Marantz CD60 and a little history lesson

Музыка

Long time ago in a galaxy far away there was no digital music... gasp, shock, horror! Then came CD and over the aeons this has been developed to a point where no-one uses them anymore, or do they??

Thanks for doing this. I've had Marantz CD-63 SE players because they play well with my Naim system (My Naim system makes anything cheap really sound cheap.), but 1995 is way back there now, and I just spent $200 getting my current CD-63 SE fixed for one thing only to have it quit somewhere else, so after a lot of research it looks like this CD60 may be what I'm looking for, and the ability to play digital files off a thumb drive is actually something I can potentially use in the near future. Having something under warranty would be nice.

The beginning of the bbc segment looked like the clip from tomorrows world one of my favourite science & tech programs in the 70’s & 80’s I hope CD doesn’t die as I still have such a huge collection.

Hi. Great video and brief marantz history which is always interesting. I believe the first marantz cd player to be officially upgraded by the great K.I. was the midi sized cd45 from 1986 and it was dubbed the cd 45 turbo although it did not say that on the unit or box. All you got was a sticker on the rear panel. The standard 45 was a decent sounding 14 bit budget player costing around £230 ish and Ken done some tweaks that improved the performance for not much more money. These so called turbo 45's are very rare as the production was limited and this model was soon replaced by the cd273 and that model gave us and marantz the first special edition which came complete with a certificate of authentication and of course the special edition sticker on the front panel of the unit being the cd 273se which was a 16 bit 4x os player ( tda1541) and the rest is history. cd65mk11 cd65mk11se cd50 cd50se and so on etc. These se players had great clarity and separation with a full 3d soundstage and were a revelation back then for the money. Ken and marantz had hit a very successful formula which wasn't really copied until pioneer had there all ready good sounding but largely unknown A441 amp re specified and turned into the famous A400. Marantz had already done this with there excellent budget pm151 and turned it into the pm26 which was the same amp with a K.I. tuning in 1986 but the first marantz se badged amp was the pm40se from 1990. Philips/marantz/ken Ishiwata was a truly great partnership at the correct time in hi fi history and will be sadly missed but never forgotten.

Owned a few Marantz cd players over the years and always had a soft spot for them. My last one was a CD6000KI, I always found them well built and with a good house sound, glad to see them back.

Philips was certainly a HiFi brand as well. They invented together with Sony the cd! Their analog sounding cheap DACs in their cheap cd players are still famous!

Thanks for this video, enjoyed it. Have been thinking about replacing my Jurassic era CD63MKII KI for a while but with what is the question. Has been a distinct lack of reviews comparing the CD6007 with the new CD60, to have it succinctly put that the 60 is a significant step up is swaying me that way now. Prices on both have dropped in England this week too - the CD6007 can be had for £350 and the CD60 for £550. This coming pay day may be the one...

Great depth of knowledge you have. Why is that new Marantz cd player so big?

Now that's something I should have addressed ! There is no good reason, it's empty inside, well sparse if not empty. It has to be that 'hifi width' and the designers decided that bigger looks worth more, presumably

I just bought one and it blows my old arcam cd73 away. The cd60 has a smooth analogue sound that is a little like my planar 3, I love the cd 60. I paid 450 pounds, a bargain.

I had a rega planar 2 record Deck but then went for Linn Sondek, ittok asic combo. The planar 3 is a lovely record deck, I had the Marantz cd63SE Ki signature which was a lovely cd player. I’m after a CD60 and you got yours for a bargain as the cheapest I’ve found it was at richer sounds at £599

I’m in the market for a new CD player and I’m definitely in the under £100,000 bracket. 😉 🍺
