Marcus Garvey - Rare 1921 Recording

Фильм және анимация

Explanation of the Objects of the Universal Negro Improvement Association" is a studio recording made by African-American leader Marcus Garvey in New York in July 1921, and adapted from his longer speech "A Membership Appeal from Marcus Garvey to the Negro Citizens of New York
*****
Jamaica’s first National Hero was born in St. Ann’s Bay, St. Ann, on August 17, 1887.
He was conferred with the Order of the National Hero in 1969 as per the second schedule of the National Honours and Awards Act.
In his youth Garvey migrated to Kingston, where he worked as a printer and later published a small paper “The Watchman”.
During his career Garvey travelled extensively throughout many countries, observing the poor working and living conditions of black people.
In 1914 he started the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), in Jamaica. The UNIA, which grew into an international organisation, encouraged self-government for black people worldwide; self-help economic projects and protest against racial discrimination.
In 1916, Garvey went to the USA where he preached his doctrine of freedom to the oppressed blacks throughout the country.
However, USA officials disapproved of his activities and he was imprisoned, then deported.
Back in Jamaica in 1927, he continued his political activity, forming the People’s Political Party in 1929. He was unsuccessful in national elections but won a seat on the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC).
But the world of the 1930s was not ready for Garvey’s progressive ideas. He left Jamaica again, this time for England where he died in 1940. His body was brought back to Jamaica in 1964 and buried in the National Heroes Park in Kingston.
Garvey’s legacy can be summed up in the philosophy he taught - race pride, the need for African unity; self-reliance; the need for black people to be organised and for rulers to govern on behalf of the working classes.

If we are literally you then how is us squabbling over land in Africa any different from any of your inter tribal conflicts? The “colonisers” were just another displaced African tribe! Mr. Donald Williams - Spoken Word Artist It does belong to us. Based on your reasoning your people would be entitled to the entire world. I think you’re still arguing with people from hundreds of years ago. We just want to be left alone nowadays. I’d be genuinely happy to see you guys make a success of Africa. As for Europe I’m not averse to other races living here in limited numbers as it was in past times. I just want a supermajority of my own people. Europe should allow the Boer to claim refugee status and return to their home. It’s not going to end well for them over there.

I recommend this book because Life And Lessons gives you in his own words his first encounter with deception and break down of what happened to the UNIA's Black Star Line. 👑🙏🏾 This man was a genius

I'm glad you post this and give you much respect for doing your research for posting a real recording of Garvey. There is a fake recording of a supposed Garvey speech circulating online that purports to be Garvey speaking in front of a live audience, but the technology for clear live recordings did not yet exist, and it's actually by an actor. Garvey only made two recordings and this was one of them, made after he returned to the USA in 1921.

@@IceManLikeGervin Dialect means "a particular form of a language which is peculiar to a specific region or social group". That's the official definition and that is how most persons who know the actual meaning of the word would and should interpret it. Defending the right to ensure language and perspectives are decolonised is not "wetting myself" as you so patronisingly put it. Across the African diaspora and within Africa itself, the idea of what languages, accents and expressions are acceptable are still based on a European aesthetics. We as black people internalise these racialised notions and practise them- knowingly and unknowingly - even the most black conscious among us.

Because Garvey died in 1940 (when Jamaica was then a British colony). 22 years later Jamaica became an independent nation. It was Edward Seaga who suggested the idea that Garvey be reinterred in Jamaica and be named the island's first national heroe. We need to populate LA,MS, AL, & GA AND whatever select locations in Africa. We built America we are indigenous to America and we are never leaving America.
