The 2 things I loved most about that were: -watching people that grew up in Toronto complain about the names -watching someone that is too young to have ever used dialup or internet have his clips edited with dialup noises
@softballfreak1123

idk hes a year older than me and I used dial up internet until 2012 so theres a chance lol

You clearly don't know anything if you think someone who grew up in the 90s never used dial up.
@PpP-dr1od
Жыл бұрын
@@shawnpitman876 I mean, I was less accurate than I thought I was when I wrote it, in part because Mitch is perpetually older than I think he is and because dial up lasted longer than I thought it did. Regardless, Mitch was born in 1997, so he by no means grew up in the 90s, and as someone that was born pretty close to Mitch and have friends both older and younger that never used dialup, I'd still say there is a good likelihood Marner didn't use dialup considering only about a third of households used dialup over broadband in 2000 when Mitch would've been 3. Is this a pointlessly long response to a minor comment? Yes, but you hurt my feelings because I put way to much of my emotional wellbeing into what people think of me and writing this made me feel better.
@shawnpitman876
Жыл бұрын
@@PpP-dr1od No one even knew you were talking about Mitch. Because you named NO ONE the default assumption would be that you're referring to the host of the video, Steve "Dangle" Glynn. Who most certainly did grow up in the 90s.
@PpP-dr1od
Жыл бұрын
@@shawnpitman876 I understand where you are coming from, but all of the clips where dialup noises were used were solo shots poking fun at Mitch. Since Mitch is both the person being made fun of and the only person in most of the shots w dialup noises, I thought it was clear I was talking about Mitch. Funny enough, half the reason I wrote the comment is because I'm a fan of SDPN and Dangle complains about feeling old all the time.

I don't blame ANY OF THEM for not knowing these names. I grew up in Mississauga and made all of their mistakes like Straw-chan/Strack-an, Queens Kew-ay, Ron-say-vall-es, I didn't even know Grosvenor was pronounced that way

3:53 Straw-n is how my family has always pronounced it. There's some family story about how when they immigrated from Scotland they changed the pronunciation but not the spelling to sound more Canadian. Not sure if that's true or just a story though.

It's Scots Gaelic, ch's can often get prounounced more like just an h or like a gh.
@kevwwong

It's possible. They derived the pronunciation from the person they named the street after, so it's always been "Strawn". The school (Bishop Strachan School) is also pronounced that way. History is weird, I guess.
@Zraknul

Also the locals don't necessary retain a mastery of the word in a language they don't speak. The US has a city the locals call "La-feet", with the spelling Lafayette. Obviously French, named after the Marquis de Lafayette who was an American Revolutionary War hero. But it's now butchered.

Visting toronto for the first time- gonna have to try these on my friends
I would say as someone who lives near Roncesvalles most people don’t make it plural by pronouncing the last S. It sounds more like Roncesvalle and kind of trails off at the end
I go by how the TTC stop announcements says these street names
Good thing these guys communicate with circles and x's
They should have done this a couple of years ago when they were in Newfoundland. Their heads would have melted. Our names are dumb 😂
No problemo ... just keep being elite as always Mitch.

Yes, however, the Queensway is spelled just like that, and Queens Quay is not. Given both are extremely well known (and Queens Quay's proximity to Scotiabank) they should see and know the difference.

@@nutritionperfection they're probably confused because the queensway is close to their practice facility and queens quay is close to their arena so they accidentally associate queensway with queens quay

As someone who has lived in Mississauga all my life, and worked in downtown Toronto for over 30 years, I found all these very easy, but if I, like most of these guys, saw these names for the first time I'd get most of the wrong too. Here's my contribution: Breadalbane St. ???⬇️ bred-AWL-bin (named after an area in Scotland)
Yessir
What, no Bloor St.?
it is pronounced Spud-eye-nuh now, but according to my grandfather who is no longer with us, who lived his entire life in Toronto (from the 1930s to 2010s), it was pronounced Spud-EE-nuh as late as the early 1960s. Wonder why it changed
How do the ones that come from Toronto not know their city streets? Stra Chin?
F Strachan. Used to work at Strachan and King. God I felt like a fool giving directions the first time
How did Tecumseth St. not make the cut, lmao?
