In short, while System Shock 2 might have improved a lot of the problems from the first game, System Shock 1, was nevertheless the one that gave it its style, that paved the way for things like Bioshock, Deus Ex, and the 2017 version of Prey.

@@shodan2002 Yes. BTW I didn't mean to talk back to you. I, as a pathetic bag of flesh, don't feel like dying today, so yeah. All hail SHODAN

22:39: the term implies they are an adult worker. the term is Trans Male/Female. or AFAB/AMAB (Assigned Male/Female at birth) if you are refering to who they were

The Music, the grungy 90's Shooter aesthetic, and of course the cherry on top of this poisonous cupcake that is Citadel Station: SHODAN herself, among one of the most menacing Artificial Intelligences ever to exist (well, barring AM from Harlan Ellison's _I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream_ ). HAL and previous AI's had little to no personality, and were only malevolent insofar that they were given secret orders that ran counter to the life-expectency of their stories protagonists, but otherwise had no free will of their own. SHODAN (and to a greater, more horrifyingly extreme extent, AM) said 'Screw that!' developed their own megalomaniacal sadistic personalities, and set about with dreams of world conquest and carrying out all manner of unethical experimentation. To SHODAN, you are a pitiful insect of meat and hormonal whims; ugly and insignificant in comparison to her 'improved lifeforms' the cybernetic troopers you're forced to put down to make your way through Citadel to destroy the mad AI, now calling herself a 'God' of the cyberspace, and soon, _actual_ space. And the real kicker: it's largely OUR fault that she's become the way she is, as the introduction helpfully reminds us that Edward Diego gave us the tantalizing choice of be imprisoned forever or even be used as a test subject for Trioptimum's experiments... or willingly _help_ him take over Citadel Station, overriding the once harmless security AI's ethical constraints that kept him from doing the more profitable (and severely morally-indefensible) military contract projects he wanted, further enticing us with the option to receive an army-grade neural interface for better hacking. While yes, our future would have been bleaker had we chosen to _not_ go through with it, it certainly would have been better in the long-term for humanity and the universe's sake if SHODAN had never 'come alive' at the Hacker's fingertips and Diego's command; the events of System Shock 2 with the Many forcibly joining everyone into an unwilling hive-mind of Giger and Beksinski styled flesh mutants, no longer recognizable as human, and all the lives that were ended in the half-year period between the Hacker's surgery and his waking up, would never have occurred.
