I'm 59 yrs old, and have drove a lot of different things since the age of 14. I drive a 2016 cascadia. There have been times when I thought a standard would be better. In reality though an automatic takes some learning. It's not just put it in gear and go, well it kind of is. I'll tell you something. They're safer. With 35,000 lbs you can hit all 3 Jake breaks, and stop quickly in a short distance. While in a standard you would still be fussing , and thinking. Also the cruise control will hold a certain speed on a long downgrade with the truck itself adjusting the gears, and engine breaks. No standard can do these things. In the slippery areas you shift it yourself.

Anybody who says manuals are better believe people can see how "cool" they are when shifting. Wish someone would tell them, NOBODY CAN SEE YOU SHIFTING, YOU'RE NOT COOL. Automatics are better in EVERY way.

I really need to comment on this video even though it is old. I am a former driver with May trucking. Everything you said is almost correct, except the part about holding a gear when going down a steep grade. Anyone who knows May's freight lanes knows we travel a lot in the Rocky mountain ranges and on rough routes. I very much liked the automated transmission teamed up with the Cummins engine on my 2016 model truck.....I could lock it in a specific gear going down a grade. My last truck with May was a 2019 model with the DT12. The ability to lock it into a specific gear had been disabled by the company. We almost always were under heavy loads. Even using the "grade assist" mode, the truck would not hold the gear and speed that I needed. The only way to keep the truck within acceptable RPM range was to slow it down to a crawl...then it would stay in a specific gear and not over rev. I begged to have the company to trust me and give me back the ability to lock it in a specific gear....sadly they would not. This is creating a dangerous situation . Schneider did the same thing with their fleet with similar results....they realized it was dangerous and reactivated the drivers ability to manually shift the automated transmissions. Good for Schneider for realizing it was a problem...shame on May for not trusting their drivers. No I don't work for Schneider...but maybe someone at May will realize the problem this is creating...especially with their new trucks. I'm getting frustrated just writing this and I'm not coming down the Cabbage.

Good video on automatics.. I like either. In non commercial cars & trucks , the most heavy duty trucks have auto trans and so do cars. The car/ truck seem to last longer, I surmise since the auto shifts smoother and more predictable, it's less hard on the drive train.

. i just felt that i have less control in the automatics, the accelerator is very touchy and yes it takes forever to build up speed at stop lights... i used creep mode to back but it does roll forward...going down hills at of PA or WV i had to use the manual mode. the jake brake works well but more than anything i will like the opportunity to get better in a manual after spending thousands in school and taking the test in a manual only to be pressured into an automatic

I've had two prostars with Ultra Shifts. The only auto that's worth a fk is the Allison TC10.. all the rest are clutch robo shifter POS. It's not about "manly nonsense" for me, it's about control of the truck... "Super economy" programming from the company... manual button shifting lock out... and "Creep mode" is iffy on most of the robo shifters. Drive that puppy on slick roads when it decides to down shift.. allot of fun soon follows. The bottom line is; Manual trans have Superior control and dependability. It goes in gear every time, so long as you have an arm or leg. When you get a "fault" code on your robo shifter, your sitting, and waiting for mr. fixit. Owner ops; Robo shifter is 8 to 16 grand MORE. Like Bob Marley said; No autotrans, No cry.

Just because a big rig has an automated transmission doesn't mean "anybody" can get it and drive, it is still 72 feet and up to 80,000 pounds of vehicle. And to your other point regarding the ECM, even manual trucks have ECM's and other components that can fail leaving the manual truck stranded just as easily as one with an automatic transmission.

Ppl and technologies always making stuff to screw up the industry. These will dam sure make money go round the country i tell ya cause it will keep ya at the fuel stop. lol plus they say automatics doesnt let the driver be in control shoods the driver should always be in control of everything. Just like technology is fixn to make this dam auto-pilot truck. accident waitng to happn. Truckn is a big responsibility enough and these auto-pilot trucks is gonna really make the truck wreck lawyers do more homework. Just sayn bro. But keep on trucking brauh and, be careful out there.

Before you speak on a subject you clearly don't know about maybe you should educate yourself. You can start by going to Detroit's YT site and watch their video on the DT12 transmission and you'll see that is EXACTLY how they designed it.

Automatic transmission is a step closer before self-driven trucks. This information comes from cummins enginer in Columbus, indiana. Who also happens to be my cousin. Truckers better wake up and smell the coffee. The more experienced truckers refuse to drive automatic transmission, then the longer it would be before they have an actual real time data to convince the big trucking companies to invest in self-driven trucks. Trucker don't be a GUINEA PIG. Be ware of ships in a wolf cloth on utube, or people who are aginst their self interst. some people can't see further than their nose. keep it real and stay safe. Manual transmission forever !!!

There will ALWAYS be a truck drivers, including inside the self-driven trucks. Budweiser already has a self-driven truck here in Colorado that makes runs from Ft. Collins to Denver and it to has a driver. Self driven trucks can only be automated on the highway which means the driver will take over when driving through city streets and also for the backing maneuvers. People that think the industry will phase out drivers because of self-driven trucks in our lifetime are paranoid - it won't happen. The laws and legislation alone that must be passed in state after state is going to being a very long process in itself. Don't let the paranoia get ya, there will always be a job available for a truck driver - at least in our lifetime.

Totally agree! I think some people, especially the paranoid - there'll be no more truck drivers crowd, seem to forget, that driving a 80,000 80' truck - is a Hella lot more sophisticated, than driving a Prius! I'd even wager a safe bet, that it'll be well-long after I'm dead and gone, before self-driving semi's are a thing in everyday life.

Boooooo. Im getting into to trucking because im a fan of banging gears idk just something about it and i refuse to have a computer tell me what gear i need to be in going down a hill we all know computers fail the f-35 is the perfect example. In the end your going to see more accidents then ever before with these autos 40 tons you need to know how to multitask plus the industry is short drivers they're getting anyone they can and thats the real reason their going auto personally. If i owned my own company and needed 4,000 drivers i could fill that in secs with autos that E restriction is a bitch as for fuel consumption they've been going back and fourth for years manual wins hands down its all on the driver. This plain is going to back fire just like the last time its only a matter of time top it off you want women driving a auto or a stick shift!! You damn right stick shift you know what the splitter is Daaaa Ballz.. "Daaa BEARS"

Really it's going to fail. 1st the gentleman that did this video don't run as heavy as I do and I run an automatic. Oh and guess what there's guys in my company who pull a lot heavier than I do and I mean a lot heavier. Like our dual lane 19 axle trailer. Needs two trucks to move it. And guess what both of those trucks are automatic. So before you comment. Please know what your talking about.

Autos are trash when winter driving, in fact dangerous. Anyone with years of stick and sliding wont or cant argue this fact. The autos have a consistency issue with feel and feedback as well. They are good for three things, newbs, fuel mileage and Chicago rush hour.

brandon sampley Exactly. I was in a manual for my training so I had to educate myself on the DT12. I went to Detroit's YT page and watched their videos on the transmission and it was a piece of cake after that. Some are just too lazy to do that so they don't know these basic things like how to engage creep-mode, ect.

Good uninformative vedio. I rode a scoooter for 2 years before i got a motorcycle, you would not believe the amount of times i was called a pussy. Even tho the scooter can do 85 on the freeway and is way more useful than a motorcycle. You have all type of storage to carry stuff and no gears or clutch to fuss with. I can't carry shit on my Kawasaki Ninja. I think guys just love gears and clutches lol.

I worked for May a long time ago! They sucked... anyways I’ll chime in!!! The next generation of trucks absolutely suck. There are too many computers and bullshit to actually drive anymore. CEOs go by what looks good on paper, not what is an actual realistic way. Those Detroit engines aren’t actually Detroit engines. They’re a weird Mercedes/Detroit hybrid. Companies usually set them to high torque, low hp for fuel, not realizing it’s actually killing the fuel economy. And no. Autos are not more fuel efficient especially under heavy loads. I know because my 10 speeds simply got better economy. The auto clutch always overheats and the worst part? That obsessive fetish those stupid things have with first gear. Ugh. And when it does a lock to where you have no choice but to take off in first gear? I want to rip that weak SOB out and smash it. It’s not about driving anymore. It’s about guiding an experimental “travel convenience” vehicle down the road.
