Only the first number (to the complete left) is a negative number, so: -8 plus 1 = -7 -7 + 0.5 = -6.5 -6.5 + 0.25 = -6.25 -6.25 is the correct answer there. It seems you added the 0.5 and 0.25 and went back to minus, but you’re already below zero so adding makes the number go closer to 0

0.375 so this becomes 375 x 10^-3 in decimal. In Floating point binary, this can be written as 0000000011 111010

isn't the last example -7.75??

I understand why you ask this question ... Towards the end the calculation was not done to return the mantissa to the positive two's complement value. ie. 1001.11 is (- 0110.01) ... That is then -6.25
