It completed 250 years last year. It is the oldest regiment in the country. Fighting is the religion of soldiers. Each regiment has such a glorious history, they have some traditions. The battle of Kondhana was won by the Marathas under the leadership of Tanaji Malusare on the orders of Chhatrapati Shivaji. The same day is celebrated. Even today, Karveer Chhatrapati is given the honorary title of 'Colonel of the Regiment'.
The slogan of this regiment is 'Say Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Ki Jai'. This roar was given by Maratha soldiers all over the world during the First and Second World Wars. The end of the First World War was done by the Marathas. The Battle of Sharqat is one of the most famous military battles in the world and the culmination of World War I. Major General Shahaji Chhatrapati Maharaj had taken part in the Second World War. From the 2nd Maratha Battalion of the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment, he fought against Field Marshal Rommel, considered Hitler's right hand man. Rommel (Desert Fox) was known as the desert fox. A bomb had exploded near them during the war in Africa. For the rest of his life he could not hear with one ear.
Even after independence, during every war, the Marathas had left the battlefield. That glorious tradition continues today.

आज 'मराठा डे' म्हणजे 'मराठा लाईट इन्फन्ट्री' चा स्थापना दिवस. सह्यगिरी कुशीतील महाराष्ट्रभूमी मधल्या सामर्थ्यवान, धैर्यवान, ध्येयवान, शिस्तप्रिय, कणखर आणि चपळ सैनिकांना घेऊन ब्रिटिशांनी १७६८ मध्ये लाईट इन्फन्ट्री रेजिमेंट(बॉंबे सिपॉय) ची स्थापना केली होती. याला गतवर्षी २५० वर्ष पूर्ण झाले आहेत. देशातली हि सर्वात जुनी रेजिमेंट आहे. लढणं हा सैनिकांचा धर्म असतो. प्रत्येक रेजिमेंट चा असा एक गौरवशाली इतिहास असतो, त्यांच्या काही परंपरा असतात. छत्रपती शिवरायांच्या आदेशाने तानाजी मालुसरेंच्या नेतृत्वात मराठ्यांनी कोंढाणा जिंकला, ती लढाई 'मराठा लाईट इंफंट्री' मूळ प्रेरणा आहे. तोच दिवस साजरा केला जातो. करवीर छत्रपतींना आजही ह्या रेजिमेंट चे मानद, 'कर्नल ऑफ दी रेजिमेंट' म्हणून सर्वोच्च मानाचं पद दिल जातं.
या रेजिमेंट चे घोषवाक्य आहे, 'बोल श्री छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराज कि जय'. या गर्जना पहिल्या आणि दुसऱ्या महायुद्धांवेळी मराठा सैनिकांनी जगभर दिल्या होत्या. पहिल्या महायुद्धाचा शेवट तर मराठ्यांनीच केला होता. 'Battle of Sharqat' ही जगभरातल्या सैन्य लढ्यातील सर्वात प्रसिद्ध आणि पहिल्या महायुद्धाला संपावणारी अशी विजयी घटना आहे. दुसऱ्या महायुद्धामध्ये तर प्रत्यक्ष करवीर अधिपती मेजर जनरल शहाजी छत्रपती महाराजांनी भाग घेतला होता. मराठा लाईट इंफंट्री रेजिमेंट च्या 2nd मराठा बटालियन मधून त्यांनी हिटलर चा उजवा हात समजल्या जाणाऱ्या फिल्ड मार्शल रोमेल विरोधात लढा दिला होता. रोमेल ला(Desert Fox) वाळवंटातील कोल्हा म्हणून ओळखले जायचे. आफ्रिकेतील या युद्धावेळी एक बॉम्ब त्यांच्या जवळ फुटला होता. नंतर च्या आयुष्यभर त्यांना एक कानाने ऐकू येत नव्हते.
स्वातंत्र्यानंतर सुद्धा प्रत्येक युद्धवेळी मराठ्यांनी रणमैदान गाजवून सोडलं होतं. आजही ती उज्ज्वल परंपरा चालू आहे.
म्हणूनच मराठा सैनिकांचा केवळ भारतातच नव्हे तर जगभर दरारा अन आदर आहे. भारतातील सर्व समाजाला आणि मराठा लाईट इंफंट्री मधील सर्व शूर सैनिकांना "मराठा डे" च्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा..! आणि सर्व शुर वीरांना विनम्र अभिवादन.
