Top quality first half display, then inexplicably lose…
Doc's boys exemplified in that first 45, however (and even in moments in the second).
Motson was right at 20:14, the other 60,000 crowd that season was the 60,612 that saw us beat Leeds 1-0 on 12-3-77, which can be seen here: • Leeds United: The Wild... .

I remember i was at junior school back then and was in the park playing football with my mates and someone bought a radio with them to listen to the football scores. He then yells out to me 'hey Chris spurs are losing 2-0, ha ha ha.' When i got home i feared the worst and went mad when my dad told me Spurs won 3-2. I then managed to persuade him to let me watch MOTD if i washed his car in the morning. Watching this again brought back memories i had forgotten about but God knows how we won. Thanks for posting.

My first ever game at Old Trafford to watch my beloved UTD.Not the best of starts but didn’t put me off and have seen UTD play well over a 1000 games now both home and away and all over Europe. Some magical moments and memories but for me the Tommy Doc era was the best for atmosphere and pure attacking football closely followed by Fergie time.

I'd completely forgotten this game, still hard to believe Spurs came from two down, they really should have had to come from about nine down. Docherty was building something quite special at MU, maybe they could have challenged Liverpool, such a shame how it all ended for him. The Doc never got the credit he deserved, probably because of how it all ended, He inherited a pile of crap and rebuilt the team without spending piles of money and mainly recruiting players from lower leagues. Within 18 months they were playing great football and challenging for everything. Sexton and his 'sophisticated', cerebral approach, strangled the life out of the team. I suppose United wanted a safe pair of hands- literally- but they were never the same after he took over.

Spurs travelled to the midlands but not up North and no Midland or Northern club travelled London- simply because they wld get their heads kicked in. Only ManU travelled in numbers those days and wld get severe beatings in London.....Later on this season Spurs organised into an away firm and travelled everywhere up North @@rstevens7711

A season that started so well then it went tits up by losing 8-2 to Derby and it didn't get much better. I saw them once or twice and they were bloody awful. The worst side Tottenham ever produced in my lifetime.

You went down with one of the highest win rates for a team in last place: almost one third of the total fixtures. It was a fairly even First Division that year, so you may have been a bit unlucky.

@@scherben8870 I wasn't aware of that statistic but I can say I saw them play five times that season and for want of better wording, we were awful and in all fairness, relegation served us well: we were promoted the following season with a new impetus and within three years were a team to be reckoned with.

The worst Spurs team was 1993-94. It holds the club record of seven consecutive league defeats. And won even fewer matches and achieved the same number of points (going on three points for a win) over a 42 game season, than the 1976-77 team. It finished 15th out of 22, that season. Yet didn’t ensure safety until their penultimate game. And at least the 1976-77 team had a young promising Glenn Hoddle.

Where are the spurs fans? And yes I know this was 1976. Did they not travel north then.? No segregation at old Trafford.

  • @Northerner1966

From what i remember back then, and i was pretty young, many grounds didn't have segregation til about 77 or 78, so many away fans were wary of going to some grounds without segregation.. United always travelled as they had strength in numbers, of the London fans,Chelsea travelled well, but most other London fans rarely came up north. Tottenham and Arsenal rarely came north in number til the late 70s. I can remember Arsenal bringing just 17 fans on the open embankment terrace to Bolton in 78/79. Was an evening game, Bolton won 4-2, but 17 was abysmal. They did bring over 3K the following season though.
