Maria João Pires Discovering Sound

Maria Joao Pires - Discovering Sound
Hidden in the depths of the Portuguese country, pianist Maria Joao Pires's house and intriguing cultural centre is located, which attracts young talents and renowned musicians from far and wide. Pires deliberately established the place far beyond the reach of the official music business, to be able to propagate her passion for art, music and life according to her personal views. So, she gives classes according to her personal artistic principles, assisted by other teachers. To the piano sounds of composers like Chopin, Schubert, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms and one or two modern composers, Discovering Sound draws a portrait of both the centre and the pianist herself. The virtuoso piano player elucidates her distinct ideas, teaches, organises an in-house concert and bakes bread. `When you're very successful, you become isolated. Here in Belgais, I'm at home.'

DISCOVERING SOUND is a film about Belgais: the home and arts center of the world famous Portuguese pianist Maria João Pires. From all parts of the world artists and students visit her farm in rural Portugal to follow master classes from Pires and other teachers. Over the years her skeptical attitude towards the concept of art, based on competition, ambition and promotions, with all it’s displays of egocentricity, has led her to create a world in which there is space to develop her own ideas. This film is a portrait of this intimate and secluded place where Pires can live and work according to her own artistic principles. In this sense ‘Discovering Sound ’ is also a portrait of the pianist herself. We learn about her pronounced opinions and views on art and life and how these two are undeniable entwined. Most importantly we experience the ravishing passion with which she teaches and creates.

SOUND ! SING !, DON´T BE AFRAID OF YOUR VOICE, YOUR VOICE IS NICE, I LIKE YOUR VOICE, GO...AND GO...NO STOP...YOU HAVE YOUR SECRET THERE, INSIDE." Pires gives us her secrets, her love, like an invisible saint, like an angel.

Magnifique document.

Watching her play the Shostakovich piece shows she gets it . Its not just quarter notes its a folk rocking rythm insistent ,comical and quasi -sinister carnival fare .If only we ad her in Prokofiev and ligeti this woman has traveled so far .she doesn' t or hasn't recorded a great deal and Ive seen no contemporary music from her .I imagine at the Beethoven competition she had to play someting contemp .I nowknow she can do anything at the piano .Her philosophy is all encompassing .The true celebrities in music are so deep into human experience I dont think any of us can criticize them .They don't even live in the same world. She talks about everyday life ,cleans house is so real and deep I realize the life of a classical musician can be for very few .

What a wonderful Personality: she has understood wisdom practically, the true wisdom of love-sharing, of humility whilst letting one's personality expressing through the music. Take the time to breath in, breath out, move your whole body and sing whilst playing the piano...I would have loved to have Maria Joao Pires as a teacher!

ABsolutely. Every beautiful thing in this world seems to be tainted by competition and ego. I like arts in a broad sense, but I could never gravitate towards artistic environments because from a very early age I could 'sense' this cult of the ego. But art has nothing to do with that, it's jsut became elitist in our world.

Simples a explicação.

That is not correct. Belgais was a private initiative, mostly supported by government fundings, which was disastrously "managed" by Maria João, who then placed her daughter as director - so essentially, a "family business", sponsored by public money. The amount of activities and the target population at Belgais was mediocre at best - too much bla bla bla, very little effective work. When the investment was scrutinized, as any publicly-funded (even partially) institution in Portugal is, gaps were found for the justification of the huge amount of money spent. Then, she acted as victim (when she was actually mocking the system), and went away to Brazil (as any blighter in Portugal used to do in those days). Maria João is an excellent example of a person that has too much talent in her hands, but little moral values in her head. People too often mistake musical talent with personality or character. What she did at Belgais was essentially burglary. And yes, she USED TO be one of the greated pianists - she is no more amidst the world top 10 pianists, so basically she's a good pianist - nothing more than that. As regards her "teaching" (lol)... is all about acting. She could play a decent character at "Gone Girl" or "The Piano Teacher". When that peaceful, magical, lyrical mask felt, shame was all there was to feel; and Brazil was the most convenient place to go. RIP

Musicians as much as they are well taught remain people with a different charakter and soul. As much as a teacher is sharing his work experience with a student, he/she must accepst the human difference, otherwise the students interpretation will not be authentic. Inspiration, yes, but not forcing a copy upon the student.

@@MeMyIdea People are silly. You didn't understand what she said, because you took the sentence totally out of context, not paying attention to what she said before and after that sentence. It makes perfect sense what she said. There is no technique. You want to know how many celebrated guitarrists were nevre formally trained? What "technique" do they have? Classical music is more bound by these dogmas....but the core, still stands. You can learn to play from a totally different place.
