Ah yes, this prelude is one of my favorites and is the only one so far that I've tried to arrange. I've been trying to arrange this one for orchestra as that seems most appropriate.

Rachmaninoff’s solo piano works always seem (to me, at least) to be transcribing an orchestral work that’s playing around in his mind. Same goes for Chopin.

I have recently found my way to this channel - so glad that I did!

His piano concerto No 2 is absolutely amazing beautiful, I true master of emotions. I enjoy listen to your analyzes.

Fantastic! I just recently discovered your channel, as it seems to be fairly new, but it’s so good! Finally a channel that does high-quality analysis in an enjoyable format. All other channels I know only cover the most surface-level aspects of a piece and shy away from real harmonic and counterpuntal analysis, or are simply videos of college lectures where often the music isn't even played and no visual aids are given. Of those that do, all channels i know seem to have given up after only one or two videos, and all of those are limited to Bach. Your videos are truly a godsend. Do you take requests for pieces to analyze in the future? Perhaps as a patreon reward? There is some extremely unknown repertoire that, judging from your current videos, I feel you’d enjoy a lot and that I think would make for some fascinating analysis.

Thanks for the tip! That's interesting music, as you say one can hear all sorts of influences but it's still original. Maybe pushing the chromaticism slightly too much for my taste actually, so I liked the first piece. But it's great to know about, and I will check him out some more definately!

This piece always put me in mind of 30's Errol Fynn movies, such as the classic 1938 Robin Hood. Great analysis.

Thanks, welcome to the channel! :) Yes, I can really recommend two channels: - "Sticky notes" podcast for listening guides like mine for symphonic repertoire - "Inside the score" youtube channel, great series on Beethoven symphonies and some other format content about mostly symphonic classical music.

You can play the “accompaniment” softer to differentiate it from the melody.

Thank you so much! Some additional things I found. In the coda near the end, the base line bE D G resembles the open chords of his prelude in c# minor. And after that in the ending march, I really really like the augmented sixth!

Well, if you learn it once and return later, it may take a while but something is still there and will return, is my experience.

Thank you for this in-depth and helpful tutorial, especially from a musical point of view. It has made me make progress on the piece (with which I have been struggling for months now..I find it difficult. I have a question though: what piano are you playing on?). I have a 1926 Schmidt Flohr concert upright and yours sounds quite like it.

Well, I practice for a long time before recording, it's just that I always have several pieces going on at the same time. For example now I started all these Rach after new years, together with another project which will come next. And almost all pieces I do here I have learned over the last 10 years or so, so they are not really new (although this particular was like 15 years ago so it felt new).

I love, love, love the Marching Menace! I terrorized my family while conquering it for my final recital ever-9th grade. Now 68 I will have a piano and play it again. The challenge will be a slower left hand, getting the fingering right.

I must add the piece needed attacking in the Marching sequence. My long fingers were somewhat of an embarrassment for a girl in my time, 1970- 1971, who was in love with Rachmaninoff.

WOW! I (casual musician) somehow came here out of nothing... I always enjoyed that prelude but now I'm shivering a bit. Rachmaninov is such a Genius! The last moment I had like this was seeing the score of Schuberts "Der Tod und das Mädchen"... Just recognizing how unbelievably good those guys were.... People should learn about that before calling some pop musician a Genius. You, Sir, are amazing. Thank you for opening the door to pieces I will never be able to play in my life and therefore I can stand wondering like child and that is how we should perceive art.

Thanks for the showing the progression of the music. You said several times you are playing it as you like it and not necessarily as it was written. That is fine. In fact, the score does not show all the elements that Rachmaninoff was doing. I had the good fortune to have Mme Gina Bachauer take me through this piece, much as you did here. She showed me how he played it & what he expected. Her instruction was quite different from your realization. She was a pupil of his. Good thing great music survives, despite what we may do to it.

At 6:26 would be a G >harmonic< minor because of the Eb.

This is the third piece I ever learned, after about three months of active piano playing. I practiced at school since I didn’t have my own piano and in class. At the beginning the music students that were in my class told me to quit piano right away. Turns out they were crying because I did something that took them years to live up to. I’m both proud and sad It’s a very good, not too hard piece to learn arpeggios and jumps in. Helps me still in my playing of for example Scriabin. Idk if I should go to a conservatory tbh. My uncle who is particularly gifted says that if I practice a few more months they’ll take me here in Belgium, but idk

Great analysis! I have been learning this for about five years! This will really help memorising it - which is the only way I will ever get to play this accurately. One point - you didn’t emphasise the inner voices in the middle section as much as other pianists. So I am going to copy you as these few bars are so difficult to execute if you really make the inner voice dominant.

As I commented on Kassia's version of this piece, my neighbor the Opera singer often plays this in the morning and I didn't know it's name until I randomly found her video and recognised the melody!

SUCH an amazing, unique, and brilliant piece... and difficult. I’ve been working on it for months. Am I the only one who hears an element of camp in it? Like I could almost picture drag queens and buff Russian soldiers dancing up and down the steps of the Kremlin to this piece, if it could make a face it would be scowling but trying to hide a smile

One of my favourite Rachmaninov pieces, and quite a challenge to play. Just a wrong note at ~12:28 -- should be a D# in the right hand. It makes such a difference to the melodic bittersweet feel of the end of the middle passage!

Yes, you're right I play wrong there. I think I saw the tied over note in the next bar and thought it was a D at some point (where it fits better with the harmony), and then just didn't register that it's actually, obviously a D#. Thanks for pointing it out!

That augmented chord you mention around 3:05 doesn't exist its a bass note that inverts the previous 5 chord moving to the bass note of the following i6 chord that's in first inversion.

Brilliant analysis on what is probably the most Rachmaninoff sounding prelude!. ..btw any thoughts on videos about later Rachmaninoff, like the etude tableaux? I love the gradual chromaticizing of the tonal fabric in those pieces and his use of harmony in the later works is an interesting stylistic change, it would be nice to see analysis about that.
