Manu S Pillai in conversation with Jael Silliman

Manu S Pillai’s work The Ivory Throne: Chronicles of the House of Travancore is a treasure house of information based on deep research that traverses many eras.
Manu is one of the youngest upcoming and promising authors of India. His seminal work The Ivory Throne is a 694-page saga on the remarkable life of Sethu Lakshmi Bayi - the last and forgotten Queen of the House of Travancore. A gripping story of how a Queen became a commoner and faded into obscurity.
Pillai’s age and countenance belies the stupendous work that he has managed to accomplish in his debut novel. The 31st session of An Author’s Afternoon transported the audience to a different era. Flashes of royal politics, scheming, betrayals and the onslaught of time on a moribund society steeped deep-rooted traditions and rituals were the ingredients of a riveting story of real life happenings which came to life through the narratives of the Guest Author.

anwin thomas I've always wondered if this matrilineal system of property transaction, which was not just with rajas but also with aristocrats including Nairs and ( Syrian mostly) Christians were one reason why Kerala had high social indices- at least this system would have provided a historical context n a backbone these developments, along with the communist era, since women of high status and enough wealth provided them better education( Travancore by the way had the first all girls school n had the highest female literacy rate in the country at 1905, according to reports, which was 33 out of 1000, the highest at that time) and educated women meant,at least in the Indian context, a more healthy household and children brought up in better circumstances and environment that values education). I might be wrong, but I wonder.

The History what we have learned was distorted and biased without doing justice to fair presentation of facts, cause and actions. All this time it was meant to propagate the political, economic intellectual interest to any major cult. In due Couse it mirrored the views of the colonial British, the Nehurvain socialist and utopian leftist and extreme rights and fringe groups.I believe this charismatic young guy have to guts to recreate the history as such it had happened without compromising on its chastity. Thank You are opening the new window to look back to the flamboyant panoramic view of history with out that old glass of prejudice.

I am little concerned how Pillai chooses to ignore the impact of Christian Missionaries had an impact on removing social evils (though I need to accept that I have not read his book). It would be good if he reads the book by Vishal Mangalwadi, A Letters to a Post Modern Hindu. I would appreciate if he could write a book on this.
