Vini can strive in the system because he has a good relationship with Ancelotti and Ancelotti gives him the freedom to continue his creative style of play. Leao is one of the most creative players in the world for Milan, but for Portugal, in some cases you can actually see he's trying to play his usual creativity but pulls back, almost remembering his instructions. That's my main theory. To be honest it doesnt seem like anyone likes the Portugal manager, both the players on the team and Portugal supporters. Overall the chemistry and relationships for Portugal is horrid. Seriously. Like one moment Bernardo Silva and Bruno hate eachother and the next match they're both the best buddies in the world. Makes no sense lol

Although I do not watch full matches, the highlights that I see of Portugal and Milan clearly show that Leao is stifled, restricted, affected by not being able to express himself with higher profile teammates in Portugal. It seems like he sometimes chooses not to drift into the middle of the ground, because those areas are occupied by older experienced players or maybe as you said he has instructions to just follow a certain tactic. I like the comparison you made to Vinicius where Ancelotti gave him the confidence and backing to express himself. Vinicius even went to the right side recently and scored, which I think he is perfectly capable of in my opinion. Some RM fans recently were telling me Vini cannot play from right side.
