    @@AshwinRamdinPlease tell me how I can work instead of claiming benefits. After 25 years of working as a teacher, (paying all my contributions,) I became severely disabled because of a brain injury. Doctors say if I work it could affect me very badly, but also I can't work because I can't learn anything new, (anterograde amnesia,) have extremely limited mobility and get severe sensory overload if I am anywhere where there is background noise. Loud noises cause hyperacusis, (pain in the head.) I also can't concentrate on anything for more than fifteen minutes at a time. Every morning when I wake I am extremely disorientated for around two hours. What would you advise? I loved my job and I still miss it after 8 years of being disabled. I am sure there are people who could work but don't, but many people actually cannot work. I hope you never find yourself in such a position. I never wanted to go on benefits - I had a well paid job that I spent years qualifying for.

    I’m looking after a ladder for a builder. They were doing some work on the houses on my street. Asked if he could leave it in my garden untill tomorrow. Said yeah no problem. That was about a year and a half ago at least 😂😂 did start to wonder if it had been a joke on the apprentice, hiding his ladders. Either way, I have ladders.

    This is exactly why I take it with a grain of salt when people talk about "benefit scroungers". Doing something like occasional paid babysitting can be enough to have someone legally branded as a someone who "doesn't need the benefits" coz "look, they're working!". Only 2.7% of people on benefits are considered not to need them, but even out of that 2.7% it wouldn't surprise me if many of them were in a similar situation to mandy here (Edited as it previously said "2%", but the statistic on fraudulent benefits claimants is 2.7%, so rounding down to 2 is a little inaccurate)

  • @nakkadu

    Where do you get the 2 percent figure from?

  • @dolphinloser6546

    @dolphinloser6546

    @@nakkadu the DWP Report: "Fraud and Error in the Benefit System for the Financial Year ending 2023" reported that Overpayments Due To Fraud in 2022/2023 accounted for 2.7% of benefit expenditure. I actually made a minor mistake in my comment - I got mixed up between the statistic for total fraud percent calculated (2.7% as mentioned above) and the statistic for fraud percent related to false reporting of self-employed income (2.3%). So rounding up from 2.7, the actual sentence should be "Only about 3% of people on benefits are considered not to need them". Not that these two numbers are very different, but still, 3% is slightly more accurate

  • @nakkadu

    @nakkadu

    @@dolphinloser6546 Ok so that's people who have been found to be fraudulent. You said people who "don't need the benefits" which is different. I personally witness people on benefits who are perfectly capable of working, I also know of many people who use the benefits system and who have plenty of disposable income; I believe these are the people referred to as "scroungers" rather than the actual criminals who defraud the system.
