Mannerism (Late Renaissance Art)
www.tomrichey.net/renaissance
After the end of the High Renaissance in the 1520s, Renaissance art continued to evolve as artists challenged the classical conventions of grace, symmetry, and proportion. The style of Mannerism emerged in the mid-sixteenth century with elongated figures that were painted to inspire a sense of grandeur and emotion rather than striving after ideal beauty.
The Mannerist style of painting can be best seen in Michelangelo's later works and in the works of Parmigianino and El Greco. The works of the latter two artists will be emphasized in the second part of this lecture.

You are a great teacher, sir. As someone with adhd, I listened to the whole thing without any signs of losing focus.
Just what I was looking for. Thank you! 😊
Not hella regilious nor am I in great awe over renaissance paintings, but my professor made this video a requirement. I am glad she did because too you explain the mannerism era is not only entertaining, but your joy of teaching is making me enjoy the learning. Thank you!
Came to be educated. Didn't expect to be entertained as well. Thanks! Loved it!
Hey Tom you are too good in explaining. Thankyou soo much😊
I wish I had a history professor like you when I was in high school.
The same thing happened in Ancient Greece, with the perfection of the Classical era leading to the surrealism and experimentation of Hellenistic Art. Great video btw!

Indeed, in Uffizi, you have a Hellenistic Art together with Mannerists. They were looking at the Hellenistic sculptures discovered in Rome at that time.
thank you for your information and video!

Your southern accent really kills me!
Great video! Very helpful. I think you might find John Shearman's book on Mannerism helpful for describing how the term mannerism came to light.

Ref to the timetable around 3.12: Baroque did not last until 1770s. The baroque lasted until around 1730 (dates for new styles are always "around" and parallell with old styles for a while), around the time when rococo emerged. Around the 1770s the neoclassicism was clearly established but it had started slightly already around 1750s.
why have you deleted the reneissance and reformation videos?
Metal is a as good of a combo with this kind of art, as Classical Music
also isnt it true that this mannerism art conincided with the counter reformation at the time?
What a great historian indeed!
