    I don’t. She had the same choice to be happy that we all have. Why would you give that choice away to someone else to make for you, or even more absurdly, give that choice away to a circumstance. Callas had talent, enjoy it.

    It was Madama Butterfly that made me loving opera some 40 years ago, at that time I knew nothing about opera and I thought it was a ridiculous style of music for old snob people, but I wanted to make a try and I picked up the version with Maria Callas, because it was the only name I knew, and it has changed my life.

    Someone once described this scene to me: on stage the foreground was higher than the background, so when Butterfly and the other geisha were approaching, you could only see the tops of their heads. Finally, you saw Butterfly for the first time as she sang the high Db. I would love it if you would either confirm that this is true or else tell me what the scene was actually like. Thank you.

    Other than the La Scala recording under Von Karajan with Nicolai Gedda as Pinkerton, the only other time Callas sang Butterfly was in a Chicago production in 1954 with Pippo Di Stefano as Pinkerton. I think she received a summons backstage from her former manager Baragozy before the curtain rose. A critic wrote he never wanted to hear Callas Butterfly again he would end up liking this dreadful opera.

    Her Butterfly is and will be by far the best for ever and ever and ever...here we can hear so clearly that she never "sang the voice", like many great singers did, Milanov, Tebaldi, Flagstad, Jessy Norman, Joan Sutherland... Callas, like Malibran or Pauline Viardot Garcia, always sang the music, and sang it all, from contralto to light or dark colloratura. This way of singing finished at the later part of the nineteenth century, when singers became more specialized and we began to have altos, mezzos, soprano spinto, leggiero, dramatico and so on... It seems that when the voice is better placed in a "natural tessitura", they go on longer, but I wonder if it's worth it... Callas sang well for about ten years, if one thinks that she started early in Athens and soon also in Italy. Leontyne Price, whom I also adore, did not sing opera much longer than that, even with a perfectlly placed voice and half a dozen operas on her repertoire...Joan Sutherland does not sound so good after her first ten years of interantional career, although she could hit the e flat on Lucia right up to the end... but her husband had to keep transposing sections for her, because if she had to go up, she could not go down, and vice versa... So, for instance, I Puritani, that is an opera that bellini keeps the soprano on the low register and ocasionally goes up to the top, she soon dropped from her repertoire! So, Callas may have kept her fenomenal voice and technique for less time beacuse of the risks she was never afraid to take to construct a role: here, in Butterfly, we hear three voices: the voice of Amina, for instance, at the begginig, representing the 15 years old, the voice of Aida, in the second act, as the woman who suffers, and the voice of Norma in the final aria, when Butterfly is alone for the first time on the whole opera! And we could keep writing about it for pages, and pages, and every time we hear her sofisticated art, we still find something else. I, personally, think that Butterfly is one of her best achievements on the studio! There are fantastic live performances of other operas also to enjoy, but here she is certainlly at the peak of her art! Great as she was also as Medea, Norma, Aida, Leonora, Carmen, Lady Macbeth (terribly difficult role that we never here sang really well these days), Lucia, Gilda, Tosca, Turandot, and so many others... Bravissima!

  • @kesinskii

    @kesinskii

    Not quite a realistic statement about her vocal life. Her 1959 Lucia with Tagliavini was her best (Conrad L. Osborne, Andrew Porter, Tovey, all thought so too), her 1957 live Un Ballo is superior to all others, including her own studio recording done the previous year. Her studio Rosina clicks in every way that her life performance two years earlier did not. Of course many factors were involved. She could have remained at the top for another twenty years, but she got wildly distracted along the way and her voice punished her. In Butterfly, the way she articulated the text,..Che tua madre... the way the orchestra responded to her like waves in the ocean responding to some goddess of the sea... wow, Puccini is suddenly elevated above Verdi and Wagner.

    It's great to have actual footage, I wish more can be eventually found. However, the high Db in the end of her introduction aria is not in the vocal score. It doesn't make any sense to hold it as the note is the dominant. In fact, it does sound screechy towards the end. Renata Tebaldi sang it the way Puccini wrote it, ending in Gb, the tonic note.

  • @nw6070

    Musically that note and holding on to it while the orchestra resolves is incredibly striking. Labeling notes has no meaning when something intuitively makes sense. I agree towards the end it sounds slightly screechy. There’s another 1955 video in colour where she does the same not and it sounds better with a lovely echo of the note ringing on after.

    @@nw6070 The Db sounds downright screechy, not what Puccini wrote for the soprano. If we are talking about verismo, this here was a modest, humble Butterfly. Tebaldi gets the point across without it. Freni does a diminuendo on the Db, this might be halfway acceptable but again it makes no musical or dramatic sense.
