Challenges for vehicles plying on the Ukhrul-Jessami Road in NH 202 in Manipur continue as repair works are still underway. On July 2, a large portion of the highway between Old Central Jail and New Langdang village, around 7 kilometres from Ukhrul town, sank following heavy rain. Despite intervention from the local MLA and temporary repairs by NHIDCL using stones and chips, continued rainfall caused the 300-foot stretch to sink again by 6-10 feet.
Although locals and youths are helping vehicles cross the damaged portion, it is being informed that over 100 vehicles including 20 goods-carrying trucks are still stranded on the highway. The road connecting Nagaland’s Phek district with Jessami village of Ukhrul works as a lifeline for the localities along the stretch. Locals have expressed concern over the road's condition, which has lacked proper repairs for years. The sinking has also damaged the water pipeline from Shirui Hills to Ukhrul town, disrupting water supply.
