Maple Leaf Rag - Scott Joplin

Музыка

This video and the other I'm posting is for my wonderful online friends who have encouraged me to put more of my own playing out there. You'll hear a lot of trip-ups and some of the keys on my piano do not play, but I definitely think I got in the mood for playing these two. I hope you enjoy it and please go easy on me, it's not meant to be a professional/representative performance.

    This is so cool! I play the maple leaf rag all the time, but without those cool embellishments. I was wondering though how did you learn to do those? Like is it based in music theory or just fiddling around? Sorry I know I sound stupid but I was just curious

  • @rowanbelt3612

    @rowanbelt3612

    Ай бұрын

    Thanks so much! You don't sound stupid at all, that's a great question. To be honest, I am not the greatest at improvisation. I easily get lost and mess up if I try and play things too far outside of the box. Pretty much, I just know the song very well so that I can make embellishments and get back on track without thinking about it too hard. You want to have a very good sense of where you are rhythmically and harmonically so you can stay solid. After that, having good hand-ear coordination is very helpful. I think experimentation is too. A lot of the ornaments I play similarly every time because one time I did something randomly and liked how it sounded. I've played this piece for about 13 years at this point! Finally, I'd recommend checking out Richard Zimmerman's performances...he was a great inspiration to me. I hope this rambling response is helpful...let me know if you have any other questions!

    Very nice performance! My Beckwith looks a lot like your piano though yours is in far worse shape, I hope you'll be able to get it restored at some point because I imagine it would sound wonderful! Thank you! Unfortunately chances are it will never get restored for several reasons, but I might have the ability to do some minor repairs to get all the notes playing at least. Some of the hammers are so loose that they do not hit the right strings. I wanted to at least document the piano online in case it is destroyed or otherwise lost in the future. Yes I did get some inspiration from the Connorized roll, and also a lot from Eubie Blake and Richard Zimmerman, as well as a few of my own inventions (although of course my own creativity derives from that of others!) You're right. My primary goal is to get some of the hammers repinned. I can live with all sorts of problems but when you play a C and the hammer hits C# it makes everything sound awful. This sort of problem has started to become very serious in the range of notes Bb4-F#5. I think it is partially because as the hammers get loose, they start to hit the neighboring hammers which loosens them as well.

  • @PiotrBarcz

    @PiotrBarcz

    Thank you for those recommendations! I do intend to tune the piano in the next few months. I tend to have too much sitting on top of it. I appreciate your kind comments. Have a great day!

    @@robertantonides No worries, I understand that everyone has their own preferences. If I play it slower, there will be people saying "too slow" lol. Most rags I do like to play slower but this is an exception. Allison Smith plays very well, thank you for drawing my attention to her video :)

    No it's not. I've heard the piano roll of Scott Joplin himself playing it. He actually played it even faster.

    @@SkgwgaiettoBasically, this type of music would be played at 'erotic venues' back in the day. That's how Scott Joplin got the illness that killed him too.
