Marcel Proust: A Writer's Life - Documentary Clip
This engrossing documentary traces the life of French writer Marcel Proust, considered by many to be the greatest novelist of the 20th century. Filmed on location in France, the film depicts Proust's struggle to create his 3,000-page masterpiece, "Remembrance of Things Past", the groundbreaking novel that has come to epitomize a genre. With dramatic re-enactments of key scenes from Proust's life, and with rare archival footage that brings to life the rich period of French history from 1870 to 1925, A WRITER'S LIFE shows how, after years of failure and bad luck, Proust finally found the key to his art - and the will to undertake what is perhaps the most ambitious novel ever conceived.

I love Shelby Foote! Brilliant!!
Marcel Proust: "What a horrible life, I'm the living dead." (Proust's life for most of his later years). The guy was a big socialite with rich parents, who decided one day to retreat into a small apartment, line all the walls with corkboard to make it sound proof, and write his book. He was also obsessed with the town of Combray and the "Guermantes Way", some trail that meanders through the same village! Guy was obsessed with locales. But he was probably the first vocal supporter of refrigerated water, with his beautiful descriptions of a glass jar thrown into a stream, and his desire to drink the liquid rushing inside it, which was to him a very desirable refigerated cold beverage.
I used to own the complete documentary, from which this clip is taken, on VHS. I wish I could find it on DVD.
Too true. Like Shakespeare. His characters are various comical and monstrous but always fully human refracted through a great genius
He is a genius... But reading him is hard work
