Brings back some great memories. Ran a few different 4600’s back in the late 70’s early 80’s it was considered the Cadillac of draglines. Nothing like them with the inter lock system.
I was the Operator for a US Navy owned 4600 it was in Rota Spain. Engines were 12v71 and 6-110. The main counter weigh could not be seen from outside it was behind the visible rear weight. It was a box filled with solid Lead. It took two super 20 pettybone forklifts, a 40 ton PB had crane and a TD-20 dozer to lift and push it into place. The box was built of 2inch plate. I used Ivory soap bars to lube the slides. ChiefD
One of these rests in peace under 500 feet of water in Lake Ontario, since it fell off of a barge in a storm in 1981. Thanks for the great tour of this amazing machine!

Cool Don. I’m pretty much in the same boat, just on the good old Lima units. Began in 79 and actually still in the coal industry today. I sure miss the dragline years, still My favorite piece of equipment to operate though almost nonexistent here in NW Pa. for quite some time.
Thank you for sharing this,,,, great to see these machines still around to admire .

Always appreciate your documentation of a rapidly changing industry.
Another great video. Thank you so much for the information, I look forward to every new video you do.
Great job. I remember a gang of these machines and 3900s digging the channel up the Verdigris River to Tulsa. Those guys could really cast.
Ive ran two of these bad boys both had cummins 1150 hoist and 855 swing. both where sitting on barges to unload barges with a 12 cubic yard clamshell
Love these videos thank for all the research and time explaining keep up the great work I’ve learned a lot from you 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Another well done video . Thanks again
I have Only ran One (1) of these, It was an Old one that looked Just like this. I only ran it’ a week, when the guy was out sick, and My machine was Down for MX. It’s funny you mention them at 16:15 but yes, I mostly ran the LIMA 2400’s in Both the Three (3) drum Clamshells, diesel & electric unloading barges, and the A & B models of Draglines with 7 - 8 yard buckets both loading barges and making piles with them... 👍😎
Beautiful K model in there. Side note, 1150, K19 KT, KTA all same engine essentially just add aftercooling. Even though you probably already knew that. Awesome video, cool they let crawl around and inside these machines! Keep em coming!
nice posting.. keep them coming,,, thanks,,,

Thanks man! Glad you liked it! I have to say, hearing a 4600 roar is really an awesome sound!
Thanks for the new video! Your videos are very well done and packed with tons of good information. I often find myself going back to re-watch certain parts of each video. Best part is, I have the coolest things to talk about at the coffee machine each morning. Keep up the good work. As for the two people who gave you a thumbs down, well they probably came here thinking there were going to see Taylor Swift's new video.

Here's my request for a future video: A Cat 6060 in backhoe (excavator) configuration.
Kool. A/C too! Very nice machine.
I didn't know they made them for that long!
I'd love to hear one of those with a Detroit run...I wouldn't want to run it myself though haha! Great video as always!

I don't come across many 4600s with Detroit's in them. The one that I do know of with Detroit's is pretty noisy.
Thanks, Pal! This was a really good one. I never understood the Vicon concept till now. Nice to be able to just put it in auto and not ride brakes, in or out. I'm just in the wrong place to burn some fuel in one of these. I'm glad you're not! Thanks again!

Very interesting video. I operate a American 999 with 5 yard bucket and a Cat d353 repower. Would like to see a video of one if you ever get a chance
The 4600 down from me has a CAT 379 v8 and VICON controls also has drag interlock

Do you have the serial guide for this? Must be a rare piece
This video is great. I am searching for pics or video of the 4600 as a loading or hi front stripping shovel. If anyone has anything about it as a shovel please let me know. I can't build a model without seeing some more angles of the point, and boom butt areas
Just a comment I think you'd make a great voiceover actor appreciate videos man keep it up

A really fascinating set up with two engines. I guess if it were any bigger it would be diesel electric.

Look at all that room to work on it
Can you do a documentary video about the O&K rh400
I believe the Lima 2400 was equipped with a V-8 Cat D378 as standard. The optional D379 mentioned would have been a V-12. From what I heard and read, the 2400s were a little slower, but more reliable than the 4600s. These machines probably hit the limits in size, proportion, and properties of materials available for fiction operation to be feasible. When you see a machine equipped with lighting, you say "no thank you" unless it pays very well or you are in dire need of a job.
@PAmining
7 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I'd say the 2400 was more reliable but it was a heavier machine. And yes, a 4600 is a much faster machine than a 2400. This is primarily due to the VICON control system. The operator can control the engine throttle from the hoist and drag hand levers, thus making the machine go faster or slower. On a 2400, the engine runs at one speed.

2400's and 4600's have D379's. V12 version is a 397 and V16 version is a D398 IIRC
Did u ever run any of these machines if not u should great job

Wow what a sweet machine how much did that dragline cost originally
@PAmining
7 жыл бұрын
That's a good question and unfortunately I really don't have an answer. The sale price for a 4600 would have changed quite a bit over time just by how long this model was offered.

PAmining just wondering becouse i have a old link belt speeder dragline and it is fast
Quite an innovative machine for that time. But how is the reliability of such a complex setup?
@PAmining
7 жыл бұрын
Compared to a lot of modern machines, these old draglines are actually very reliable and simple to repair
@DFRDRIFTPIG

Old is better. Just keep rebuilding and repainting them.

You think this is big, you need to see a 6400!
unfortunatly there is no collector market like classic cars and with high scrap values they are desitined to be scraped
Is this one still in use?

The company I work for has a 4100 and the serial number is 001
Pretty old school having a machine to run off Diesel engines. Nowadays electric power is the normal way to go. Less maintenance down time, refuelling and noise.
My old favorite clamshell digging machine....until I got into a Liebherr 🤡
