Maria Callas - La Mamma Morta (Philadelphia - 1993)

Музыка

andrew beckett:
this is my favorite aria. this is maria callas. this is "andrea chenier", umberto giordano.this is madeleine.
she's saying :
how during the french revolution, a mob set fire to her house, and her mother died... saving her. "look, the place that cradled me is burning." can you hear the heartache in her voice? can you feel it, joe? in come the strings, and it changes everything. the music fills with a hope, and that'll change again. listen... listen..."i bring sorrow to those who love me." oh, that single cello! "it was during this sorrow that love came to me." a voice filled with harmony. it says, "live still, i am life. heaven is in your eyes. is everything around you just the blood and mud? i am divine. i am oblivion. i am thegod... that comes down from the heavens, and makes of the earth a heaven. i am love!... i am love."

A masterclass all around but particularly Denzel Washington who with simply facial gestures shows us in that moment that he finds his humanity. Kudos to all.

One of the best scenes in movie history imo. Hanks does the talking here, but for me, it's Washington who makes this work saying nothing, just expressing his face.

All you need: 4 minutes to persuade someone to love Callas and opera. The writing, cinematography, and acting in this clip are as great as anything, but it is Denzel, playing the traditional role of the lady-in-waiting, represents the audience and as a result, he becomes us. As his eyes fill with tears, and the camera closes in on him, he understands, and we understand. How fortunate am I to have seen her in 1966 in her return as Tosca.

During my childhood and youth, I hated operas, but "La Mamma Morta", sung by Maria Callas in Philadephia flashed me totally. I searched for a cd with this aria, listened to it and till now, I love Maria Callas and many, many other operas especially italian and french ones. Such a great movie, too!

God, I loved this scene. How emotionally open Tom is in basically teaching Denzel how to appreciate opera. He doesn’t have to hide his lifestyle, what he loves, who he loves… and Denzel is drinking in the parallels of the opera with this man who has become a very unlikely friend… just beautifully done.

Denzel's acting doesn't get a lot of mention. It takes a lot of spiritual fortitude to look into a camera and reveal things about yourself that others also find.I think all the elements were just right for the scene to work. The use of Callas to underscore the power of the moment is just pure genius.

I thought that very thing when I saw the movie right after it was released. Washington did a spectacular acting job in that scene. Since I initially saw it, I've often wondered how much of it was acting skill, and how much of it was truly from his soul. And yes...who ever had the idea of putting this scene together...with THIS aria...was/is a Genius.

I fully undestand what you are saying, and I emphasize with this kind of human gesture towards another human being, but I also see the role portraied by Tom Hanks as an extremely strong man right until his last breath, who would hate to be "molly-coddled". But I know what you mean, and I am in tears through most of this film every time i see it. I've seen it at least ten times now, and everything just makes for a perfect movie, as if they were created for this very moment in the history of cinema. The music by Neil Young, Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen, Maria Callas that was used in this movie (some created for the film, other just used because it was so fitting), were all chosen with utmost perfection. They hit a nerve in me every time I listen, and every time I hear those songs I recall the same scenes from the movies and tears well up in my eyes. Many actors are underappreciated in this particular film. Especially the role of Denzel Washington, but also the roles of Antonio Banderras as his fiancee, Jason Robards as the cynical lawyer, Mary Steenburgen as opposing counsel, and the tiny but wonderfully cast role by Joanne Woodward as his mother. They all did an amazing job at keeping this movie a masterpiece - as did of course Jonathan Demme who made them perform their very best. Jonathan Demme is truly versatile. Not many years between this and another masterpiece of his in a very different genre: "Silence of the Lambs". But I agree with you - the acting in this movie is so convincing you really feel the emotions of all the actors and you feel how they make you care for these people in need and despair. Well said!

I'm imagining a reverse of this scene. Imagine a movie where Denzel Washington portrays an AIDS patient unfairly terminated from his job and that Tom Hanks plays his attorney. Hanks visited Denzel who is listening to rap. He asks, "Do you know rap?" Hanks says, "I can't say i do." And then Denzel explains each passage to him.

Tom certainly brings out aspects of the character's innocence in this role. Had any other actor been casted it would, like in any work of great art, changed it substantially, to the point of failure. The film is as much about justice and responsibility as it is about AIDS and those stigmatized. In one central scene in the film, the judge dismisses any notion that Hank's character suffers from discrimination while on trial. It is then the judge is reminded that the people present at the trial "don't live in this court room".
