Honestly, the Dominicans who have that mindset are usually old af. Older Dominicans were forced to believe that Black was bad when Trujillo was in power. During his time as dictator, people who looked black were assumed to be Haitian and killed by Dominican soldiers unless you could prove you were Dominican by pronouncing the word "perejil" (parsley, in english) which Haitians can't pronounce because of their accent (they would pronounce it as 'pelejil'). Basically, older Dominicans have that enclosed mindset that they have to prove that they are not Black/Haitian because Trujillo brainwashed the country. It's an outdated mindset and it is rare these days to find Dominicans who don't acknowledge their blackness. It is actually celebrated now, here in the states, as well as the motherland. (sorry to get all historical, I'm Dominican, and I also recently wrote a paper on racism in DR, and this info is still fresh in my mind lol)

Plantains are super tasty. If you want more savory/salty ones, just make sure to buy them and cook them when there really green, If they're more yellow when you cook them, they will taste sweeter. I don't mind them either way but my boyfriend (whose Puerto Rican) hates the sweeter plantains but loves the other ones fried with salt and sometimes minced garlic on them. And, I don't know if this makes me super weird or not, I just love cooking/working with them. Their fun to peel and cut and cook once you get used to them.

I took a trip to the DR last year and it is one of the most beautiful countries I have ever visited. As a Salvadorean, I understand the differences within the Latin cultures and this is was no exception. I went as part of a service learning project with a group of high school students and the people of the DR were the most hospitable. We got to know the real DR, the real people, the real food. This video reminds me so much of what we ate for the week. Thanks for sharing!!!!!

Made me smile so big! From another AfroDominican thanks for being so proud and acknowledging the African roots of this dish! So tired of the whitewashed story about mangu and american soldiers.
