Thanks for the video Ben. I really enjoy seeing your journey as I see similarities in mine. I'm preparing for marathon number 1 in a few weeks but I've only been running "seriously" for this year. As I keep pushing myself and training harder I see myself improving and have no idea what the limit could be. Continue to talk about low 2 hour marathons, comm games and whatever else. I'm just hoping to finish my first one and then who knows what the future could hold.

Ha, it's great to see so many people getting into running and following the advice
Hey Ben. I'm really enjoying the channel and your story of the journey to the Valencia 225 (had a great run there myself in 2013). It is good to know that you were once "normal" and you've reached these dizzy heights with a hell of a lot of hard work. You've obviously got more natural talent for distance running than your average person but it is quite motivational seeing what you're up to. I, like many have my own story of weight loss and improving a bit although I have found it hard to move up to the next level in terms of training volume and those quality sessions. Time through work/personal life and just the body feeling like it can't take the abuse mean I'm about 10% down on training from a few years ago and I feel unable to peak beyond 65 miles a week. I'm having an OK year for shorter distance races and trying to raise confidence for Budapest and Malaga this Autumn. I'll keep watching for tips and inspiration. Take care.
Great questions and answers, Ben. Thx
Keep the good work on! Love your channel. Something me is interesting - How much of your training are you doing on the bike (in winter/summer)?
Thanks for the content Ben and the recent Q+A session which was really interesting. I’m new to running but watched my fair share of trainer reviews and running vlogs. I frequently hear people describe a trainer “as a fast shoe” or one that “doesn’t like slow pace/easy run” - when people say that do they mean absolute speed or relative to someone ability?
Great video - good luck Ben!
Really nice Video. I hope the next episode won’t take a few days 😊 greetings from Germany

Great Video, Ben!
Hi Ben, more great content, thanks! Regarding shoe mileage, how do you decide when to retire a pair? What are the signs that finally consign a pair to the dustbin? Given the cost it’s tempting to keep going for maybe longer than you should - I’ve got a pair of trail shoes that still look ok after more than 1000km but surely they must have had it!
@BenParkes
5 жыл бұрын
The general mark that a lot of companies put out there is 400-500km.. but that's just because they want you to buy more and more shoes!! For me I just look at the wear on the sole of the trainers and you can see how worn down they are. That's harder with trail shoes, as they have deeper lugs generally so it isn't quite as obvious. There's no easy answer.. I'd say that after 1000k of trails then those shoes are probably due to be changed through!
Ben, great video, thanks! How are you doing the sizing/fitting of your running shoes?
So for your next Q&A... Are your zones based on the standard HR zones (90%-100% z5, 80%-90% z4, etc...)? Great video.
@BenParkes
5 жыл бұрын
Hey.. in S3E1 I explain how I got my heart rate zones calculated in the lab. So it was all custom done for me!
Such a great guy⭐️🏃♂️
late question Ben but am after your opinion on treadmill running and how it transfers to the road. I generally have the incline at 1% and for eg 1km efforts will be set 5 second faster per/min to reflect the difference between road running
please go for berlin marathon, much better atmosphere
I did Berlin last year and got my PB of 2:53. I'm doing Frankfurt this year and also Valencia in December. Hoping to break 2:50
You made that look easy, my favourite is 10k but definitely the hardest to pace correctly
I agree with the other guys' and girls' comments and I wish you all the best. :)
Hi Ben 🖐🏻 is it possible that you will make a video about:👆🏻1. how proper Running should look like ✌🏼. what could i do to run with more effort and more body tension? 🤟🏼3. This should be in your Training that you will get faster and easier while running (for example running a 5.30 m/km it feels hard to get to a easy 5 m/km )🐌 😁 that would be great 💥
How often do you incorporate cross training? (not strength training), but swimming /cycling or other forms of cardio?
@BenParkes
5 жыл бұрын
Personally I don't do any at the moment. It's all running. If I do get an injury that stops me running for a small amount of time then I have a bike in the flat that I can use. The bike is usually the first thing I do, if I need to cross train, as I'm really bad at swimming.

Great video Ben! I’m running the SDW50 next year, any training/course tips you can offer me as a Centurion champ!
@BenParkes
5 жыл бұрын
I ran the course in training (two separate runs) and felt that really helped me on the day.. knowing exactly what is coming up. Plus most of the aid stations are at the bottom of climbs.. so grab things quickly and then walk with it.. as most of the field will be power walking up the climbs after aid stations, so you can walk and eat! Good luck!
Awesome stuff mate, I run cause i like who it makes me
About the strength training: I'm actually pretty sure that atleast Ethiopian endurance runners include strength workouts to their training. I believe that they mainly tend to focus on improving their core strength.
@BenParkes
5 жыл бұрын
Yeah.. I didn't phrase it that well in the video, as meant to say they do some.. but probably not as much as people think they do. Most of it comes from drills and running from what I can see!

I got really into to the running one year ago, thanks to youtube, and runned my first maraton 3 months ago. The marathon time was great 3.28 but I pushed myself over the limit and had some heart problems during the race. Now trying to get slowly back to running. Not sure what goal should I set next. If I would be smart I should propably try to run the next marathon 3:30 and feel great after running it... It's just so addictive to chase the faster time. Thanks and greetings from Finland!
@BenParkes
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Hugo! Hope all is well in Finland. I hope to visit some day soon! A lot of people do go chasing faster and faster times, but it doesn't suit everyone. I like to run a few races slower and just enjoy them. Only you can decide what you want to do, but there running sure is lots of fun when you can run a bit slower, interact with the crowd, take in all the scenery and enjoy it!!
Berlin, I'll cheer for you!
I started running about the time you got serious. Used to hate running and never did it. Signed up to do a charity 10k in late 2017. Just started doing speed training this year in Feb. Looking to break 3 at Amsterdam in October, grinding out 80k week right now.
With your positive energy, you're fueling a growing number of runners every day! Super job, man, keep on doing this! Unfortunately I can't run now because I have plantar fasciitis. What runners injuries did you have, and how did you deal with them?
@djc0108
5 жыл бұрын
I’m making slow progress getting over plantar fasciitis and it has been a complete pain in the ass !! After trialling numerous things the two best things that have helped me are as follows : - Doing a 3 minutes heel drop on the stairs or a step three times a day. Balance on your toes, lower your heel and when you feel the stretch hold it for 3 minutes x 3 times a day. Well worth the time spent doing this in reducing symptoms of plantar fasciitis. - Check out Plantar Fasciitis compresssion sleeves on amazon....compression sleeves that just cover your foot - helps especially if you have difficulty walking after a night’s sleep. Hope that helps, things are improving for me so there is hope with it. 👍👍👍

Ben Parkes I forgot to mention another superb trail/fell terrain further up the road at a place called Church Stretton and there is a mountain called the Long Mynd in a National Trust area and the views are superb and you will enjoy a great training session around there. I’m based in Windsor but always go back to Shropshire when I can because of the quality scenery. 👍

I only got a pair yesterday morning, after I'd filmed most of the video. New Balance sent me a pair, I didn't know anything about them until they arrived at my door.
