Maori Woman With Face Tattoo Is 1st to Anchor Primetime News

A New Zealand woman made history on Christmas Day, becoming the first person with a Maori face tattoo to anchor a primetime newscast. Oriini Kaipara has been a journalist for almost 20 years, focusing on issues of the country’s indigenous Maori people. In 2019, she chose to get moko kauae, a traditional face tattoo for Maori women. That’s when she became the first person with such a tattoo to anchor a mainstream television program. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.

No one is asking where this tribal tradition came from either. Probably, most likely it was a form of subjugation in a male dominated society. Ironically, just like today. Pacific Islander tribes had slaves and tattooed them to show ownership. Tattooed them under the eyelid in fact. Just because it's ancient and exotic doesn't mean it's a good decision or being woke. Time for everyone to take a world history course and watch a documentary instead of Bravo or the news.

It's also against our rules and New Zealand policy if he/she comes from a cultural/group background. So tattoos can be acceptable all over the world and more if you come from a cultural standpoint which makes a lot more sense.

Thats very neat Now it'd be neat to know what hers means and how each tattoo is created and who decides how it looks and why it looks that way specifically

I'll admit that it looked funny to me at frist because I didn't know anything about the tattoo. But understanding the context behind it I think it's great and important to do be able to do this for your people.

I honestly believed that is so immature to fire or non-hire someone because of a face tattoo you don't even know the person they just might actually be the best employee or they might actually be a good person and they just might be very creative
