Manta ray, a giant of the ocean

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Swimming next to a manta ray is a great privilege, because she is one of the giants of the ocean, the manta rays can measure eight meters and weigh 1400 kilograms, recently we learned that they are family of sharks.
We know very little about the manta ray, they are a mystery, because they can't live in an aquarium. The greatest danger to the manta ray is the fishing harpoon. But the manta rays are still a really mistery.

I'm just back from a sail to Lady Eliot Island in the Great Barrier Reef QLD which has 170 resident manta rays. I was dropped in the middle of an area that had many manta rays. As we were snorkelling my buddy and I were approached by 7 large manta rays. They swam past 4 times and the last time the boldest swam straight at us mouth open and deftly missed us by less than 1 metre returning to its course at the surface then swam off. We were hanging in the water as still as we could so as not to startle them and they startled us!! They were very inquisitive and bold in the way they swam up to us and kept returning to us.

"It's like swimming with one of the giants of the ocean!" You don't say!? It's not "like" it IS! As far as they go I didn't even know they got this huge until yesterday when I got a video recommended about people trying to save one by getting it back in the water, and I almost fell out of my chair when I saw the size of it! It reminds me of some type of underwater vehicle from Star Wars!

"Their recovery will be difficult as long as we know so little about them." Um not really. How about humans just leave them the fuck alone? We usually do more harm than good. We don't need to stick our noses into everything.

Rahf Not sure why your question is in quotes, but I would think as long as we aren't destroying their habitats or dumping oil into the ocean we'll do a lot less damage than messing with them like we love to do.

+8bit I agree about destruction and oil disasters, but aside from things like that, that we KNOW harm them, what are you referring to? "Messing with them" Are you saying we should not try to study them?

@8bit Did you not listen carefully? he said they are threatened because humans harvest the same fish that the ray eats. There is no direct contact between humans and manta rays that threatens them, so you're comment is non-sequitur.

Why not? We can take the piss and critique everything else, why should religion get a free pass? If anything it should be one of the most heavily criticised things in society, religion shouldn't be given a safe space. We shouldn't encourage critical thinking, progress and innovation but then turn around and say "oh no this is special, turn off your brain when it comes to this topic". If you put your opinion or god etc into the public arena then you have to be prepared to take the criticisms and the challenges
