Marcus Garvey Inspired Millions, from MLK to Mandela; Now His Son Is Asking Obama to Pardon Him

democracynow.org - Today we look at another request for a presidential pardon, this one from the family of Marcus Garvey, a pioneering figure in the Black Freedom struggle in the early 20th century who inspired generations of civil rights activists around the world. In the 1920s, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover targeted Garvey for his political activity as a leader of the Pan-African movement. Garvey was convicted in 1923 on a charge of mail fraud and sentenced to five years in jail. His charges and conviction effectively ended Garvey’s political movement and eventually led to his deportation back to Jamaica. We speak to Marcus Garvey’s son, Dr. Julius Garvey, who is leading the Justice4Garvey effort.

Do not seek a pardon for Garvey. That would mean he is confessing to guilt. Rather, the charges must be expunged and his imprisonment must be repaired.

Sir you are ignorant of the history of Marcus Garvey. He started his work in Jamaica fighting oppression, colonialism, economic exploitation. He started a political party and a trade union. He constantly agitated for his people. He soon extended his work to the West Indies and Central America. On deportation he worked tirelessly for the poor and disenfranchised people of Jamaica and black people of the world. Obama did not pardon Garvey because of his cowardice and because he is not a black man. He is a solid member of the establishment and the wealthy elite.

J Edgar Hoover was a man of color or colour if you have a British background. Because he could pass for white he did. That is why,I believe, he especially treated Murcus Garvey and other black people harshly as he certainly didn't want to be outed as black. I have more European blood than African and can certainly pass as white but I don't but I wonder to myself if I had been around (even though I'm 66)in earlier times would I have passed as a matter of survival.
