    Yep ,I go to Manistee every summer to visit family. Been doing it for decades. This never gets old. Great place in the summer , lots of fun beach stuff to do there. 😎👍

    We used to sit along the Muskegon channel fishing and watch the freighters go by. That was in the 60's. My da worked the docks for a while after comming back from the Korean war. He loved taking us down to the channel to watch the freighters come in just for fun.

    Just a few years ago the 1000 footers were still coming into Muskegon with coal for the power plant. That was quite a site to see. Now the plant is closed and not as much freighter traffic will be moving in and out.

    Such a cool sight to see! Especially, in the middle of the night. My family goes up to Manistee every year and we always try to catch this at least once while we're there.

    Unbelievable !!! This is not at all like driving my KIA Soul through a tool booth, that's for sure - I am amazed that this can be done at all....to all who designed whatever makes this possible, and to all who actually performed this feat - you have my greatest admiration and respect...

    @@WowImSalty The boat is outbound and has already passed under the Memorial Street bridge. This is the Maple Street bridge and from here it's a clear shot out to Lake Michigan.

    Ogunquit, Maine has a hand operated draw bridge. When a boat needs it opened they rely on a passerby to open it. It's way cool.

    Look at the hull plating all pushed in !!! I worked at the Newport News Shipyard on the enterprise refueling and update. All the deformities are below the waterline. Ships talk Bends gouges etc are the ships way of saying look i gotta boo boo.

    This is the easy part of the river. From here it's pretty much a straight shot to Lake Michigan. The piece of river behind the bridge is narrow with a nasty curve. It limits the boats coming in to Manistee to a maximum of about 730 feet.

    This is the Maple Street bridge, several blocks west of the US31 bridge.

    Is that thing maneuvering without tugboats? Around Hampton Roads big ships like that can't even get into the Elizabeth River without tugboats. Especially the aircraft carriers. And it's at lest a mile wide.

    @@jamesspafford5985 There are no mines in Manistee. They pump water into underground salt deposits to dissolve the salt, then pump the brine back up to be dehydrated and processed into usable salt products like salt blocks for livestock and water softener pellets

    dynodon427 Vessels confined to the Great Lakes , no matter what the size have been called “boats” for decades. Ocean freighters visiting the lakes are “ships”.

    I've only ever heard the old timers say they worked on "the boats." (This is in Manistee, Ludington, and Frankfort.) Linguistically speaking, this ship/boat debate is an odd thing that English speakers have decided to have. An equivalent debate would be whether we're going to classify chicken and poultry as two different things based on size, where it's from, or where it's eaten.

    I was supposed to take the SS badger from Milwaukee to Muskegon like eight years ago and they canceled it due to gale warning. The weather Channel said that in the middle of Lake Michigan there were some waves with tips as high as two stories. That’s some serious white tips!

    TheKira699 While there are rub rails on the sides of the ship, Great Lakes ships do way more docking and locking than do ocean going ships. Particularly when entering a lock, they put the side of the bow against the pier and drive the ship in. This assumes that they have enough room on the opposite side. This is really important when the ship is a 1000’ er such as the Paul R. Tregurtha.

    They must have GE 4 stroke diesel engines in there to smoke that much. Put some EMD V16 710's in there. Better in the long run.

    Actually, by lake standards, she isn't that old. She was launched in 1973 as the Paul Thayer, renamed Earl W. Oglebay in 1994, then Manitowoc in 2008 with Lower Lakes buying her from Wilmington trust. As best I can find, she is still powered by 2 V-16 ALCo diesels producing about 5,600 hp...

    No, not the fuel. Insufficient air to burn the fuel. Could be turbo-lag, or just crude mechanical fuel injection responding to control inputs for more turns. Consider the obvious vessel age, thus the main engine also.
