Mares Regulator Guide
In this video, Lake Hickory Scuba Center's co-owner, Bryan Stafford, goes over the entire Mares Regulator Line, that is currently being produced. He discusses both the differences and similarities between each model, and gives a brief description of each model.

Hello jmac9516, the Ruby was a great regulator. I still have service kits for the Nikos. I'm not sure how long Mares will continue to produce parts for it though. They are getting hard to find.

Is the old Orbiter second stage the same as the new XR? Same service kits and interchangeable faceplates?

  • @LakeHickoryScuba

The Orbiter, The Abyss, and The DR from the XR are essentially the same regulator. They all share the same housing and service kit (#46186160), and all 3 have interchangeable face plates. The First Stage is what sets them apart.

you mentioned how several 2nd stages share the same body, but do any share the same service kits? thank you in advance

Yes some of them share the same parts kits. And some just share some of the same parts. An example would be the Mares MV Second Stage and the Instinct Second Stage. They both use the same diaphragm, as does the Prestige and Rover Second Stage.

Seeing how the Rover, Prestige and Carbon share the same body and some of the same parts, how much of a difference is there between how they breath?

  • @LakeHickoryScuba

Between the Rover 15X and the Prestige 15X, they breathe the same, both use the 15X First Stage. The Rover 2S is the least desirable as far as breathing comfort. The Carbon, powered by the 52X First Stage is an excellent breathing regulator.

The bcd type regulator, is that meant to replace the octopus? If not, what is its purpose?

  • @LakeHickoryScuba

It is an integrated second stage built into the low pressure inflator. So in other words, you can breathe from it, and inflate and deflate your BCD with it. It also allows you to eliminate an extra hose, getting rid of some extra weight, and making it easier to store your regulator.

I personally don't use the integrated models like this. But inflating and deflating remains the same, simply push the buttons. In oral inflation, the benefit is you do not have to remove the regulator from your mouth during breaths. Looking at a computer is as simple as looking at the computer.

Not quite sure why you can't look at a wrist mounted computer while while maintaining buoyancy. You will need to explain that one to me.

Hi, I just came from a scuba store and they told me they are about to sell the mares 72x, do you know anything about it? Thanks in advance

Sorry for not replying sooner, I have been off for a few days. The 72X and its big brother the 75X, are Mares response to the market who complained about the 25X not being Single Tank Friendly. What I mean by this is, when Mares came out with the XR 25X First stage, it only had 3 available ports on the first stage, and they were all located on one side of the first stage. This worked great if you were diving doubles or sidemount, but caused a ton of issues if you decided you wanted to use the same regulator for Single Tank Back Mount. There simply wasn't enough low pressure ports for a diver to mount all the hoses they needed. So Mares developed the XR 75X (Tech version) and the 72X (Recreational version). They are now marketing them both as an ultimate choice for both technical and recreational divers. This gives the divers plenty of options for hose routing, with plenty of low pressure ports and high pressure ports. They also have the 82X, which is a swivel turret style first stage. All of these can be paired with any second stage.

Why is so little spoken of the Ruby system?

Hello jmac9516, the Mares Ruby has been discontinued for years and is no longer serviceable, simply because they are no longer producing parts for it. It was a great regulator back in the day.

    DR 75XR

Hello Dive Addict, the DR 75XR was developed to solve the issue the 25 XR presented. The 25XR was designed specifically for Sidemount or Doubles and was not really considered for single tank use, unless you use a H or Y Valve. The 75X added additional ports for single tank use.
