When travelling by bus through Sumatra in 1979 I frequently heard the Indonsian version sund by Victor Wood (himself a Filipino)

Als er iemand nog is hier. Ze heeft het wel meerendeel haar eigen lief gemaakt. Maar het verhaal is wel min of meer hetzelfde. It captures the feeling en het verhaal heel goed. Original story: Het begon met dat het kind geboren werd en dat de ouders enorm blij waren. Ze wisten niet meer wat ze moesten, ze wilden alles aan het kind gunnen. Toen ging het over dat de moeder wakker bleef om melk te geven aan het kind. En in de ochtend het kind in haar armen hield. Ja de moeder was super blij en was er voor het kind. Nu ben je groot en wil je vrij zijn. Maar ze laten je niet zomaar gaan. Maar wat kunnen ze eraan doen? Je veranderde en werd koppig en brutaal. Je denkt niet eens na over wat je ouders voor je deden en nogsteeds doen. Je wilt altijd degene zijn die gelijk hebt en negeert je ouders. Vele dagen gaan voorbij. Je gaat heel vaak uit. Maar dan verwikkel jij jezelf in slechte zaken. En dan ga je eens naar je ouders toe, die huilen van verdriet en je vragen “Mijn kind, waarom doe jij dit?” En dan begin jij plots zelf te huilen. Je hebt spijt. Oh zo veel spijt. Je beseft je dat jij fout zat. Oh zo fout. Je hebt spijt! ________ We hebben in het Filipijns geen zoon dochter hij of zij. Alles is gender neutraal dus het enige wat een beetje lastig was is dat ze zoon en dochter zei. En het verhaal met dochter en gitaar kwamen in the original niet voor. In plaats daarvan ging het over dat het kind problematisch werd door met mensen om te gaan die fout waren. Daarna ging het kind naar de ouders die dus huilden en begon het kind te beseffen dat die fout zat.

1980's while backpacking in Europe, I ended up with a multi-nation group that includes 2 or 3 Dutch. They were sort of interviewing me while on the train from Zurich to Salzburg (I cannot recall another SE Asian backpacking that time so I am some sort of a curiosity) when an instrumental version of Anak was played by someone in the group. The Dutch sang this ... goose bumps.

it still makes me cry ... I don't under this language, but I was a young girl when this came out in the original language which cannot be fully translated correctly.. if you can only understand it as written, you will cry

It’s now how it it in the original Tagalog song. Anak is about a how parents doted to their child from birth to young adulthood. How joyous the parents when the child born, how they tended to his every need, making his milk, playing with spending time with him. Until the child grew up and wants to be free from his parents care, they don’t agree with it but nothing they can do but let him be, he became too confident, so free that he ignores them just for him to do whatever he wants & doesn’t listen to his parents’ advice anymore. Soon after the child lost his way, he was lured to and addicted to bad vices ( drugs). And the first person the child runs to was his mother. In tears she said… “ Son, why have you become like this?” Without realizing the child’s tears run down his eyes, he was remorseful when coz realized he did make a mistake, he was wrong. The last paragraph on repeat saying how the child repents when he realised he did make a mistake or that he was wrong. The song hits different in the original Tagalog lyrics, the words used are just on point.

@@user-HD4891 But they change the entire song’s story. The original message of the song is lost. The song is for the teens or young adults who became arrogant to their parents and eventually lost their ways to bad vices as a result of not listening to their parents’ guidance.

As a (former) Filipino watching and listening to this rendition, makes me feel so proud, happy and excited! I watched that competition in Manila back in 1978 when I was still there and everyone truly thought "Anak" was the run-away winner!! Freddie's delivery that night was epic!! No one knew then Anak will become the hit that it had become! To hear it now 40 odd years later is truly phenomenal!!!

so after i heard this song it kept playing on my mind on several occasions and it forced me to seek and understand the lyrics. It is beautiful in all aspects. And yes Maria, you did it justice singing that for us and i totally got it.

Maria Fiselier is zonder meer de meest veelzijdige zangeres die we in Nederland hebben. Ze stapt in een ander medium wanneer ze songs brengt zoals Anak. Dan versmelt de operadiva in een chansonnière pur sang, iets dat het overgrote deel van de operazangeressen niet vergund is. Dus: we blijven luisteren en huiveren bij haar stem die nog lang moge klinken.

Tranen op mijn wangen, doet mij denken aan het moment van de geboortes van 3 zonen, ' Benjamin ' na een volbrachte zwangerschap dood geboren, ' Delano & Lorenzo ' nu 22 en 18 jaar,. Wauw wat een indrukwekkend lied dat vrijwel alles verteld in mijn ervaring als vader zijnde. Thanks xx

So powerful lyrics message , timeless and superb rendition on Dutch version. Unfortunately this song hit personally Freddie Aguilar in real life her daughter who was once a popular singer became a victim of illegal drugs and they are not into good terms with her father so sad!!!

Anak appears to be a message delivered to a son and daughter. On the other hand, “Cat’s in the cradle” does the same thing, but to the father.
