I need to make sure to use these manga effects.I need to keep the gloom rising lines alive when using it nessarily. No one wants it to become a discredited trope now, would we?
Great video man! Thanks for this! I have a question tho, did you study art college/take vocational courses or are you self taught?
@MonitorComics
3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply! Thank you for the comment! As much as I want to say I am self-taught, I really can't. I've been drawing ever since I was a kid and my parents got me into a mentally gifted (mg program) curriculum for art in elementary school. So I learned a lot of the basics really early on and had art teachers to walk me through the fundamentals. In middle school, I mostly just taught myself from youtube videos and things like that, but I still took middle school art classes here and there because I wanted to learn more. In High school, I got accepted into a performing arts academy where I studied Fine Art, Photography, and Graphic Design. That definitely helped me improve the most when it comes to art theory. I'm currently in university right now pursuing a dual degree in Fine Arts and Graphic Design. As fancy as that all sounds, I don't believe art school or classes are necessary for anyone. I feel like most of what I've learned, especially when it comes to comics and my anime style, were things I figured out on my own. Art classes are only good for teaching theory and fundamentals (anatomy, lighting, perspective, scale, composition, color selection, etc.) Most of these skills can be learned for free on youtube. I think art school and classes can be good because you have teachers who can give you good feedback and help you improve quicker. Learning with others is also a good motivator to force yourself to put the hours into practice. While I don't recommend art school or classes if you don't have the opportunity, it's definitely been helpful for me at least. Sorry for the long response lol, hope that helped. I've seen so many amazing artists younger than me who are self-taught, so it's definitely possible to do it without formal art education.

@@MonitorComics @Monitor Comics to be honest, that gives me a surge of motivation! It's great to hear what learning art is like from another perspective. Unlike you, i really don't have a lot of opportunities to study in art school since I'm only living in a small town. I kinda regret not learning art early on. When i was 8, I already understood perspective but I didn't realize it until i was this old🤣. I really hope it isn't too late for me. Anyways, I'll keep on tuning in to your channel because this is such a gold mine for all of us developing artists out here especially those who don't have a mentor. Thanks for this! And good luck to your future projects!

@@labomemnumbazerozeroyon7085 Glad my story could help! It's never too late, art is all muscle memory, the more you work it, the better you'll get! Just keep practicing, challenging yourself, and learning from others! Thanks again for the nice comment, best of luck to you too!
This was helpfully🤍✨
Gloom lines and Rising lines... Nobody talks about anything like that with Western comics. I've seen it done in manga, but I just thought it was some abstract effect to keep from having to draw a background similar to that thing the Image guys used to do (You know, big, abstract-shaped blobs of black with checkerboard crosshatch coming out)--- I didn't realize it served a storytelling purpose as well. I'll be incorporating that during dramatic story moments now. Exactly the sort of thing I'm here for!
@MonitorComics
Жыл бұрын
That's awesome to hear! Both the gloom lines and rising line effects fall into the broader, "Speed Line" category. There are many different types of speed lines that are used to convey different things. For example diagonal speedlines are often used in scenes of fast movement, like characters running or flying. Like the Image comic effects you mentioned, there are some common "abstract effects" manga artists use when they don't feel like drawing backgrounds. Often times manga artists will just fill the entire background black for dramatic moments or leave it completely white for upbeat or casual scenes There are also many other hatching and stippling effects used to allude to things like embarrassment, anxiety, etc. Most of these effects can also be done with screen tone
1:58 hey, didn't know about that one(effect #3,) it'll definetly be usefull at my manga. The more you know!

I'm not a comic artist or anything like that but my hobby is making short animations and short stories so this really helps with effects which is something I'm not very good at. I've been told that there are plugins you could buy if you use Photoshop! Otherwise, you might have to poke around google images or some forum posts for PNG files. If you work traditionally, I know the brand Deleter sells different effects as screentone! Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for this amazing information, just one question, I have searched a lot but a lot about the specific crosshatching pattern that appears in the min 3:21, did you know how is it name? I want to used in my Mangas too, but thanks for all this information :>

Sorry, but I actually do not know the specific name. To me, it just looks like a grid inside of a square. To make it, I'd probably focus on one square first broken up into 7 by 7 and the copy and past that entire thing over and over again, creating that layering effect Hope that helps!

I try to find a balance between general "basic" concepts and more advanced "niche" topics. A majority of my audience are beginners, so while this stuff may seem obvious to some, some people still need it I don't try to beat a dead horse though. If it only needs one five minute video then I'll do that. If it needs 4 15 minute videos then I do that too
