Marc Ellis on life after SportsCafe, Charlie's millions and Ridgey
Спорт
On this episode of Between Two Beers, we talk to Marc Ellis.
Marc has done enough in his life to have an episode dedicated to each chapter.
He played rugby for Otago, North Harbour, Blues, Highlanders and All Blacks and League for the Warriors and Kiwis, founded Charlie’s juice company - which after 10 years he sold to Asahi for $129 million, and was one of New Zealand’s top television stars for over a decade.
In this episode we talk about what it was like to walk away with $18 million after selling Charlie’s - and why he decided to keep working, the best stories from university in Dunedin and touring with the All Blacks, why he thinks he was poisoned before the 1995 Rugby World Cup final, the time he was nearly killed by a bowling machine, the glory days with Ridgey, his favourite moments from Sports Café, what he’s doing now and much much more.
Marc was our dream guest - and he delivered. Seamus and I grew up watching his unpredictable brand of hijinx and gags on TV, and his infectiously positive and fun personality rubbed off on us both. But behind the laughs and wild stories is an incredibly driven, successful, thoughtful guy and we had so much fun working through his full story. You'll love this one.

One year on and it’s still a good podcast with Marc Ellis
Marc Ellis is what you call a true blue kiwi. Great sense of humour, hard worker, great family man, good values, just a great human being.

Marc what a bloody legend, best 90mins I have listened to in a long time.
I was in the Otago team when Marc made his debut, his attitude to rugby was brilliant, a great team man and a real scarfie, Loved his few beers and his mates, and played rugby with such talent and the freedom just to enjoy the game. The likes of Marc, JT (John Timu) and JL (John Leslie) were a band of brothers on and off the field. Great fun, always followed his career, and his shows. Loved this reminder. Great to see you Marc

Mr Pope. you were pretty awesome to mate, the Otago Teams in those days were a joy to follow, Carisbrooke was our 2nd home watching you guys..Great episode and forgot how funny Marc and all the stories about the scarfie days,,,we were locals at time but all our friends at Otago Uni always invited us to the best parties and throw in the Garden Tavern & The Cook & Oriental and that place rocked..Really Enjoy Marc Ellis reminiscing...so enjoyable..
Marc reminiscing about Otago is exactly like myself and mates…attempting to contain the laughter when regaling people with tales of old is almost impossible. Some of the best years of my life
He was always going to be successful. Anyone who lived in Dunedin in the 90s knows he was a lot more than just a rugby player. Unquestionably the king of scarfies!
Best watch in years, thanks guys!
Well done boyz, great show and good to see Ellis looking so young and still a mischief bugger! Been living all over the world for the last 30 years and awesome to see NZ has still got that heart and soul I've been missing for so long. I've never been homesick but dam you guys as well as Marc have made me make plans to finally go home. That last quote at the end got me man!
Marc is the man who would bring all the good of us kiwis to the surface
Awesome, grew up living to watch sportscafe/game 2 halves. Marc your the last of a great era!
Bloody hell he so correct in what he says of/to Bob Jones at the very end! NZ needs more people like you Marc.....Power of love over a love of power you are!
Absolute legend of NZ. Done it all and still one of the most humble and down to earth men around. Thank you for everything Marc ❤️

What a bloke his humility and humbleness. Top pod boys. All the best
Great episode, lads! Marc is the man! But, one of yaz shoulda bloody got up and got the extra beer for the old fella and his crook knee! lol
When I think of Marc Ellis I think if a hardcase dude who was mean at Sport & loved to have a good laugh. So much depth to who he is & someone I imagine a lot of people misunderstand. What an awesome listen & I think more would tune in to Macca & Ridgey in their 60s still trying to beat each other. 😂
Wow lads bloody top show brought back some great memories...l would love to go back to those days good times. Well done team and congrats to you maca!!!!
I hope Mark and Matthew do make more series together.
that last bit talking about bob, i've seen the love and family side of things in the maori community in the early days and you can't beat it, it was lost for a generation but I hope it comes back because it will save nz from the rest of the world, community is the most important thing for us today
Just stumbled across this. Awesome poddy. Im 39 and loved this guy growing up.
Great Video, Mark and et and others, thanks for sharing, thanks for sharing
What an absolute legend. So humble. Great interview guys.
Absolute legend of a guy , used to love watching him on TV really funny guy
Yeah Marc is Right The 90s thru to 2000s were an amazing Time in NPC Rugby and in Social Times in General Top Poddy Lads
What a fantastic episode. Love the way you guys structured the conversation and did your research to bring up different stories. Awesome to hear Marc share stories, one of the best story tellers out there. Things I’ve taken away and looking to implement are getting into the story and really sharing it like you were there, discipline and having a structured early wake up time, dreaming big as, and doing more fun things that don’t harm anyone. Looking forward to seeing what the future holds for between two beers, you guys are going from strength to strength.
I could listen to Marc for days. Man's a true blue Kiwi.
Absolutely worth watching, level headed knowledge, thank you for sharing
One of the best to ever live. Very cool walk back to the good ol days. Cheers lads
Heath Davis and Israel Dagg were the fastest bowlers in New Zealand
Great podcast, enlightened and some very good heart to heart advice during the session along with good humour. 😎
Reminded me of the sports Cafe days
Big fan of the podcast, and it’s cool to see these videos too. I wonder if it’s possible to order the ‘screens’ so that when the guests are looking at each of you, it’s reflected on screen? Currently if Marc is looking at Seamus, on screen it looks like he’s looking at Steven (and visa versa).
Great interview. Marc's old biography "Crossing The Line" is worth a look if you've never read it before.
I went to sleep to this last night lol 🤣
What an inspiring "dude". Love it!
Loved watchn this fulla growing up.awesome player and a funny hua at the same time🤙
Fk, what an awesome podcast. Cheers, brothers
Legend.
Great!
Brilliant!
Great watch
Epic! Again!.
What a awesome Poddy lads...
That was fun to watch, brought back good memories. Loved “Sports Cafe” back in the day. I’ve been away from NZ for nearly 20 years but remember Ellis being a huge personality and a top sportsman back then and he represented a fun side of sports and friendships. Was always kind of curious where Marc ended up? Actually thought he probably crashed and burned into obscurity. Lol! It’s very pleasing to see he’s enjoying success and fulfilment in his life. Couldn’t have happened to a better bloke.🍺
Great show. You guys need to swap places so the guest eye contact is in sink
The man 🎉
40:40 👏👏
Gees he looks good for early 50s fair play
Marc Ellis was my fourth-form prefect at Wellington College. Everyone knew he was going to be a star! Our form teacher that year was the 1st XV coach. He introduced him to the class as "Future All Black Mark Ellis." He was funny and witty and one in a generation of pure, natural, and gifted athletes! I remember him crunching some poor fella in a 1st XV game against a club team. We played club teams (WRFC Under 19 grade) back in those days.

I went to school with him too. The general consensus was he was the most coordinated person anyone ever had seen. Cricket rugby and any sport
He was at Ariana hall at Otago I think he was in Skinner house
100% on the Gaurdies, hasnt been the same since.

My old man ended up with the america true security contract after the previous one's were fired

He looks to be replying to the wrong dude. Sort that out!
Tu meke Mark Ellis.
Generous Fella Mark.
Marc is wrong about money not buying happiness. If you dont have money, you have worries, you have stress. With money, those particular stresses go away. Unless you make shitty choices, that is. But if you have money and are good at using it to make your life happy, it will be. Its a luxury that a lot of people simply dont have access to.

Agreed. Everyone with money says that. Lets see their happiness diminesh with a 9-5 bussing to work and struggling to pay rent and food 🤔
Let’s hope we can steer our kids away from he woke bs path and onto what real kiwis are.
Crikeys Mark, youre looking more and more like Jeffery Epstein hehe... just kidding
