contains an astounding survey of stratospheric final notes: High G-sharp for Lakme and Gilda, High A-flat for Violetta, High A for Rosina -- and a High B in the Adam Variations! She made three other solo recital discs of Zarzuela and Cuban songs, art songs, and a supper club cross-over program, all on Cuban recording labels. Most all of this repertoire is already available on KZread for anyone curious to hear more, but I did not find this gem I'm posting now of her singing Eva Dell'Acqua's 1893 bird song with harp accompaniment. She doesn't give us any of those extreme high notes, but does throw out a quite long High E-flat at the end!
It is easy to think of Remola as Cuban, but she was actually born in Barcelona and moved to Cuba in 1952. Her professional debut came in Havana in "Dona Francisquita." She became a local star, but toured to Japan and Europe. It has been said by the daughter or Remola's accompanist that she would sing Lucia's mad scene in the higher key and her cadenza included trills up the scale from High D6 to High D7, and that she would sing the famous staccato figures in "Der Hölle Rache" an octave higher than written, so High F7s!? (No recordings exist of these dubious feats.) María Remolá es brillante, una soprano como hay pocas. Alcanza alturas increíbles. También es una gran actriz y una bellísima persona. Tuve el honor de conocerla cuando llegó a Bulgaria para hacer una gira y me tocó la dicha de servirle de traductora.
Beautiful voice with awesome high notes.
La conoci muy cercanamente durante años y Remola era capaz de alcanzar el ultimo mi natural en el teclado del piano con su voz que alcanzaba las cinco octavas.

Do you have any recordings of her Lucia or Queen of the night? Do you remember how she had sung it?
Remola is amazing! I'm looking for her Caro Nome everywhere, but unfortuntately I can't find it anywhere... But so glad for this clip! :D

I just checked and I see that I do have her Caro nome! So I will post that down the road (when I get to the Italian works).
She had such a wonderful voice. Its so sad there are not more recordings of her available. She had a beautiful low and middle range. I'm sure she could sing 5 full octaves.j

@@billystrachan3119 I've had two of these type voices in my studio. One was a really high soprano like Robin, the other had an alto sound in the middle and continuously got easier all the way to the top of the piano. Very amazing... both could sing C 8 ! (Yes that's not a misprint...it was the highest C on the piano)

It is said she ended Lucia with sustained F7, and sang the staccato notes in Queen of the night an octave higher so F7 ? Some accounts say she ended Lucia with a F#6 sustained for 45 seconds. Both are really a feat nevertheless.

More fine voice but soporific musicianship. At 1.5x speed this starts to sound like music...
