MANUFACTURE THIS: Toilet Paper

This is a doco I made as my final project for a Diploma in Television Production at Aoraki Polytechnic. It's only the second doco I've ever made. We had to come up with a 5 part TV series but we only had to film the first episode. I hope you enjoy :)

The young woman at the end, I had to laugh when she said the toilet is no place to be neat...Ummmmm bet after she had little ones, she will be second thinking that one! When I was young probably six or seven one evening after we ate dinner, my Daddy asked us kids to remain at the table he wanted to ask us some questions. He started with me how many sheets of as he called it commode paper I used when I passed my water in the front, and right after asked me how many sheets I used to pass the solid in the back? (BOL All us kids used to laugh behind his back when he referred to peeing and pooping as passing the front and back items) Any way I told him maybe three sheets for peeing and about four to six to wipe after pooping. He smiled, his next question was did I fold or did I bunch up the commode paper, to which I said I fold. He then asked my two sisters, the same questions he asked me about front and back, then he asked my oldest sister who was 17yrs at the time, how many sheets she used when she had her monthly, at the time I didn't know what a monthly was, and remember thinking she goes several times a day into the bathroom not monthly. Any way she blushed and said as politely as she could, that was not really his concern, what else did he want to know like how many sheets she used to wrap her sanitary items with. He didn't skip a beat, he said exactly that was my next question. My sister looked at him red faced and said to the first question, four or five sheets and probably ten to twenty sheets to wrap her things up. She also said I am a folder by the way. He then asked the other sister, and she just answered like this was something we talked about all the time. My oldest brother said, since he didn't wipe after passing water, he used eight to ten sheets for pooping. The other brother said the same thing. I don't know what made me ask Daddy this question, but I asked how come you don't want to know about their monthly? He just smiled and said boys did not have that. At that point he told us kids that the commode paper was disappearing way too fast, so we needed to use less. He explained that at the PX (military post exchange store) the month previous the commode paper went up in price and if he had to pay more, then we would use less. Daddy was in the Air Force. In 1963 our family used Swanee toilet paper, which was about .25 for two rolls, he usually bought three packs, which cost him around $1.50 That year they raised the price to .35 for two rolls so now he paid out $2.10 for 6 rolls. He told all of us how much we should be using to keep from wasting the toilet paper.

Interesting to see how it is done in different countries. In the US the paper mill is at the same plant that makes TP. That way any waste can be recycled in plant, no need to ship it off. I am surprised they don't sell those end cuts. They would still be usable. For a college project this was well done. I didn't like the music, the opening skit, the surveys or interviews but I really enjoyed the factory tour. In spite of my minor criticisms I gave ya a thumbs up.

Read the historical novel Tai-Pan, set in Hong Kong when the British empire still existed and when the Scottish were among the most prolific traders, to read about the origins of toilet paper. As I recall, Clavell said that toilet paper was invented by the Chinese. That's not too surprising. The Chinese invented pulp-based paper in the Second Century AD., according to Wikipedia and other sources that pre-exist Wikipedia.

I am from the Czech Republic and I don't have any access to a toilet paper plant and you have really nice shots. It's only for study reasons, there won´t be any profit from the video. Could I please use your shots (only about 5 seconds) in my project? And of course you can be sure that I mention in it that these shots are yours.

"The average person spends 3 years on the toilet over the course of a lifetime." Assuming the average lifespan of 74 years, that's over 58 minutes per day sitting on the crapper. Someone either needs to rethink their math, or invest in some laxatives.

Actually, I disagree with your statement. I am an engineering student studying things like these. Machines and robots making things does put the people who work the assembly line out of work, yes. BUT, think about all the additional jobs that these machines create. The person who repairs them, designs them, builds them, safety inspects them, etc. People have to adapt. A VHS repairman years ago probably would've lost his job when the DVD or Blu Ray player came out, so that means if he wants a job, he has to LEARN how to fix a Blu Ray player now. If anything, these machines are brightening the future. Forcing the future generations to think harder and bigger.

Acts 4:10-12 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 11This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. 12Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Your works can’t save you, only the blood of Jesus Christ (God) can cleanse you from all sin! Simply trust in Jesus Christ and be saved John 6:47 KJV Gods perfect word is in the Old Testament/New Testament aka the Holy Bible!
