The difficulty tweaks are my favorite honestly, I love that I can make it so that enemies can near one shot me but I can also near one shot them. I despise Bethesda's bullet sponges and this is such an awesome change. Makes combat a lot less mindless, reminds me a lot of S.T.A.L.K.E.R, I'm actually checking my corners in a Bethesda game lol.

But without a health option, how is the bullet sponging avoided? Damage output of both sides needs to be balanced relative to both sides' health pools. I'm near the end of building an LO for Fallout 4, so I've not had time to test SF's combat, I just fiddled with the settings, and had to refine my weapon loadout due to ammo mass. I need mods to make me care about restarting SF, as the MQ broke on my first attempted playthrough, and I just resented it never being fixed.

Same here. First thing I did was set player damage to V easy and enemy damage to V hard. Fights are now much more lethal both ways. Spongieness made Skyrim legendary difficult too dull spamming fireballs at a single draugr boss for 30 seconds.

The fast travel system is going to be a lot more immersive and interactive, I'm glad that you mentioned that you would be more curious to explore places you've been before... Because it gives you an opportunity to Rediscover places you've been before... And utilize the new Fast travel features, all of the settings utilize a sliding scale when it comes to experience.. you can adjust the amount of credits at vendors have, you can adjust the amount of damage enemies do to you, you can adjust how much damage you do to enemies, you can adjust ship access proximity, add tons of other settings at the cost of experience points. It would be a good idea to make a hard save before you adjust any of the settings... Now that you have an opportunity to ReDiscover these locations, take some time and go to one of the cities... And explore each location, and then try fast traveling between them... I've got my seat belt on because this is going to get pretty wild!

Not enjoyable but i stuck with it and eventually started enjoying it, especially playing through the vanguard questline. It only took that long to realize starfield doesn't have that "pick a target and start exploring doing side content on the way to the target" kind of exploration i love.

Loading screens normally don't bother me that much as long as they don't take forever but even I couldn't believe some of the ridiculous loading screens in Starfield. The one that baffled me the most was the elevator in the Astral Lounge. Was it really too much for it to move up ONE floor without loading? I'm looking forward to the expansion though and hopefully they'll address more of the game's problems with it too.

  • @TheKazragore

I think Will Shen shed some light on these seemingly baffling decisions. Bethesda's development pipeline is inefficient and sluggish. He explained that getting something as simple as a new chair for an interior you're working on would require you to ask permission and contact the 3D modeling department with exact specifications and they'd ask if you also need animations with it and yadda yadda. If you were lucky, maybe your request didn't get pushed down the pipeline indefinitely. So I believe it's possible however put together the Astral Lounge and other similar interios said screw it and used a loading screen teleporter instead of asking for an animated elevator.

The new maps are making me explore more and spend more time on planets because I can now see where there are POIs, identify what they are by their shape, and then run across to them. The old way was to jump up and down on the ship to see into the distance or to fly up high or across the planet on planets with low gravity. It still takes far too long to run from one POI to another though even with my level 80 character equipped for maximum oxygen to run for long distances. I need a vehicle or, preferably, a fast jetpack. A wheeled vehicle isn't going to be any use on the forested planets because trees.

I really wonder how a map of all things wasn't there from the very start. I mean, Skyrim already had the same LOD map that they just added, so it's not like the technology wasn't there before? Like, they already made it work 13 years ago, so why didn't they do it again from the very start? And another thing, as much as I like the game (and I said like, cause love would definitely be the wrong word), what really killed all the hype from me post-release was the fact that we STILL don't have the creation kit. Skyrim and Fallout 4 had it, what, 2 months after release? And for Starfield it's not even on the horizon yet? Seriously Bethesda? What are they doing? Me and I dare say many, many people would still be playing this game if they actually provided some modding support.

I think this video maybe gave a hint as to why BGS didn't include detailed maps. It really does expose the borked limitations of the PG system. I'm on console, so my wait for mods is less assured. But yeah, after I abandoned the game (MQ broke, and BGS seem incapable of patching it), mods are really the only thing I'm waiting for. BGS really don't seem to understand, or fully appreciate, the value modding adds to their IPs. They should've been *pushing* and celebrating mod support in the showcases, but it was barely touched upon.

It's because the low poly Skyrim map was far easier to generate than Starfield's custom 3D maps. Every map is rendered in real time and they had to create a lot of additional cutoms assets especially for interior layouts. Mod support takes longer because frankly, everything takes longer these days in the games industry. It took CDPR 3 years to release update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty for Cyberpunk. I don't really understand your argument, it's not like releasing the Creation Kit right now instantly opens up a huge library of high quality mods that you can download. These things take time, it will be years before Starfield has a truly game changing mod library like Skyrim and Fallout 4.

These are good updates, but the only thing that would get me to play again is if they greatly expanded outpost building. I want to build a town on a planet with breathable air. But there is no way to build stairs, walls, floors, ceilings, bridges, doors, etc. The hab units get old fast. I spent over 400 hours building settlements in Fallout 4, but was done with Starfield's outpost system after a few hours.

  • @SabiJD

Yeah, loved the build system in F4. I really enjoyed how it essentially extended character RP, in terms of making a home feel like it reflected your character's journey (Place Anywhere FTW... ). In SF I couldn't really see an RP or mechanical reason to bother with outposts, plus the options were so limited. It seems SF was designed with teams not really having any vision of how their features would segue with other elements, or the overall flow. The outpost system just screams that. Personally I think SF most suits a kind of expedition camp system, far more than any outpost or settlement feature.

I'm actually impressed they added toggleable/customizable gameplay settings instead of the usual set difficulties, and the horrible FO4 survival mode with its very limiting and restrictive "features" (that needs a ton of mods to have any semblance of balance and playability for me). There is nothing on our way to the objective, it is just load screens. There is no space (lol) for all those random occurances to happen or predefined quests to be placed upon. The best we get is the random 'you came to the wrong neighbourhood buddy' type of bandit chats we sometimes get on entering a system. the only place where you could make up for that would be on the surface of the planets that are also more or less randomly generated. probably increase ambushes by enemies by getting them fly via ships and landing next to you. thats still quite boring and eventually with all those additions it would still be lackluster compared to Skyrim or Fallout 4. Yes. The creation engine is listed as from 2011. That is when skyrim launched i.e. the engine is older. In all actually it is a forked version of the much older gamebryo engine they used for TES3 (released 2002), TES4 and Fallout 3. Starfield was made officially with Creation Engine 2 but it the end it "only" is a beefed up version of a beefed up version of a beefed up version of a 27 year old engine. That is a big reason as to *WHY* the many loading screens are needed. And yes, TES6 is said to use this engine so the many loading screens will be there whether we want them to or not.

The 4 options relating to environmental damage & recovery, alongside afflictions and its treatment, considerably change the gameplay loop when maxing out those difficulty options. It makes treatment aid items actually useful because you gain affliction much easier, and they also don't get cured immediately when taking one. Instead, it takes time and perhaps more than one treatment item to fully cure yourself from it. Not to mention, you can gain afflictions (like puncture or burns) from combat now, depending on what weapon the enemy is using. It also makes planetside exploration more dangerous depending on the planet's conditions.

It made a massive difference on mine because I run a 4000 series, and they implemented Frame Generation which really boosts performance. But for the 3000 series you need to rely on just the DLSS alone, but that should perform better on your 3060 than FSL did, and it should look better. It's a shame that they went all-in on procedural terrain and "infinite" areas to explore, what killed the game for me was the constant loading screens between relatively tiny areas. I loved Fallout and TES games for their massive truly open worlds (for the most part), where I could walk around for hours and hours finding interesting unique scenes, only to be sidetracked by some random shenanigans - like a wolf being slung across the map by a dragon, or a settler being nuked by a charging mutant. I found that while Starfield's larger handcrafted segments inspired the same feeling, it just seemed entirely lacking throughout the main portion of the game. What made TES and Fallout great, was that it wasn't only unique in the dungeons, but the world we traveled across was equally unique. Hopefully some madlad creates a no-zone loading mod for Starfield in a few years, I'd pick it up again if I didn't have to trigger a loading-screen every 5 minutes, followed by 4 more in quick succession (flying to shop, leaving ship, selling, entering ship, flying to new location - plus whatever dungeon or shop loading there could be) Loading screens was the only reason I quit... I'm desperately hoping they won't try this sort of "infinite" crap again, it's best suited for the survival genre, not a story/ loot driven RPG.

Starfield doesn't really have that many loading screens and actually has way less than their previous games when you actually consider where most of the loading screens exist. In Starfield, going from star system to star system is obviously going to require a loading screen, right? There is no other way to do that. The best they could do here is hide it better. Going from planet to planet is also going to require a loading screen, because in the Starfield setting, the only FTL travel that exists is the grav drive which no matter how you do it, it's going to be like a load screen. Trying to manually fly to another planet would take many real life hours. Maybe even closer to days if we are being realistic here. Landing on a planet is also going to require a loading screen. Taking off from a planet is going to require a loading screen. I don't think anyone should be surprised by this. Now, when you are actually wandering around on planets, there isn't that many loading screens. Even in cities most of the so called "loading screens" is just your character being teleported and they use the loading screen as a mask so it doesn't look silly (If you don't mind seeing your character teleport from one location to another while in an elevator or taking the tram, then maybe eventually a mod will come out to remove them). For example, you can explore all of New Atlantis without using the tram aside from The Well, nearly everything is in one space, while simultaneously being on a pretty big map. No loading screen leaving or entering New Atlantis. Now with that said, there is the occasional shop that has its own space and requires loading. But compare that to Skyrim, where it's every shop that is like that within a city. Just walking through Whiterun alone you probably could go through like 10 - 20 loading screens easily. And unlike Starfield they tend to take more time. Enter Whiterun, loading, enter blacksmith, loading, exit blacksmith, loading, enter alchemist, loading, exit alchemist, loading, enter companions, loading, basement, loading, exit basement loading, exit companions, loading, enter dragonsreach, loading, exit dragonsreach, loading, enter inn, loading, exit inn, loading, exit whiterun, loading. I think people overreact to Starfield's loading screens or they just don't realize how many loading screens exist in their previous games.

In Starfield everything is gated behind loading screens, the actually interesting stuff is all separated... Since the zones you play on planets are all pretty much empty of "unique" content. You forget to consider the basic stuff: Enter ship= loading screen Fly to a zone= loading screen Leave ship= loading screen -Activities (with/without loading screens)- Enter ship= loading screen Fly to a zone= loading screen Leave ship= loading screen ^That loop plays over and over again, since you need to constantly be selling stuff.

@@Fiirow1 Look, no offence but your argument just isn't true. Nearly all of Skyrim's content requires some form of loading screen to access. The smaller cities you speak of, there usually isn't much to do there outside and most of the interesting things require accessing a house which requires a loading screen. There is way more loading screens in Skyrim, that is a fact. And they also take longer than they do in Starfield. I already gave you example, where just walking around Whiterun can lead to you dealing with 10 - 20 loading screens. Even accessing a smaller town that doesn't require a loading screen to initially enter, requires loading screens for most buildings. Want to trade? Loading screen. Last but not least, the areas you expect to not have a loading screen in Starfield is ridiculous. The best they can do is hide them better, removing them is unlikely an option.

Unlike what some trolls think, Bethesda DOES listed to feedback. They may experiment, resulting in unwanted features (like a voiced protagonist), but at least they listen to following feedback. I almost finished it. I was bored at the end that I didn't finish the Ranger questline. I can't see me going back to it at all. I have zero interest in moving chairs or tables around, I used the same ship I started the game with throughout, and a map or vehicle wouldn't make me want to explore a tile. I wouldn't want to experience any quests I've already done in the game a second time. It had its moments, like the ship where the gravity kept switching on and off throwing shit everywhere, the Mantis was a really cool idea with great rewards, the first time you encountered the Terrormorph in the Vanguard questline was good, but it was the little ideas and areas like those which were best, not the big ideas or locations which were boring. So more Homestead and Mantis Lair than Jemison or Akila and things could have been different. They should have done something with the L.I.S.T stuff, that was a missed opportunity for making exploration relevant.

I think it should've been coming into contact with an actual, intelligent alien species. So many sci-fi games either take place in periods where first contact is old history, or the aliens are just immediately hostile with little to no hope of diplomacy. When I first encountered the Starborn I was so goddamn excited, it felt like everything I had done had lead to that that moment, to board their ship and meet a new sapient species for the first time. And then the reveal that they were just alternate versions of human characters... most disappointed I had ever been in a story (video game or otherwise). It would've been far more cool to make first contact with a proper alien species and try to forge a friendship with them, learn about their cultures and beliefs, technology, etc. Or be a complete goblin and go to war with them for their sick-ass alien tech lol.

I have the complete opposite viewpoint on the new maps. To me all they do is very clearly show just how empty and boring 98% of the playable space is. With the old map you just had a general idea of what the terrain is and where the POIs are, but the way to map actually looks was left up to you to explore. Yes the new maps are much better from a visual point of view, but they just leave absolutely nothing to the imagination. You just see the infinite sea of the same ground texture dotted with the same pool of 6 different bushes and rocks. This update is just too little, too late. Sure it adds some cool new features, but it's not like it fixes the idiotic writing and characters, or the lack of real time travel between planets and systems, or the limited fishbowl exploration. These issues quite frankly not only won't be fixed, for the most part they literally cannot be fixed. The story and characters would require a complete rewrite, recording voice lines, etc. And the boring, loading screen filled exploration is tied to the way the engine works. Even some of the most active Bethesda modders have already given up on Starfield, because even when they release the modding tools, it's the core features of the engine itself that are holding the game back.

Probably because covid created a gap that shifted all plans 1 to 2 years forward which they weren't ready for.

And , sure , for Starfield they listened and ended up changing it, after one year and a half, but what did they give us ? The Skytim map in Starfield ....
