Manipur: Kuki-Zo volunteer killed in gunfight laid to rest in Kangpokpi

Amidst the 12-hour total shutdown enforced by the Committee on Tribal Unity in Manipur's Kangpokpi district, hundreds of Kuki-Zo men and women, draped in mournful black, gathered to honour a "Kuki-Zo village volunteer" as they laid him to rest at the Martyrs' Cemetery in Phaijang village on April 28.
Father of five children, 45-year-old Lammang Kipgen was killed during a gunfight early on Sunday morning at Bethel village in the fringe of Leimakhong-Kangchup area.
The burial ceremony for Kipgen was conducted under the auspices of the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), which was attended by various Kuki-Zo leaders, civil society organisations, as well as the bereaved family and their loved ones.
Following the killing of the village volunteer, CoTU enforced a 12-hour total shutdown from Sunday noon till midnight across the district.
All business establishments downed their shutters during the total shutdown, while the typically bustling National Highway 2 wore a deserted look as vehicular movement came to a standstill. However, the movement of emergency services such as medical, those travelling to the airport and media were exempted from the shutdown.
On the sidelines of the burial ceremony, CoTU media cell coordinator Ng Lun Kipgen said that had the Central Security Forces not been withdrawn, Lammang would have been alive.
“We want to know why the central government is hell bent to withdraw all the central security forces from the fringe areas when there has been relentless attacks from the majoritarian community,. Had the central forces not been withdrawn from the area, we would have not been here. Who will be responsible for all these incidents? Power comes with responsibilities and accountability, without which it is a Banana republic," Kipgen said.

And its even election time so they wont risk jumping in on such controversial event.
