Top Quotes From Meditations By Marcus Aurelius | Philosophy Of Stoicism | Animated Book Summary
Get this book in paper, audiobook, or PDF by clicking here: amzn.to/1L7etVS
Marcus Aurelius was the emperor of Rome and the most powerful man in the world. Meditations is an inside look at what someone with infinite power who practices the Stoic Philosophy thinks about.
This book was never planned to be released. When Marcus wrote it he was just looking to record his thoughts on what he needs to work on himself.
Some quotes that don't quite make the cut but are invaluable anyway:
“A healthy pair of eyes should see everything that can be seen and not say, “No! Too bright!”
A healthy sense of hearing or smell should be prepared for any sound or scent; a healthy stomach should have the same reaction to all foods, as a mill to what it grinds.
A healthy mind should be prepared for anything. The one that keeps saying, “Are my children all right?” or “Everyone must approve of me” is like eyes that can only stand pale colors, or teeth that can handle only mush.”
“The first step: Don’t be anxious. Nature controls it all. And before long you’ll be no one, nowhere - Like Hadrian, like Augustus.
The second step: Concentrate on what you have to do. Fix your eyes on it. Remind yourself that your task is to be a good human being; remind yourself what nature demands of people. Then do it, without hesitation, and speak the truth as you see it. But with Kindness. With humility. Without hypocrisy.”
“When you have trouble getting out of bed in the morning, remember that your defining characteristic - what defines a human being - is to work with others. Even animals know how to sleep. And it’s the characteristic activity that’s the more natural one - more innate and more satisfying.”
“Give yourself a gift: the present moment.
People out for posthumous fame forget that the Generations To Come will be the same annoying people they know now. And just as mortal. What does it matter to you if they say x about you, or think y?”
“The cucumber is bitter? Then throw it out.
There are brambles in the path? Then go around them.
That’s all you need to know. Nothing more. Don’t demand to know “why such things exist.””
“You want praise from people who kick themselves very fifteen minutes, the approval of people who despise themselves. (Is it a sign of self-respect to regret nearly everything you do?)”
“If we want to follow nature, to be of one mind with it, we need to share its indifference. To privilege pleasure over pain - life over death, fame over anonymity - is clearly blasphemous. Nature certainly doesn’t.”
“Objective judgment, now, at this very moment.
Unselfish action, now, at this very moment.
Willing acceptance - now, at this very moment - of all external events.
That’s all you need.”
“Everything that happens is either endurable or not.
If it’s endurable, then endure it. Stop complaining.
If it’s unendurable … then stop complaining. Your destruction will mean its end as well.
Just remember: you can endure anything your mind can make endurable, by treating it as in your interest to do so.
In your interest, or in your nature.”

He who does not know what the world is does not know where he is. And he who does not know for what purpose the world exists, does not know who he is, or what the world is. But he who has failed in any one of these things could not even say for what purpose he exists himself.

Crazy how he doesn't mention the turmoil his empire is experiencing anywhere in the book eh? He's just focused on how to carry himself to be a proper leader. You don't find out until you do some research that he had a rough reign filled with war and disease.

Besides that, just general development books: The Charisma Myth, Olivia Fox Cabane The Compound Effect, Darren Hardy Models, Mark Manson The Narrow Road, Felix Dennis War of Art, Steven Pressfield Then grab the biographies of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rockefeller, Roosevelt, Steve Jobs, Benjamin Franklin, and Nelson Mandela. Should get you off on the right foot.

Interesting question, about a statement within the video - one which seems rather vacuous and senseless: 'Always look at your own dumb decisions before judging others.' Why? Is it necessary to evalute ones self first? If so, why? Provided one has the knowledge and is enlightened or educated enough to be able to impart objective criticism and positive advice against a negative action or thought process, isn't that the necessary criteria one needs? I cannot understand how interrogating your own life first better qualifies you to judge the actions and thoughts of others. I can see how practicing what you preach may remove you from the spotlight of hypocrisy, but I cannot see how one must have turned their thoughts on themselves FIRST. It is something that, if we learn to practice and harness that should come naturally when we look at ourselves, but I think being able to look at yourself in a critica light is a completely separate skill than this stoic approach to the world. The principle and the practice that is. But either way great video, much appreciated.

  • @JeffreyMarr

    @JeffreyMarr

    7 жыл бұрын

Pretty much, whenever you look at the actions of another person, ask yourself why they are doing that. If someone is freaking out in public, it never hurts to ask: "What's going on in their mind to make them act like that". Instead of just calling them immature and thinking about how much better you are than them. But starting with yourself, it helps you if you ask: Hey, why am I judging others? Look at all the dumb shit I do. Then catch yourself when you're doing somethng. For example, you're slacking at work. Ask yourself 'why'. It doesn't help you judge others when you know why you do stuff. However, it does help you to not judge others when you know why they are doing whatever they're doing. As well as when you know that you're no where near perfect.

The Quran states that no-one could produce work like the Quran itself and it must be divinely inspired. 'Meditations' had already been written and is much better. There is an eerie line in the Quran however, it states that "judgement day will be so terrifying, that childrens' hair will turn grey."

As you (may) know, stress can cause premature greying of the hair. It signifies the utter horror of the day, the instant decrepitude of humans before God, as we wither before his wrath. It's a great line and credit where it is due. The Four horsemen of the apocalypse is a supreme image though. I think there was a fifth one, like a fifth Beatle, but he was sacked and got a job at the gas board.

Effective but definitely not the word of god. Its about power. Power over women, power over other people , power to take what you have not worked for. Exploitation of the warrior class is ISIS.

Great summary and explanations. Yet, as many others have commented the comparison to Obama doesn't really do the philosophy of stoicism justice. Also, your animations depict all bad/negative characters as individuals of color (based on the skin tones you chose) and all good/positive characters as individuals of pale and light skin. This is the first video I watch in your channel and I see you have a range of other topics you cover, giving me the impression that you are a man of knowledge. Thus, I really wonder if your depiction of good and bad individuals as white and black was purposefully intended or a representation of your subconscious subtle/covert racism and social darwinism ideologies?

  • @JeffreyMarr

PABLO OLIVA the Obama comparison was nothing to do with Stoicism. Marcus Aurelius was the emperor of Rome, the most powerful nation at the time. Barack Obama was the president of the United States, the most powerful country at the time. I am saying Meditations is the personal diary of the leader of the most powerful nation at the time. Which would be equivalent to finding Obama diary. Do you disagree with this? As for showing negative aspects as minorities and positive aspects as white and pale people, no, this is not conscious. I will have to rewatch the video but it is entirely a coincidence. At least I hope so, I don't feel racist in any way :O

Between The Lines It is just rediculous to compare such a great and wise man to Obama. In the nearly 2000 years since the reign of Aurelius you could have picked an easily recognizable leader to use for your illustration yet you picked a leader that has done nothing remarkable. What wisdom has Obama given us that will last the test of time? What great trials and tribulations has Obama endured during his leadership besides improving his golf game and figuring out which celebrity to hang out with for a photo op?

Between The Lines To think about it and to live it are very different things mate...I am living it and I dont find myself having to stop and focus on my thoughts when confronted with minor problems that in the past, would have me over analyzing every facet of perceived negative thought and or feeling. I live with depression and anxiety like millions of others at this point in time and have found the majority that have either accepted it and gave in to alcohol or pharmaceutical (illegal pharma) or do get on with one day at a time. Stoicism offers control...or at least a feeling of it and it provides relief.

between the lines: if you think Obama was a success in his 8 years and Trump is a failure in his 3 months then that really shows your logical and unbiased opinion. why if your going to do a video on Marcus Aurelius who thought, taught and philosophized about how individuals can be happy and great achievers if they trusted and believed in there own ability's, then why compare him to a modern-day politician? that is the exact opposite of what a politicians believes about the people they pretend to "represent". Marcus also decided on his own that ruling over a nation and millions of people was a huge responsibility and decided on his own that the people would be better served by having 2 leaders and appointed a 2nd leader for checks and balances. Sir we get it, you wanted to let us all know who your favorite player is it just wasn't a equivalent comparison. it took some credibility away from my trusting that you know what your talking about that's all. P.S I would have wrote this if you would have compared him to Trump to, it's not about party for me it is about facts and neither party believes that we the people can achieve or gain success and happiness on are own.

Mike Barrios lol. Look when this video was made. Trump hadn't even decided to run at the time I don't think. The comparison is Marcus Aurelius was in charge of the greatest super power in the world at the time. And comparing him to Obama was because Obama was in charge of the greatest super power in the world at the time this video was made. That is 100% what I was implying. There's no hidden meaning behind who I support in terms of president. I'm from Canada lol
