In this Mandela vs. De Klerk clip, Mandela’s vocal variety, pauses, body language, gestures, facial expressions are vastly superior. De Klerk’s reading & speaking at the same time does not help him at all. I judge Mandela to have clearly won this debate-despite the very valid point that de Klerk raised.

1:53 to 2:05 - Mr Mandela's words gave me chills... This critique can be applied to the ANC today. Just replace minority with majority. ANC lost the high ground decades ago.

Thanks Franco Van Staden. I've thought this too. And had similar thoughts about the Congress party in India. The parallels are clear. Separated by about 40 years. A liberation party sadly becomes a legacy party, where _how to stay in power?_ becomes a central concern. It is a challenge that representative democracies must confront and resolve. I feel the ideas from Dacher Keltner's book, *The Power Paradox: How We Gain and Lose Influence* is a good way forward.

@@RashidKapadia Indeed sir, as a white South African, I feel that the ANC without Mr Mandela lost its vision. We're now in this dystopia where no one knows what's going to happen. History tells us of empires falling because its powerful leader(s) fell away. The National Party clung to power knowing it can't hold back the tide of change, they readied their weapons, while Mandela would not let a bloodbath be South Africa's fate. He saved thousands (if not millions) of lives from the NP's warmachine. Thank you for your insightful comment.
