MANGALORE Food Tour | Part - 1/2 I Karnataka Food Tour I India Food Tour

Mangalore, officially known as Mangaluru, is the second major city in Karnataka in all aspects after Bangalore. Also known as the Gateway of Karnataka, it is one the most multicultural non-metro cities of India. It is also the largest city in the Coastal and Malnad regions of Karnataka.
We started our Mangalore food journey with Karishma, an engineer by profession and a food blogger by passion by visiting the Bunder.
The food journey started with the traditional breakfast of Bangalore at 96 years old New Taj Mahal Café. We tried some of the classic dishes like - Kottige, Rice Pundi, Sanjeera and Biscuit rotti.
The second stop Ayodhya hotel was the true highlight of Mangalore food tour. This no frills restaurant has the best local and authentic Mangalorian food. They serve seasonal and vegetarian food. We tried almost 20 odd dishes at the hotel.
About the host - Anubhav Sapra :
Anubhav Sapra is an avid foodie! He is a Founder but proudly calls himself a Foodie-in-chief at Delhi Food Walks. He is also a street-food and Indian regional cuisine connoisseur and loves to write about street-food.

I am a Punjabi and we are used to eating lot more heavy ( unhealthy) food , lot more meat though seeing simplicity of this food brought sort of tears in my eyes ( go figure ) . I love South India and simplicity of it's people . I thought managalore was sort of part of a bigger conglomerate called 'karnatka ' but seeing this food made me realized uniqueness of their food culture . I hope I do get an opportunity to visit India and managalore .

Mangaloreans are great hosts. Once you are in Mangalore, every one feels you are his or her own guest. Once you taste Mangalore food, you will be hooked on to it instantly and permanently. I must say, there is no place like Mangalore where you can find such wide variety. Karishma is a good guide. Turmeric leaf sweet is called Patholi. And the bittergourd like pakoda is called Phagila. This is very common in Kolkata. It grows in forest and is called wild bittergourd. Enjoy in Mangalore.

Yes, it is kantola (momordica dioica, करटोली, ककोड़ा). It is not grown in Mangaluru region but got from Odisha, West Bengal region. Actually Konkanis (mainly Goud Saraswat Brahmins, West Bengal was known as gouda desha earlier) introduced it to Mangaluru. Another West Bengal vegetable available in Mangaluru is pointed gourd (trichosanthes dioica, पर्वाल्/परवल्).

This is one thing which can change, and if a bit more of enthusiasm and expression when you taste the food would be appreciated. You are enjoying the cuisines from all the places you travel for the benefit of the viewers, so make an effort to make the experience of the viewers more exciting and fun to watch. In Mangalore, different languages co-exist and accordingly, the preparation also changes. Hence, different names are there for the same food. Whenever you visit a restaurant, you should know which language/community people it belongs to and you have to be accompanied/guided with/by such person who knows it well. Then, your experience and cherishing of the food you eat will enhance.

those dishes are very different that your "typical" indian food, but in America there are no restaurants that serve strictly such food bc where we gonna get the leaves from. Ghatt is also bengali dish made inside bamboo stick. I love your presentation of the food, plz visit calcatta and darjiling and shilong and Assam.

Have literally lived in M'lore for close to 20 years. Used to stay at Taj Manjarun hotel. Have taken food at Mohini Vilas and Woodlands. Used to roam in the Hampankatta area very frequently. Little did I know of such unique eateries and their exquisite offerings. Of course, hotel Srinivasa Cafe was a place where I used to relish some delicacies. Obviously, I missed some rare fares at M'lore. Like, the Golu Bajji, Buns and the stuffed roti. Wish I visit M'lore once more, only to savour these exquisite delicacies.

I loved Mangalore and Bangalore. Talking about the former... it seemed to be a really old city ...with some tall buildings having Banks at every corner. It almost felt like wall street . I enjoyed my stay at a Good hotel in Bunder. For a brief stay of 2 days I can say that their food might not be the most delicious one... but undeniably the most healthy one. And I loved the Achal Cashews.

KALTAPPA is also prepared in homes on festivities (I donot know what it is calles in Odia). Especially in villages, the older generation they make it (My grandmother used to make it)and now it is being lost in city lifestyle. You can also find similarity between some Kannada and Odia words.

@@daredevil4780 Yes of course.. After ASHOKA won the Kalinga war around 270 B.C. and disgusted with war and took to Buddhism and sent his son to sinhala (or Srilanka) from Kalinga to propagate the teachings of Lord Buddha, So of course some form of cultural and food infusion must have happened during the brief period.
