That saying has been around since long before that movie. I had first heard it from my Welsh-born coach when I was just learning the game as a kid in the 1990s. Only he didn't use the term Soccer.

I had cancer and survived, losing a right kidney and my omentum. I had no income protection at the time and 2 Maori scaffolding mates walked around the construction site asking for donations to help me n my plight. The 2 Maori mates were knocking on my door 1 week after my surgery with the money they had collected from the whip around on site.I was given money on 3 separate occasions, they had gone out of there way to gather and collect the doosh to help me out. My Maori mates have serious bucket loads of good karma, they told me Kia Kaha . Be Positive Be Strong They are inspiring mates. They are powerful spirits Maori folks. This vid to me, exemplifies Maori. Dynamically Dignified, Dynamically Respectful and Dynamically Powerfull. Cheers n Big respect to the Maori All Blacks n to all Maori folks. RIP Anthony Foley

The guy that helped organise the trip was a lovely Irish fella called Brendon and he helpfully drove a bunch of excitable teens around in the van all week. It wasn’t until near the end of the trip that it transpired he was in fact Brendon Foley and he’d played for Ireland and for Munster in their famous win over the AB. So humble he hadn’t even mentioned it before then. Never met Anthony but having met his father I’m not surprised he’s as respected as he is. And fantastic memories. 👍🏼

So nice to see and just so that you know.................our Maori Team does not just pay respect to Anthony but also respect to his Whanau (Family) and for those who went before him. This Haka is a tribute to his death, spirit and culture..............many people may find this hard to understand but in these situations we pay so much respect to a persons heritage, culture and 'extended' family. Not only blood relatives ......................because in our culture "Whanau' relates to loving friends, team mates and associates. To Anthony, i know you are now at peace, no doubt have a great smile on your face and much Aroha (love and respect) not only from Maori's but from New Zealand as a whole. Ka Kite ano, my friend.
