Marantz 23 Stereo AM/FM Radio Tuner Replacing Electrolytic Capacitors, Transistors, LED's For Lamps

Ойын-сауық

In this video I discuss the repair and restoration of a Marantz twenty three(23) vintage stereo AM/FM radio tuner. This unit is a good place to start if you are new to vintage audio repair and restoration. I show the replacing of old electrolytic capacitors, 2SC458 transistors that are known troublemakers as well as replacing the burned out original lamps with LED's.

Very cool! Good luck with your project. Checkout mouser.com and digikey.com. They probably will have the capacitors that you need.

This is a very good video with straight forward reasoning and grass roots work. You make even easier work fun. Not everyone can do this. All my gear is thirty or more years old. Giving them a lease on life is going to be a joy. I have the soldering gear that is more than able. The key is going to be component choices. That is going to be art grade parts for this gear is old but very well designed. I want better than new out of it. I want to make them all art grade units. This is to be heritage work. Just good will not do. It took years to find them. Now is the time to make masterpieces out of them. I have time to devote and art they will be. Thanks for inspiring us all! Stay safe mates!😊👍🏻😷

Great video for us beginners! I really enjoy your commentary and experience with vintage equipment. I with others I’m sure, would love to see you perform your tests along with tips for making your repairs as you do them. The commentary is very beneficial, but to learn from someone of your experience would ensure more vintage equipment stayed running longer! Keep up the good work, it is appreciated!

This is an awesome video. I have a 23 late version. An awesome unit and it fits perfectly together with 32 and 33 or 33 and 16 just as nice as a 20 which I also have.

Really enjoyed your vid. Back it the day peop[e didnt throw their audio equipment away when it stopped working they would take it to a shop to get it fixed. My dads best friend had a shop in the little town we lived in and he made a good living repairing TV's and such, but today if it wont turn on just throw it away!! I like to buy old audio and test gear to give them a second life and I also build project as well,, love audio gear and the old stuff is the best!!

Thanks so much for the kind words. Yes, you are so correct! Back in the day when electronics broke you had them repaired. When your modern electronics break you wait for trash day. Thanks for saving the old stuff. I do the same thing. If you haven't seen my Kenwood Eleven III video - kzread.info/dash/bejne/i35r1KmHp9G_g9Y.html or my Sansui BA-5000 video - kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZGhq0aprY5PdYNI.html check them out. Both of these units were in pretty rough shape but they both are in service again.

Hi VAA ... I bought an old Harman Kardon tuner which I'm trying to get running. It's a TU911 model made in 1987. It's picking up a signal and the signal is strong. But there's no audio output. Could you point me in the right direction in terms of trouble shooting this ? I realise there's maybe not a lot of advice you can give without seeing the unit.

Download the service manual from hifiengine.com . Some of the service manuals give you some troubleshooting tips and you need the service manual anyways. See if that helps you. Good Luck!

Hey VAA! I like your approach and realistic perspective of restoring these oldies but goodies. Funny thing is I have a Marantz 2015 receiver (1975) and I'm wondering if the FM tuner is similar to the 23? My tuner is weak for some reason. Not pulling in signals, even close anymore.. Maybe all I need to do is clean everything with MG chemicals non residue cleaner and then lube pots and switches with their super cleaner with PPE (lubricant)? And I'll look for those transistors. Marantz around that time used high quality Electrolytic Caps. I'd bet they all are still fine, but if I find one that is done, they all get done! Believe it or not, this 2015 has a Class A amp and sang like stupid expensive components! Keep the inspiration coming!

Thanks for your kind words and for commenting. Your 2015 is a nice receiver. The gain issue that you have certainly can be caused by weak or failing transistors. The 2015 and 23 tuner probably had some circuity in common but I've never worked on a 2015 so I don't know that for sure. I have never used the cleaning chemicals that you mention as I use Deoxit products but I know there are a lot of different ones out there. Good luck with your 2015 and thanks again.
